The aquariumdrunkard list is massive and has some amazing records in there which I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere.

That RA list is very dull.

I don't think anyone's posted the American Songwriter list yet:

xp I bet a playlist of all the dozens of bands named Troll over the years would be pretty fun!

― Fastnbulbous

i once made a mixtape of metal bands named legion. it was pretty rad.

it doesn't seem to differentiate new releases and archival releases? okay yeah yoko's _plastic ono band_ is a great record, but filing it next to frank ocean seems a bit strange.

Aquariumdrunkard lists are always like that. Lots of reissues and archival.

Moka, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

RA list just confirms that i'm really not missing anything by skipping out on that site

Did we post the Wire list yet? 1-10 is Bowie/Shirley/Moor Mother/Autechre/NIck Cave/Jenny Hval/Noura/Yves Tumor/Gaika/Mark Ernestus.

Nobody posted the Radio X list then? Well, fair enough. But just so we get a sense of balance, here we go.

It's not quite as bad as last year, but still...

RA list is kinda depressing, it's weird too because I've found loads of great music on their site this year and was of the impression that they had started to come into their own a bit.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 06:38 (seven years ago) link

Just read the Pitchfork and SPIN lists, and it's amazing how similar they are to each other. Not just the same #1, but every single album in P4k's top 20 is in SPIN's top 30, just shuffled around. But there's one major difference: SPIN put the 1975 at #5, and it's nowhere in the P4k top 50.

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 07:00 (seven years ago) link

I refuse to believe so many people actually like the Life of Pablo or rate is anything more than an obvious bodge job.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 08:07 (seven years ago) link

I refuse to believe so many people actually like [art I dislike] = nagl

niels, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 08:15 (seven years ago) link

I can understand liking it or finding its flaws sort of interesting but when Kanye's worst album by far is appearing as the top rap album of 2016 in multiple lists it suggests there's something else happening here.

Always good to see a list from another universe. Hedvig Mollestad Trio sounds cool!

wanderly braggin' (seandalai), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 11:28 (seven years ago) link

Hedvig Mollestad's Nordic labelmates Bushman's Revenge are good as well.

calzino, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 11:39 (seven years ago) link

excellent list is that

calzino, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 11:41 (seven years ago) link

I think Matt DC is saying that Russian hackers are responsible for Kanye'a strong performance.

Tim F, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 11:57 (seven years ago) link

heh? next you'll be saying Bradley Wiggins is a drugs cheat :p

calzino, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 12:05 (seven years ago) link

Really bold of Textura to put Kanye at #1 this year

Evan, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 13:27 (seven years ago) link

seems this is the year everyone got off the Wild Beasts bus. album was jaw droppingly bad IMO.

piscesx, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link

liked the single a lot but yeah the album just went in one ear out the other

nashwan, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link

I really like about half of it tbh, "2BU" and the bonus track "Maze" are beauts

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 13 December 2016 14:22 (seven years ago) link

I've been so torn on that Tignor album that's topping the Texture list all year. Its really beautiful but seems almost too easy. Like that, the Eluvium and the Ben Lukas Boyson are all so gorgeous but so effortless that it seems... suspicious? I like them all on a purely visceral level, but every time I sit down with them, it feels almost tropey

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

"I can understand liking it or finding its flaws sort of interesting but when Kanye's worst album by far is appearing as the top rap album of 2016 in multiple lists it suggests there's something else happening here."

Pitchfork put it at number 5 iirc. I'm starting to think Kanye owns 50% of Pitchfork or something, they keep giving him 10.0 or 9.5 ratings no matter how bad his records get.

jon123, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link

I listened to the Ben Lukas Boyson record at the weekend and it sounded gorgeous but in a very predictable way, like it was his pitch for soundtracking a Scandinavian murder mystery series set in a photogenic small town where everyone has a dark secret from 20 years ago.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link

12. Dele Sosimi & Afrobeat Orchestra - Too Much Information (Laolu Remix)

FWIW this is brilliant.

SPIN put the 1975 at #5, and it's nowhere in the P4k top 50.

Well, at least that's one thing that Pitchfork got right.
