Collapsing at Your Doorstep

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 11 December 2016 05:04 (seven years ago) link

Going with June Evenings but I love this so much I paid Discogs prices for the 2x10" repress. I probably played June Evenings more than anything else this year. Here's a playlist built around that EP: https://open.spotify.com/user/brotherlovesdub/playlist/0DNCjlKIiAts9YGyFJmVMA

very difficult to choose between June Evenings, Collapsing at Your Doorstep and No Excuses but went with No Excuses, so great

collapsing at your doorstep is a GOAT track

I got that 2x10" for free in 2009 for volunteering some help at insound.com at the time :)

Evan, Sunday, 11 December 2016 06:34 (seven years ago) link

good Spotify playlist

this is difficult but I think I'm gonna go for the title track. The way the chorus part feels like a retreat is the secret charm of this EP - it manages to make all these joyful sounds and euphoric moments still feel intimate and private.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 11 December 2016 10:00 (seven years ago) link

"No Excuses" for me.

Bought this on a hunch in Pet Sounds in Stockholm on holiday in 2008. Wasn't let down.

I once mistakenly referred to one of these songs as "Collapsing at your Desktop" and to be honest I was very OTM that day.

Tim F, Sunday, 11 December 2016 11:29 (seven years ago) link

That remains true even if I end up voting for "No Excuses"

Tim F, Sunday, 11 December 2016 11:30 (seven years ago) link

Voted June Evenings but it really could have been any of tracks 2-5.

This reminded me to go back to Boat Club's Caught the Breeze from 2007 - another of my all-time favorites for this type of Scandinavian-Balearic vibes. Maybe the only thing they've done? Couldn't find them ever mentioned on ILM

ƒ©˙∆˚¬ (Whitey on the Moon), Sunday, 11 December 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

i love that boat club ep too! ilm is the only place i've ever seen them mentioned tho it is not the easiest name to search for

voted for maundy thursday, windmill wedding is by some distance the least great song here

On Trade Winds holds up quite well too, if you're introducing yourself to these guys for the first time you might as well listen to everything.

Evan, Sunday, 11 December 2016 18:45 (seven years ago) link

also the stand alone single GBG Belongs To Us, and their remixes for Friendly Fires and Taken By Trees. Their whole career fits on to one CD-R.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 11 December 2016 18:49 (seven years ago) link

This always puts me in a great mood:

I just re-read the original thread and had to laugh at lex arriving to say he didn't like Air France, Kevin encouraging Lex to persevere and cutty telling Kevin to fuck off.

might be my all-time favorite EP. could make a case for anything on here, but i went with the title song.

while we're talking AF in general: early loosie "hold on to me baby" is one of their best. discovering it years after the fact felt like finding a hidden track on no way down. here's a bad youtube rip of an 192kbps mp3, replete with a couple mins of dead air at the end:

think a couple of others have mentioned but on trade winds still BANGS

i never flipped for anything on this or any other tracks as much as 'meet me by the pier'

k3vin k., Wednesday, 14 December 2016 04:18 (seven years ago) link

extending my cameo as this is one of my absolute favorite groups and i miss them so much: is anyone here even sure "meet me by the pier" is actually AF? i tried to investigate a few years back, and could only find it posted on a couple extremely minor blogspots in 2010 (at the same time as another improbable obscurity, "please don't die on my doorstep" – AF were frequently self-referential but never so tastelessly). seems impossible to me that these songs would've come out at any point post-trade winds (december 2006) because in the peak bloghouse days these tracks would've left behind a much bigger fossil record.

i did find one search result that claims "pier" is an '06 sincerely yours 7", but considering 1) it's listed as being sourced from 192kbps, 2) the website listing it is long gone/cached, 3) sincerely yours doesn't list any such release in their catalogue or even have a spare # for it, that's probably bunk. ii'm p convinced these songs are pale imitations – absolutely their weakest work if it's somehow actually theirs.

btw, researching this stuff i discovered that air france released their very own white wine companion to on trade winds, which was only sold at a small gig that had something to do with PM dawn. if anyone has one of these corked, name your price...

Thanks for looking into that soyrev, I was also having trouble wrapping my brain around the lack of background for that track.

cannot stop listening to "beach party" and "never content" from their first EP

k3vin k., Saturday, 17 December 2016 17:44 (seven years ago) link

Same!

Evan, Saturday, 17 December 2016 17:50 (seven years ago) link

i actually think "never content" might be > "beach party"

GBG Belongs to Us is amazing too, probably my favourite of theirs other than tracks 3-4 here

verdict: i just put "collapsing outside your doorstep" on a mix for my crush

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Friday, 14 December 2018 18:25 (five years ago) link

Air France is my favorite! That and Studio have been in constant rotation for 10 years solid

Evan, Friday, 14 December 2018 18:38 (five years ago) link

last year I made some music that was very "inspired" (ie derivative) of this EP and some people heard it and it's allowed me to do some pretty interesting things like a soundtrack for a video for a charity and produce the music played into a live art exhibition, so not only do I get to thank them for making the best EP of all time but also for inspiring me to get to a position with a casual hobby I never thought possible, thank you Air France

A new interview with Henrik & Joel!

boxedjoy, Thursday, 10 January 2019 09:28 (five years ago) link

Thanks for that!

Agonizing that the interviewer doesn't touch upon any of their current plans/music making though, apart from this:

While long removed from putting out music — at least under the Air France moniker — both Karlsson and Markstedt took the time to speak about love, memory and creativity.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 January 2019 09:39 (five years ago) link

Yeah it feels like either a missed opportunity or they simply don't have any substantial plans

boxedjoy, Thursday, 10 January 2019 09:43 (five years ago) link

Surely the writer knows that everyone reading it will want to know, so at least address that they don't have substantial plans if indeed they don't imo

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 10 January 2019 09:44 (five years ago) link

congrats to boxedjoy on the success of your productions!

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Thursday, 10 January 2019 09:52 (five years ago) link

thank you NickB!

I think the circumstances by which they retired the project mean that the fans dont have any unrealistic hopes of them making a follow-up. But the tease of "at least under the Air France moniker" is tantalizingly unfair

boxedjoy, Thursday, 10 January 2019 09:56 (five years ago) link

Also I hate that word "moniker"
