i think it was the 75 minute running time that did for Blake this time round, i mean shit, not even James Blake would sit through 75 minutes of new James Blake.

4) Marillion - Fuck Everyone And Run (F E A R)

wait, what

soref, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:17 (seven years ago) link

judging by their wiki page Marillion have some fairly touchy fans

In 1999, DJ Simon Mayo commented on BBC Radio 1: "Marillion ... where are they now? And who cares anyway?" Fans objecting to the comment brought the station's computer system to a standstill with thousands of emails of complaint. Mayo subsequently apologised for his comment to keyboard player Mark Kelly when he phoned the show to take part in a quiz.[74]

To accompany the release of Anoraknophobia in 2001, the band issued a press release asking critics to review the album in "a manner that is both accurate and fair. So, our challenge to you is to firstly listen to the album. Then write a review without using any of the following words: "Progressive rock", "Genesis", "Fish", "heavy metal", "dinosaurs", "predictable", "concept album". Because if you do, we'll know that you haven't listened to it."[74]

Rachel Cooke, a writer for The Observer and New Statesman, has repeatedly referred negatively to the band and insulted their fans in her articles.[76][77][78][79]

can't believe that Marillion have been continuing without Fish for nearly 30 years now

soref, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:22 (seven years ago) link

Marillion have huge fan funding support too, it's kind of amazing. I saw Heart an an outdoor concert this summer and Ann's voice is in great shape. Haven't been inspired to hear their new one though. Deap Vally is kind of fun. Pretenders was produced by Black Keys dude but you wouldn't know from hearing it. Cheap Trick album is not good. I love the Purson and Blues Pills, hope this isn't the only list to include them.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:35 (seven years ago) link

i refuse to believe that this iggy pop record is as good as all these lists are claiming

Mordy, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:36 (seven years ago) link

Otm

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:37 (seven years ago) link

First list to include Metallica. I like the first disc plus 2 songs on 2nd.

I was surprised, I thought the Iggy album was going to be forgotten. It's not terrible, but certainly not amazing, too many painfully awkward moments on it. I think it's a combination of reverence for old farts and everything Josh Homme touches.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:39 (seven years ago) link

However, if you have a chance to catch a re-run of Iggy's recent performance on Austin City Limits, do so, it's one of the best shows they've had this year.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:47 (seven years ago) link

It's pretty mediocre, in my opinion. I'm not a fan of Iggy for the most part, but I was hoping for much more with Josh Homme involved.

how's life, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:47 (seven years ago) link

i like it a lot. happy to see deap vally and blackberry smoke on a list

Wire list will be in their January issue, so in a couple of weeks. (I voted.)

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 26 November 2016 16:43 (seven years ago) link

ps i doubt anyones ever seen one outside of London..

Cosmic Slop, Saturday, 26 November 2016 16:43 (seven years ago) link

1. The 1975 – 'I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It'

Worst album title since Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Sit and Think About Things or whatever the fuck it's called.

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 27 November 2016 12:36 (seven years ago) link

i just kind of assume they're going for the creepy stalker vibe on that one, and so i think of it as successful.

xiphoid beetlebum (rushomancy), Sunday, 27 November 2016 12:42 (seven years ago) link

it's more 'earnest youth who through performative rendering of this verges upon creepy stalker' imo

imago, Sunday, 27 November 2016 13:48 (seven years ago) link

9. Lady Leshurr – ‘Where Are You Now?’

NME OTM.

When did you last see any critical volte-face as rapid as the one the NME performed over the 1975?

Matt DC, Sunday, 27 November 2016 16:24 (seven years ago) link

Pitchfork on Trail of Dead lol

imago, Sunday, 27 November 2016 16:52 (seven years ago) link

Hmmm... couldn't get into this Powell record. I was curious and tried, but nothing.

I suspect it will show up on a quite few lists from outlets that don't really focus on dance music. Feels like that sort of record.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 27 November 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

It's secretly like a rock record or something. In disguise.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 27 November 2016 17:19 (seven years ago) link

like black strobe?

a but (brimstead), Sunday, 27 November 2016 19:49 (seven years ago) link

That top ten seems like pretty standard music publication fare at first, and then you have the Rolling Stones stuck in the middle to remind you that this is Rolling Stone.

MarkoP, Monday, 28 November 2016 17:53 (seven years ago) link

Every song I've heard from the Rolling Stones album has been great. I'm actually excited to hear the whole thing.

Matt DC, Monday, 28 November 2016 19:26 (seven years ago) link

So what will this year's acronym be? CROBIB (Cave, Radiohead, Ocean, Bowie, Iggy, Beyonce)? BBOICR?

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 28 November 2016 19:28 (seven years ago) link

Joyce Manor and Dawn Richard making the Time songs list makes me happy.

Mac Miller ft. Anderson.Paak - "Dang!"

I can't remember who tweeted it (maybe some dude), but my favorite capsule review of this track was "Why is Mac Miller mumbling all over this good Anderson Paak song?"

looking forward to p4k's list mentioning the election in every blurb the way they did w/ 9/11

I've read Ta-nehisi Coates. (marcos), Monday, 28 November 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link

5. The Range - Potential

I really enjoyed this, it sounds like what all the positive reviews of the Jamie XX album made me expect from it

boxedjoy, Monday, 28 November 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

'Gardenia' is the one Iggy LP song I've heard and "All I want to do is tell Gardenia what to do tonight" is the clunkiest line I've heard all year.

Whenever I see a mention of The Range, I think "aw, it's nice that Bruce Hornsby's backing band is still doing things."

looking forward to p4k's list Pazz and Jop mentioning the election in every blurb the way they did w/ 9/11 Bush's reelection.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 00:19 (seven years ago) link

Time factor is no excuse for A Tribe getting stuck in the middle of the RS list, since they had time to get it in there at all: one listen should do it for most of the music and enough of the words.

dow, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 00:36 (seven years ago) link

At least.

dow, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 00:37 (seven years ago) link

I know yall know that, just venting sorry.

dow, Tuesday, 29 November 2016 00:38 (seven years ago) link

maybe RS just thought there were 29 records better than that one this year? i don't think that seems all that ridiculous. there are more ridiculous things on that list.
