I was visiting a friend last night, and another friend of his came over, scratched the host's pup on the head and got a snap for his troubles. A chihuahua/beagle size snap, but still - the friend in question had dogsat the little bugger a few times before, so it's not like he's a total stranger.

Badly behaved dogs are badly behaved!!

Followup: girlfriend came back negative for dog allergy and is off steroids and seems to be okay except for recurring swelling on hand.
We think we're okay. Banjo is now a very needy member of the family.

TEN!

I have been promised photos, and now so have you.

That is EPIC! Are you going to take one home with you and buy it a little bandana and play frisbee with it and then roast marshmallows around a campfire while he eats a marrow bone?

Abbott, Friday, 17 August 2007 21:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd love to, but both of my housemates already have a dog each, so I'm going to have to get a place of my own before I can seriously entertain such thoughts.

Banjo seems to be enjoying her newfound freedom and security. I love the lolling-on-the-back thing that all the bulldogs and boxers of my acquaintance do.

There's something impressive and endearing about a momma pet nursing a pile of wiggling blindie hunger cute; they always have such a look of drained resignation on their faces.

Abbott, Saturday, 18 August 2007 20:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Zero does that same thing (likes it especially if there's a ball or a bone to roll on) then gets up and does a full body shake. Banjo, we love you!

If you can promise me no pointy polka-dot party hats, I'll see what I can do.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 19 August 2007 01:32 (sixteen years ago) link

But there's hardly anything better for a birthday than putting a party hat on your pet!

Abbott, Sunday, 19 August 2007 01:37 (sixteen years ago) link

My parents' beagle does the back roll and shake as well - and as pictures can attest, he looks kind of bull-y at times. Weird little/fat thing.

supa KAWAI birthday pit.

I'm feeling exceedingly shitty in that I was spinning banjo when she jumped at me and she landed wrong and yelped (she NEVER yelps) and hurt one of her rear legs real bad. She's running funny and limping and I wanna jump off a cliff. She is getting lots of guilt oriented cuddling, treats and special attention.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 19 August 2007 06:24 (sixteen years ago) link

It's okay, she won't hold it against you.

I defend pits right to exist and be lovely, lovely pets, but personally I find their slitted eyes slightly too evil and repellent, particularly when that part of the face is white and the eyes are all albino-y and red-rimmed. :( Their eyes scare me more than their daaaaaangerous reputation.

Laurel, Thursday, 23 August 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

what about labs & bassets? Labs can have the same slitted eye look, and bassets can have the red albino eye thing?

http://www.poochiepoochie.com/blog/doggedpeace.jpg

kingfish, Thursday, 23 August 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Nah, it's a head-shape thing: labs eyes are rounder and not set as far back to the sides. And the red eyes I just dislike across the board, but they occurred to me re pits b/c I met one a few weeks ago with that characteristic -- she was awesome and seemed like a great dog but she came charging at me done the hallway at some point and her eyes made me think of a creature out of hell. Oh well! No matter.

I was at one of my favorite pubs Saturday night (The Draught House, formerly The Draught Horse) where dogs are welcome to frolic in the parking lot, which is where most of the drinking happens anyway since there are picnic tables and not much room inside plus the indoor smoking ban and ANYWAY.

Yes, there are always several dogs enjoying a night out with their owners there, and pits are often seen as well. Last night, though, there was a sweet happy friendly pit INSIDE the bar. Standing in line for beer, and flirting with the customers by 'standing' on them and begging for pats, scratches, cheddar goldfish, pints of beer and basically anything she could get.

Any ilxor dog lovers who make it to Austin are cordially invited to FAP there, natch.

AMARILLO -- A miniature horse given to a boy with brain cancer by the Make-A-Wish Foundation was killed by a pair of pit bulls who were found roaming in his yard, authorities said.
The 31-inch tall horse, Anniversary, was donated by the foundation to 3-year-old Christian Vasquez in late August.
Christian, who was diagnosed in January with a malignant form of brain cancer, received a pull cart, a blanket, a halter and a bridle set from the foundation on Saturday, said Jelaine Workman, executive director for the foundation's Amarillo chapter.

Two days later, Anniversary was found dead on his property in Pampa by Christian's father, Raul Vasquez.
The father was nearly attacked by the dogs but managed to climb a tree and call 911 on his cell phone.
One of the dogs was captured by authorities and remains in custody at the Pampa animal pound, while the other escaped and remained on the loose, Gray County Sheriff Don Copeland said.
"I was scared to death," said Raul Vasquez, 41. "They killed Anniversary, and I thought they would kill me too."

It was unclear how the dogs entered the property, which is surrounded by a 4 1/2-foot-high fence.
Workman said the foundation won't be able to supply a second horse but was getting calls from residents who wanted to donate money for a new one.
Anniversary cost $1,300, and the foundation included free feed, training and veterinary care for a year in its gift.
"This horse was beautiful," Workman said. "It just makes me angry that people allow their dogs to run on the loose."
