"Welcome to the Village Voice's annual Music Critics Poll (formerly known as Pazz + Jop)"

RIP Pazz + Jop

geoffreyess, Saturday, 3 December 2016 02:09 (seven years ago) link

Why would you fuck with the name? Especially for generic ass one?

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 3 December 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link

"NFL Annual Championship Game Between the American and National Football Conferences"

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 3 December 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link

Probably some unhip marketing person going "what's a Pazz"? What's a Jop?" No one knows what means.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 3 December 2016 21:17 (seven years ago) link

what that means

curmudgeon, Saturday, 3 December 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Good for them. "Pazz and Jop" is a fucking terrible name.

whereas the hip marketing person is strutting around like 'Pazz! Jop! Zappatypow! Hoobalooba! Ramalama shakkow! Zump! Haha'

sleepingbag, Saturday, 3 December 2016 23:11 (seven years ago) link

i agree that pazz & jop was always an awful name

dyl, Sunday, 4 December 2016 01:25 (seven years ago) link

it had a shred or two of character though

who gives a fuck about the annual Music Critics Poll

qualx, Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:53 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, if anything, now it sounds LESS interesting.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link

anyway i have no idea how i'm still getting invited to participate, i haven't done any music writing in years and i could've sworn there was a point where they were like "please resubmit your credentials" or w/e, maybe not

qualx, Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link

I voted for either 2 years or maybe 3 years in the mid-00s, and then one year nobody sent me a ballot and I never bothered to find out why because I'm lazy. And now it's been a really long time since I've written anything anywhere.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:58 (seven years ago) link

Is there a VV contact more responsive and/or less inundated than the generic address through which the ballots are sent? Trying to get a colleague added to the mix.

Andy K, Friday, 9 December 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

Neil deMause, the Special features editor is listed on the email that was sent out but not his email

His about page just gives a form link to send messages to a general box I think

deadline in 4 hours

alpine static, Saturday, 24 December 2016 01:06 (seven years ago) link

submitted an hour late because I suck, hope it's counted

I submitted late too. Nous verons.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 24 December 2016 13:30 (seven years ago) link

perhaps it will be for the best if it isn't counted, I forgot to put swan song series on it

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Sunday, 25 December 2016 03:04 (seven years ago) link

Heck, I forgot to *listen* to Swan Song Series. It's not every year Tanya Donelly and Kristin Hersh both release insanely long albums, and I barely got to either :(

Results tomorrow?

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 19:37 (seven years ago) link

No, it'll be in the 1/25 issue this year.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 11 January 2017 15:01 (seven years ago) link

Two more weeks, gotcha.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 11 January 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

So we won't be able to put P+J placings in the tracks poll images? What a disaster for tradition :(

David Bowie- Blackstar tops the albums

and Beyoncé "Formation" tops the tracks

my comment about Tiwa Savage (featuring Dr. Sid) afropop/afrobeats track made it!

Not Pazz & Jop 2016

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 18:14 (seven years ago) link

So they didn't change the name.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 25 January 2017 23:55 (seven years ago) link

nine months pass...

I know this is even earlier, but there have been some... "developments" is exactly the opposite of the wrong word, at the Voice this year

so, uh, is this still happening

My sources say: Yes.

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 20 November 2017 17:05 (six years ago) link

But voting may be a lot earlier than in past years, and for scheduling reasons I may not be involved...

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 20 November 2017 21:19 (six years ago) link

why are the results for past polls impossible to find on the voice's site now?

dyl, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 23:42 (six years ago) link

when I want results I go here:

alpine static, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 00:14 (six years ago) link

Thanks alpine! I told yall wrong about the date I got last year's ballot: Dec. 13, not Dec. 4. But I'll keep Glenn's xpost heads-up about the speed-up in mind.

dow, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 01:37 (six years ago) link

If they move it up any more this year, that may well be the end of the road for me. The antiquarian notion that the year actually ends on Dec. 31 used to sync up well with my workaday life. The rush to get year-ends out earlier and earlier is just one more thing that makes no sense to me.

clemenza, Friday, 24 November 2017 02:36 (six years ago) link

I think it has to do with people ceasing to care about last year once the new year has started.

President Keyes, Friday, 24 November 2017 02:46 (six years ago) link

Maybe--which is actually pretty weird, since the calendar year is such an artificial construct anyway. And it's also almost like giving out sports MVP awards with two weeks left to go in the season.

But I guess I prefer that to the idea that every publication is simply being driven by what every other publication does.

clemenza, Friday, 24 November 2017 04:01 (six years ago) link

The truth is, I'm just looking at this in terms of my own participation and nothing else.

clemenza, Friday, 24 November 2017 04:03 (six years ago) link

The antiquarian notion...

Found only in rare and expensive books, I guess--let's go with antiquated instead.

clemenza, Sunday, 26 November 2017 04:59 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Unless I've been dropped from the list--something that should have happened 15 years ago, and since it didn't happen then, I'm not sure why it would happen now--I assume this is the end of Rico.

clemenza, Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:01 (six years ago) link

I've gotten nothing either.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:03 (six years ago) link

Knowing nothing about how these things work, I always assumed it'd be the one thing that would remain till the last online edition--that it was one thing they could reasonably expect would generate some ad sales. I really am living in some 1987 time warp.

clemenza, Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:05 (six years ago) link

When it comes to the "media landscape," I mean. Mostly I live in a 1972 time warp.

clemenza, Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:07 (six years ago) link

Glenn, upthread, thought they would start earlier this year, but that hasn't happened.
