that Jose Mauro reissue that led off their list was fantastic

I am super happy that Jenny Besetzt ended up at #6 on the Bandcamp list.

oh thanks for pointing that out, reminded me that i needed to buy it still

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

xpost. Somewhat ironically, now that Wilco are actually sort of good (last two albums) they're vanishing from the charts. Serves them right I guess.

dlp9001, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

Pitchfork's 20 Best Experimental Albums. I'm working through these. Matmos is really good and Yves Tumor is enjoyable so far.

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

Oh, people are hating on it on the Pitchfork thread.

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:47 (seven years ago) link

serpentwithfeet is pretty badass but it's not really what I would bring to mind when thinking of "experimental music"

¶ (DJP), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:48 (seven years ago) link

Anna Meredith album is great as well but there's nothing experimental about it at all.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:51 (seven years ago) link

Not at all??

Evan, Friday, 9 December 2016 17:53 (seven years ago) link

Ha, yeah, I don't know if I'd really describe the things I've listened to as "experimental" per se but these lists usually include music I enjoy. xp

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Friday, 9 December 2016 17:58 (seven years ago) link

Requirement number one to be an 'experimental art' artist: your album cover must be black & white.

http://www.stereogum.com/1914711/the-10-best-jazz-albums-of-2016/franchises/2016-in-review/

Stereogum's never run a jazz list before. I'm glad they asked me for one.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 9 December 2016 20:36 (seven years ago) link

#7 Noname is also great/notable!

(so, the whole Bandcamp Top 8 then)

xxp

Jeff W, Friday, 9 December 2016 20:37 (seven years ago) link

Ok I always roll my eyes at the whole 'easier to admire than to listen to' but that's pretty much where I'm at with Moor Mother

(though "KGBK" just came on, and that's sounding pretty cool)

sushi and the banh mis (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 9 December 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

Ya I like Noname, just didn't call it out cuz it's been in a handful of other lists.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 9 December 2016 21:07 (seven years ago) link

Stereogum's never run a jazz list before. I'm glad they asked me for one.

Nice. I've been enjoying Michael Formanek’s Ensemble Kolossus – The Distance. Also, the Pi label is putting out great stuff, like the Steve Lehman (Sélébéyone from the Bandcamp list), Henry Threadgill's Ensemble Double Up and Jonathan Finlayson & Sicilian Defense. Also props to Pi for the coolest integration of their site with Bandcamp:

My mention of Pi was in response to this entry on Phil's list: https://tyshawn-sorey.bandcamp.com/album/the-inner-spectrum-of-variables?

Does anyone know of any good contemporary 'classical'/compositional/'new music'/notated music lists?

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Friday, 9 December 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

that bandcamp list may be the one with the most overlap with my best of the year. i'm also really enjoying the terrace martin right now.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Friday, 9 December 2016 22:17 (seven years ago) link

The Textura list is always a good one for the experimental side of 'modern classical'/jazz/ambient.

Here's Cosmo (Eliza Thompson): http://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/music/a8480730/best-albums-of-2016/

Nice list but not quite the breath of fresh air it was in 2014 and 2015.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/07/arts/music/best-songs.html?action=click&contentCollection=Music&module=RelatedCoverage®ion=EndOfArticle&pgtype=article

Jon Pareles has at his #9 slot: 9. iLe “Caníbal” (Sony Music Latin) Ileana Cabra, who has sung with Calle 13, goes dramatically retro, complete with string section, to equate unrequited love and cannibalism.

Jon Caramanica has : 6. Ayo Jay “Your Number” (One Nation/RCA) This Nigerian-raised singer had the song of the summer that wasn’t.

Nate Chinen #9. Miranda Lambert “Vice” (Vanner/RCA Nashville) Ms. Lambert girds this rueful anthem with steely fatalism, rooted in the belief that every mistake is yours to own, however many times.

Caramanica's continued refusal to acknowledge that Solange's album exists is... understandable, but a bit weird.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 11 December 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

what makes you say that? i must've missed something.

alpine static, Sunday, 11 December 2016 22:50 (seven years ago) link

Caramanica shaded Solange in an NYT podcast and Solange tweeted at length about how hurt and offended she was by his comments. "Don't You Wait" is inspired in part by the comment he made iirc

art baengels (monotony), Monday, 12 December 2016 00:32 (seven years ago) link

I haven't heard the Solange album and likely never will, but Caramanica is an idiot with shitty taste.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 12 December 2016 06:00 (seven years ago) link

Well, she has basically said that the whole album is her response to that shade, so not responding does seem kind of petty. That being said, I do like Caramanica, and not saying anything > panning it, I guess. Animosity from an artist has been known to influence how you perceived that artist's work. But to the extent that he influenced one of the AOTYs, I guess he should be... proud?
