p.s. Dec 2014 was amazing

Beyonce and D'Angelo each released surprise December albums in recent years that rendered lots of lists incomplete. Kinda a refreshing reminder that not all artists need or remotely care about year-end validation.

December used to be a drop date for a lot of good but shelved albums from rap and R&B B-listers, but that doesn't seem to happen as much anymore.

Evan R, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

Miguel's first album came out the first week of December, for instance. Major labels seem to treat December like movie studios treat January, a release date for projects they don't have high expectations for

Evan R, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:17 (seven years ago) link

Isn't there still 10 % of the year left?

Yes, but EOY lists coming out before the end of the year isn't particularly surprising or noteworthy at this point.

i confess that i can't tell the difference between a bad year end list and a good year end list, but whenever i hear a mediocre record i immediately forget ever having heard it.

I still have Halloween candy left. What the fuck, music press?

how's life, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 23:31 (seven years ago) link

At least FOPP's list has the Warpaint album on it, which is better than could be said for the other lists so far, even if it was far too low.

how's life, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 23:34 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, and the Beth Orton.

Also, Cavern of antimatter, and the top shares loads with the other lists as per, so hey.

gaz coombes of 2016 is quite possibly kate tempest

imago, Thursday, 24 November 2016 00:48 (seven years ago) link

I didn't realize until last week there was a new Kate Tempest record. Then I listened to it. How is it possible for it to be worse than her last one? I don't know, but it is.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 24 November 2016 01:25 (seven years ago) link

The Kate Tempest record might be the worst thing I've heard all year. It's an album with no redeeming features. That and The Anchoress album were the low points of my 2016 listening.

The inclusion of The Courteeners on that Fopp list is the most shocking one for me. The popularity of that group in the UK is baffling.

Surprised to see The Divine Comedy record pop up on a couple of lists. I love that band but it's an appalling album.

I know it's early days, but I have a feeling Shura's album is going to be the most disappointing omission on all these lists.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 24 November 2016 01:47 (seven years ago) link

that james record was ok. some nice droney moments

poor Kate Tempest. her first album wasn't THAT bad was it? (albeit in a 'hey, remember The Streets?' kind of way, admittedly). not heard this new one though

imago, Thursday, 24 November 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link

That Fopp list does read like it was compiled by a lot of people who haven't really liked music since the 90s.

Matt DC, Thursday, 24 November 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link

Kaiser Chiefs not even in the Fopp list. Almost feel bad for the lads.

nashwan, Thursday, 24 November 2016 14:49 (seven years ago) link

Or another perspective, some people are not so quick to drop an artist because they're no longer in fashion. Travis does make me laugh, but to be fair, there's very little that's actually embarrassing. Plenty of other lists will do far worse. While I never liked Garbage, I heard the new album, and it's no worse than the old stuff. Bloc Party, Wild Beasts, The Julie Ruin, Explosions in the Sky, Pet Shop Boys, Primal Scream, Tindersticks, Lucinda Williams are all decent. #60-51 are not unusually retro entries. We'll see Dinosaur Jr on some other lists I'm sure. I like that Teleman is on there, even though I don't think it's quite in my top 100. I don't love the new Suede or Coral, but would take them over Bon Iver. I'm surprised they have De La Soul but not A Tribe Called Quest. Haven't heard the Dexys but would check it out. I used to like Lambchop, but find the latest a chore. Same with the Eno. Just recently heard Christine & the Queens. It's alright, but would never ever say it's close to album of the year territory.

The Piccadilly list has some interesting things:

Camera - Phantom of Liberty - Kosmische
The Mystery Lights - The Mystery Lights - Garage noir and psych. I saw them live last summer, lots of potential.
Cavern of Anti-Matter - Void Beats/Invocation Trex - More Kosmische!
Whyte Horses - Pop or Not - Certainly a unique #1 choice. Slightly psychedelic jangle pop, worth a listen.

Thee Oh Sees, Goat and Psychic Ills will probably turn out to be the go-to psych choices on most other lists. Wolf People, Lola Colt, Syd Arthur, Blues Pills, Purson and Causa Sui remain under the radar for most which is too bad. But what about Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band? They were celebrated in the past, and The Rarity of Experience is a pretty glorious double album.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 24 November 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

Bloc Party...decent.

What u smokin?

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 24 November 2016 15:16 (seven years ago) link

Teleman is a cool inclusion, I agree, but it's a cool inclusion from Fopp's extremely limited wheelhouse

Somehow the Biffy Clyro album still remains the worst band/album on all these lists.

There just isn't anyone as hopeless or talentless out there selling as many albums as those cunts.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 24 November 2016 17:17 (seven years ago) link

the only reason i know who kate tempest is is because [ILXOR NAME REDACTED] texted me in disbelief that SPIN said she had made a better hip-hop album than Flockaveli

imago, Thursday, 24 November 2016 17:23 (seven years ago) link

I dislike Kate Tempest but attempting to sell her as hip-hop is pretty dumb. I know Imago has been trying to make this pile-on happen for about two years though so let him have his fun.

38. Slaves – 'Take Control'
37. Soft Hair – 'Soft Hair'
36. Swet Shop Boys – 'Cashmere'
35. Glass Animals – 'How To Be A Human Being'
34. Let’s Eat Grandma – 'I, Gemini'

I haven't heard a single note of any of these but this is probably the worst run of band and album names I've ever seen.

The brass neck of all that Skepta score inflation as well.

Matt DC, Thursday, 24 November 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

The music isn't very good either. Let's Eat Grandma did one fantastic song a few years ago when they were 13 but the album (including a rerecording of that song) is mostly just annoying

a sort of macho inadequacy 'it's just nooooise' self-pwning incurious sense

uh what? Do you even know what the majority of what made the list sounds like? Undoubtedly people who rep for Fennesz, Oren Ambarchi, Nurse with Wound, Whitehouse, and Tim Hecker are totally turned off by nooooise. Oh and Full of Hell, who had a recent collab with lush melodic masters Merzbow?

Moderately surprised Moor Mother didn't get love from this list.

I hadn't heard nearly half of this list, but in sampling they all seem pretty solid pop, garage punk, jangle, psych, etc.
