He tries to explain - but not excuse - the mindset of the nerdy guys who hate women mostly because they feel rejected by women. And he wades into the blistering Gamergate battle, taking the side of female gamers and game developers when they complained about their treatment by male gamers -- who responded, naturally, by treating them even worse, attacking and vilifying them.

Meanwhile, though, the self-involved Arthur neglects and pretty much marginalizes his own wife, Eliza, who suffers from a debilitating chronic condition but puts what energy she has into supporting Arthur's hopes and dreams. In one telling scene, she tries to talk with him about her own struggles, and her own dream (writing a sci-fi novel), while Arthur scrolls through his phone, never looking up at her.

I feel like gamergate somehow opened the gates of hell. Everything is worse since then.

"arthur -- who has less depth than a full-length documentary requires"

the quiet harshness of this line is awesome

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 21:44 (six years ago) link

It's fucking crazy because the GG weirdos think anyone who has an opinion on sexism or racism is only saying it to get attention, but then there's dudes like this who really did jump on because they needed a platform

mh, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 21:44 (six years ago) link

He's the worst. His whole take on gamergate was ridiculous, lumping in all men who are romantically frustrated with a highly vocal minority of radical misogynists. Gamergaters are hateful because they're hateful, not because they are nerds.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

It was self serving too: he was the "reformed nerd" who wanted to be congratulated for not being part of a literal hate movement.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 22:25 (six years ago) link

yeah I don't need a nuanced summary of his takes. he has bad takes.

mh, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 22:27 (six years ago) link

i've avoided reading anything about gamergate ever bcz who the fuck cares about "video game culture" or whatever but arthur chu's take on p much everything is either unremarkable twitter hysterics or lame contrarian shit clearly designed to get him yet another clickbait piece with his byline on it

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 22:37 (six years ago) link

A friend of mine has another local (Cleveland) friend who is a member of a networking group for young Asian-Americans in Northeast Ohio. She told him that Chu, who had never previously previously been involved with the group, started showing up some time well after his Jeopardy winnings must have reached him, hitting other people up for money for this doc.

"Dems need a more populist approach" is the Southern Strategy repackaged. If your base can't bear other people existing? Get a new base.

q for ppl who use twitter: when people tweet things like this, how are they understanding "populism"? Is elizabeth warren one of their enemies?

Treeship, Thursday, 22 June 2017 01:44 (six years ago) link

Populist as in white populism, as in dont talk abt integration or criminal justice reform but do talk abt health care and infrastructure

yeah this is basically correct

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 02:31 (six years ago) link

my take was that gamergate was a little iceberg tip indicating that popular opinion of kids, or people who think like kids, never look at society at large or the consequences of poor representation of minority voices in what they're into, and they take any criticism or change as a personal attack. it's endemic, and while it's hard to figure out how to support the right people, it takes more effort than writing generalities, like finding out good people and writing positively about their efforts

I am far from the best example because I speak wildly all over the place here and other places, but if I had the opportunity to have a platform, I'd like to think I'd just throw some money to people making a good effort, or use my fame the best I could to support others without trying to become a demagogue or enrich my own standing.

chu is the guy who saw a bonfire and thought his best move was to light his smores on that fire and wave them around to get attention

mh, Thursday, 22 June 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link

I actually had some dumb weird twitter conversations with people of color (idk they were probably sock accounts) who were pro-gamergate and hated the chu-style arguments because they felt aggrieved or blamed

all it takes is to ask how little effort it takes to reach out to a broader audience, and once you're committed to doing so, figuring out who to talk to so you can do it right. and crediting and compensating them accordingly

poignant reminder of the one time in history somebody thought arthur chu was a "cool guy"

Frank Ocean is the Ultimate Solution (rushomancy), Thursday, 22 June 2017 03:12 (six years ago) link

always took the thread title as thinly ironic tbh

mh, Thursday, 22 June 2017 03:13 (six years ago) link

idk i think when he first burst onto the scene he was pretty likeable. it wasn't until he took of with his LCD SJW schtick that he really became insufferable

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link

iirc immediately after jeopardy he had cool cred with me because he challenged the narrative around him as the 'game-theory-using' guy who 'broke jeopardy,' and called out that the 'bad guy' 'cold' 'evil mastermind' whatever tropes were not separable from a racial imaginary of the computer-like, heartless asian come to beat our honest american children by studying too much. i might be garbling this but it was cool to see some random guy, given a spotlight, choosing to articulate a critical position about that spotlight through the lens of race. don't quite have it in me to wade back through the full ILX discussion which started here: Will that guy on Jeopardy ever lose? but people were saying he'd be a good ilxor; i see his first essay on "misogyny, entitlement and nerds" got props too.

when gamergate came around i also remember thinking he was super OTM on it, not jumping on a bandwagon at all but being one of the many lifelong gamers who spoke out to condemn gamergate and wax on, perhaps navel-gazingly at times, about how they related to the hobby in this different and less fucked up way. maybe it wouldn't all hold up if i reread it now, but at the time the situation was so toxic and tbh dangerous for a lot of people involved that i was extending mental hi-fives to everybody on the right side of the battle. i have never followed him actively and maybe he has posted many insufferable and terrible things since, or that we now have higher expectations of our internet celebrities but it's not so bizarre that ilxors thought he was a cool guy.

Treeship, Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:49 (six years ago) link

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 04:51 (six years ago) link

I like him, but that anecdote about him ignoring his wife is bothering me. I guess I'd have to see the clip in context, but I don't think I want to watch a doc about the guy.

btw clown me endlessly for my old comments here:
LONG DUK DONG

I think he went from using his newfound fame to write about things he knew, from his own perspective, to a point where he's commenting on things for the sake of keeping the ball rolling

it's easy to have a conversation with a few people, decide you've come up with some interesting take on things, and then put it in front of a different person who immediately points out you had a group consensus but it was overall a bad idea. if you're glued to twitter 24/7 you're going to think something a few hundred people were rabidly chasing down the rabbit hole for a day has great importance. but it's just an extension of the "people in a room come to a conclusion" problem

afaict most of his new material is in service to that kind of thing, or weird observations like the gay porn comment jim mentioned

mh, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

his first columns definitely weren't bad, let alone what he seems to shit out on social media every day now

Nhex, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

he has multiple-tweet personal takes on news issues, usually controversial ones, nearly every hour. I'm assuming it's in the hopes one of them catches and he gets a boost of twitter fame, or as part of workshopping what to write a column about
