probably worth remaining quiet and coordinating between the aggrieved privately in email because if you are corroborating things in a public thread like this, and it is in fact a scam, then said person could read this and determine how to craft the story

I mean, I was active on irc and newsgroups or w/e in the mid/late 90s and with pictures less common all kinds of weird shit went down, so... just do some basic due diligence if it looks scammy

luna victimized a lot of people in a number of different ways, ranging from glancing to grievous. at some point nearly a decade ago, quite a few of the folks who'd been maybe lightly winged said 'yo, something's not right, leave her alone, it's best for all of us' and a bunch of concern trolls popped out and said 'hey, she's got good points too and she's a beloved poster who is perhaps mentally ill' and then she continued to fuck with people and then greater consequences ensued and because chaki said 'she's fake' in the wrong tone of voice people didn't listen. and while that doesn't diminish the capacity of the initially outspoken folks (me included) to feel concern/compassion for those who were INITIALLY victimized, the SUBSEQUENT victimization of other posters – while admittedly very upsetting - does contain a note of 'yeah, we were telling you this shit was a very real possibility, and we even included examples.'

(apologies of perhaps i'm misreading this current flare-up, but it tugs on some old tensions in a way that makes me uneasy)

Unfortunately there was one person who gave her a lot of money. I think he pretty much knew who she "really is". For the rest, she spent many many hours over many years communicating with them for almost no payout. There was some emotional manipulation, but I think even that was relatively minimal. For an inveterate con artist, that's a pretty shitty record.

assuming you know the interior working of that "one person" is a really bad look here imo

there were a few recent articles about military romance scams where someone would claim to be someone deployed in the army, etc, and ask for money to secure important things like child expenses, whatever. it's sad and desperate but at the end the moral was almost always this twinge of longing for something that was never real. there was no soldier, no kid with a negligent mom he needed money for, no fee he could pay to get out of the army. all shadows used to extract money, sympathy, attention. but you feel for the women who wanted these people to be real.

at the same time, you feel for the couple interviewed family members who were constantly skeptical and begrudgingly helped out their family member who spent all their emotional and financial capital on a ghost

be well, because while money is necessary to survive, your inner life and emotions are the actual survival. communicating w/shared intimacy, fake or not, is insanely valuable. like, that master grifter capital
