none of these things are what make beyoncé's album good or remotely relevant to lemonade's quality

Beyoncé has been selling records and touring like an important musician since I can remember.

well she has been an important musician all this time, i'm talking solely about critics

the super bowl, you say

banfred bann (wins), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

dunno what the super bowl is but i remember beyoncé graciously permitting a football (? baseball? basketball?) match to be appended to one of her concerts this year

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link

I don't even mean Dawn's album is better. I'm just not seeing it in many lists alongside Beyonce etc. Anyway, I just think I hate watching any sort of musical consensus form, this is a losing fight

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link

is Whiney talking about Coldplay rn?

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:33 (seven years ago) link

consensus is exclusion

also lol lex

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:34 (seven years ago) link

Beyonce's last album would have been way up there had it not been released in December with no publicity. 4 did pretty well IIRC. Of the others only Birthday is even vaguely meriting of a high position in any of these lists and even then it was probably outdone by a lot of shonkier records.

Can we ban Louis from this thread

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link

the super bowl is a controversial but popular american event where spectators enter a stadium and queue up to take a bit of cannabis housed in an american football field-size bowl

they sit down and people-watch as entertainers perform all types of art forms. there's a cloud of mystery as to whether the entertainers themselves are stoned

just fyi

"I just think I hate watching any sort of musical consensus form, this is a losing fight"

Pretty sure you would be wetting your pants if a critical consensus was forming around Jute Gyte and the Cardiacs. Or you'd be complaining it was forming around the wrong records.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

I'd be uneasy tbh

I hate to tell you this but every year since sometime in the 60s has had a consensus for rock & pop albums.

I expect it goes back further for jazz

One of the ilxors most obsessed with data and lists is just diarreahing all over this thread over and over again to say he hates the actual outcome of data and lists

can't wait for louis to see the first set of country albums to appear on the ILE year-end thread.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:42 (seven years ago) link

I just want everything good represented. I want wildly differing lists with maybe a few albums cropping up multiple times, or more precisely multiple albums cropping up a few times. That isn't too much to ask for.

I like my own data and lists for personal tab-keeping reasons. I like looking at individuals' lists. That's a completely different thing to tabulating every list into one big consensus-ball. Data and lists are not just one thing. They're a world of grey areas.

ILE can have the country albums sure lol

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

Voting will start on the metal thread today or tomorrow, so in a weeks time we can see if Jute Gyte wins it

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

i like most of the music lex has been boosting lately. why u break heart :(

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

lj you wont get wildly differing lists. go look at rocklist.net or rym and you will see most of the same albums in a different order.

If you wilfully try to do a different list then you may not be accurately representing your taste.

The reason the ilm polls work is because I think people genuinely love King, Jute Gyte, Dawn or Annie not because they feel they shouldnt vote for music they like but is on other lists.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

nme and melody maker lists from the 70s right up until the end all had a huge amount of the same albums just in a different order. spin.rs, etc probably the same.

What you are actually saying is "I don't want the result of a poll"

publications should just have their writers toss their lists into a bowl and run with the first one they pull out

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 8 December 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link

they should compile a nominations list and make it mandatory for their staff writers to hear every record on the list before voting

that's in an ideal world. maybe I do hate poll results (ilx aside) though. won't post here any more after today

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

how mindful, how active, would you all say the inclusion of solange on these lists is. i'm not asking that to make a point about the album's quality like for blond. but really i don't have any confidence in the dialogue being there

r|t|c, Thursday, 8 December 2016 22:23 (seven years ago) link

i was completely taken by surprise by the solange album belatedly bowling me over - in the week after the us elections i often felt like it was the only thing i could listen to, which i didn't see coming. the initial wave of praise was suffocating (as initial waves of praise always are these days) but it's a really special album on a very real level to me

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 23:24 (seven years ago) link

I've a heart of stone when it comes to that album but I've friends who like lex have embraced it since Nov. 8.

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 9 December 2016 11:50 (seven years ago) link

If you ignore the uniform adulation for Bowie, Radiohead, Nick Cave, Cohen and Iggy, albumoftheyear's aggregated list seems reasonably or at least predictably well representative of newer acts and genre range.

It's worse than GAPDY if you think it matters that the five this time are all decades old.

nashwan, Friday, 9 December 2016 12:35 (seven years ago) link

interesting thing to me about the aggregate is how high kanye is placing with a record which seems widely to be considered a misstep. in the aoty rankings it's the highest placing record without a #1 vote. this i think is perhaps a better example than beyonce (whose record truly is superb) of someone getting plaudits based essentially on name recognition.

what's kind of brilliant about that album to me is that it conveys both serene and restorative tranquillity but also total broken-down (and very specific) depression simultaneously. it builds the former out of the latter but not in a worthy "how to overcome sadness through being excellent" kind of way, the sadness is the core of it.

lex pretend, Friday, 9 December 2016 13:02 (seven years ago) link

like, it actually feels like being so fatigued that you want to give up while also ultimately working towards a kind of hope and making the case for these states of mind being intertwined if not the same thing
