KING making the Uncut list is a pleasant surprise. Obviously it's way too low, but it's not an album I expected to see in there at all.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 19 November 2016 23:12 (seven years ago) link

If I had to do a Pazz & Jop today, would prob incl. (in order of coming to mind) The Julie Ruin, Burnt Orange, PJ Harvey (took a while, but worth hanging in there, except for the first two tracks), Beyonce (xgau approves it but says it's more drama etc. than music?) Anderson.Paak, Rough Guide To Ethiopian Jazz (xgau approves it but says it isn't jazz?!),Tanya Tagaq (okay, he gets that one right on), Mekons, maybe Bowie, Cohen---gotta listen more. they don't get extra points for sudden death
Nashville Scene ballot would prob incl. two Willies (Gershwin & Ray Price tribs), Loretta, Austin Lucas, Western Centuries, Randy Rogers Band, Tomi Lunsford, prob Miranda, though haven't yet heard all of it; my hacked-in Americana/Countryoid/Related category will incl. Lucinda, Sturgill, Elizabeth Cook, and, I suspect, Peter Stampfel, though haven't listened to Holiday For Strings yet. Aaron Lewis's new set may earn the Don Henley Country Album Actually Doesn't Suck! Award this year.

dow, Sunday, 20 November 2016 00:40 (seven years ago) link

Have to make room in there somewhere for Toussaint's American Tunes!Prob over Cohen.

dow, Sunday, 20 November 2016 00:45 (seven years ago) link

Is Austin Lucas well regarded? I know him from back in the day, didn't really get on with him at the time, but have lots of friends in common so still see his posts on Facebook all the time, thought that was just a scene echo chamber thing.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 20 November 2016 00:54 (seven years ago) link

No, see recent posts about him by Edd Hurt on Rolling Country; that's what led me to him (other RCers also turned me on to Tomi Lunsford and Western Centuries)

dow, Sunday, 20 November 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

Also considering good new albums by Shovels & Rope and Charlie Daniels (only politics on his this time: implied by the cautionary "Runnin' With The Crowd", about cowboys getting too full of shared identity)

dow, Sunday, 20 November 2016 01:07 (seven years ago) link

I'm sorting out Elza Soares, Austin Lucas, Lori McKenna, Maren Morris, Leland Sundries, Steve Gunn, Richard Lloyd's Roseland, Western Centuries, Miranda,Bowie, Toussaint, Truckers, Bowie, Tommy Womack, Tacocat, Todd Snider, in the top tier so far. Dow, if you haven't checked out Tommy Womack's Namaste, I think you might really like it. Couple-three of the best songs I've heard all year. I need to hear the Stampfel, I'm a huge fan.

Edd Hurt, Sunday, 20 November 2016 02:02 (seven years ago) link

i believe i'm the Western Centuries source, after seeing them at Pickathon. quickly here, since it ain't a country thread: if you like country music, pick up their album Weight Of The World TODAY. it is outstanding. here's a sample: http://www.westerncenturies.com/music/

always enjoy this thread, hope that one dude keeps stats again, thanks for starting it Sloppy

alpine static, Sunday, 20 November 2016 02:11 (seven years ago) link

Checking out Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä and "Saturaatio" has some great guitar on it.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 20 November 2016 16:21 (seven years ago) link

worth noting over here, too (in addition to Rolling Metal) that the absence of Vektor's Terminal Redux from Decibel's list has elicited a universal "wha? why?"

alpine static, Sunday, 20 November 2016 16:41 (seven years ago) link

like i know that's the nature of these lists, but i think all would agree that's a stranger omission than most

alpine static, Sunday, 20 November 2016 16:44 (seven years ago) link

yeah it'd be like if mojo decided to leave off _blackstar_ for whatever reason.

xiphoid beetlebum (rushomancy), Sunday, 20 November 2016 18:38 (seven years ago) link

Quite a lot of love for the Kiwanuka record. I can hear the questing nature at the heart of it, but I dunno, it feels kinda neutered or sterilised.

Isn't there still 10 % of the year left?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 10:01 (seven years ago) link

yeah but labels know the year-end lists are published around this time, so they know that if they release new product in Dec it won't feature in the lists. it's their call.

heaven parker (anagram), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 10:14 (seven years ago) link

As expected, lots of shrines to the dead and dying (no offense Iggy, please don't croak just yet). That's fine. Has the Beyonce worship faltered, or will she come back strong in other lists with lil sis close behind? I like Solange but I thought the album was boring. Would expect to see Dawn Richard. Regarding December releases, Baroness released Purple Dec 18 but they still made some polls. As long as the band's PR team make sure promo streams make it out in time, shouldn't be an issue with the big rags. I'm used to Decibel omitting my favorites, but actually got two of mine this time, Khemmis and Hammers of Misfortune. I don't see how anyone can love the Blood Ceremony and not also include Purson's album. Yay for Mojo putting Syd Arthur in the top 20. Will I see Wolf People, Lola Colt and The Drones?

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link

Since I'll be making them for myself, I'm gonna try to put EOY list playlists here for the ones posted... likely two tracks per album.

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 17:17 (seven years ago) link

I'm assuming that Decibel deliberately go out of their way to make these lists distinctive from a RYM query for best 2016 metal, the top 4 there (Vektor, Ulcerate, Deathspell Omega and Insomnium) aren't on the Decibel list. Which is fine, there'd be no point to it otherwise.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

"We need to make a list of the best 2016 metal albums. Let's make sure we leave off the ones people really like."

xiphoid beetlebum (rushomancy), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 18:08 (seven years ago) link

Well can't speak for everyone but I'm mostly interested in a Decibel list to discover stuff that isn't already widely praised. I want to read which albums are remarkable despite not being favourites-by-consensus. This is also why I really look forward to the Textura list.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:43 (seven years ago) link

Isn't there still 10 % of the year left?

But with the exception of sudden surprise releases, isn't December typically a pretty dry period for new albums?

MarkoP, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

And even if there are sudden surprises, what artist could realistically be doing a surprise release this year?

MarkoP, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 20:52 (seven years ago) link

there's always a handful of surprise stray tracks. looking forward to those.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

p.s. Dec 2014 was amazing

billstevejim, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

Beyonce and D'Angelo each released surprise December albums in recent years that rendered lots of lists incomplete. Kinda a refreshing reminder that not all artists need or remotely care about year-end validation.

December used to be a drop date for a lot of good but shelved albums from rap and R&B B-listers, but that doesn't seem to happen as much anymore.

Evan R, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

Miguel's first album came out the first week of December, for instance. Major labels seem to treat December like movie studios treat January, a release date for projects they don't have high expectations for

Evan R, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 21:17 (seven years ago) link

Isn't there still 10 % of the year left?

Yes, but EOY lists coming out before the end of the year isn't particularly surprising or noteworthy at this point.

At least FOPP's list has the Warpaint album on it, which is better than could be said for the other lists so far, even if it was far too low.

Transform All Suffering Into Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

Please, if I ever become this kind of insufferable dour hateful misogynistic racist snob cunt about my music*, kill me. This kind of closed-mindedness and posturing is a million times worse than any sort of pop music exclusivism. This really raises the mirror to the sorts of people who self-style as experimental music fans and reveals them for the dreadful, damaged bores that they are.

*as was vaguely threatened itt, still so :/ about that

A category for "Worst Album of the Year?" My middle-school-aged child is more open-minded.

doug watson, Thursday, 5 January 2017 19:41 (seven years ago) link

Sort of understand the hate for Jute Gyte in a sort of macho inadequacy 'it's just nooooise' self-pwning incurious sense but voting Weyes Blood as second-worst album of the year makes me entirely suspect the Brainwashed readership to comprise a suppurating hate-riven subreddit of actively bigoted shut-ins (probably confirmed by the seething unchecked Swans support, lack of POC or women etc etc) - it just isn't an album I could imagine anyone with any sort of acceptable social adjustment hating. Even if you can't get with its vibe it's not much more than an intricate pop-folk record with proggy touches and lots of harmonies. If this is what drives you to hatred then you're undoubtedly worthless and probably a localised threat to others.

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Thursday, 5 January 2017 20:00 (seven years ago) link

Since I'm one of the assholes who vote in their poll, let me say that you don't actively vote for a "worst album of the year", you just rate the albums you've heard (love, like, dislike, hate) so a record could get in that list simply by the matter of having a lot of people not liking it. I don't think there are that many voters either so it doesn't even have to be a lot of people.

Dinsdale, Thursday, 5 January 2017 20:15 (seven years ago) link

I think I remember one year (probably 2012? Back when stephen ilxor was still affiliated with them) when one of their worst albums might have actually made the best albums list.

Ummm wait...Dinsdale??

U2 (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 5 January 2017 20:19 (seven years ago) link

that is a truly deranged way to run a poll at the best of times, but with such a voting public (present company excluded I suppose) it becomes actively reckless

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Thursday, 5 January 2017 20:23 (seven years ago) link

Lol Dinsdale am I way behind the curve in figuring out who you are, cuz it took me a whole year to realize rev changed her sn

I'm not a former ilxor or anything like that, so there's no such thing as figuring out who I am

Dinsdale, Thursday, 5 January 2017 20:50 (seven years ago) link

I'll fucking do it

(j/k)

Doesn't that routinely happen with the NME reader polls or am I imagining that

wow the whiteness of the brainwashed list is particularly glaring in a year when yves, dedekind, klein, etc were all basically running down different nurse with wound threads

ooh thanks for those other two recommendations, I already got turned on to the excellent Yves Tumor record via the Spotify playlist

I hope you will take a look at the 2016 music year in review at

I would love to hear your reactions (pro and con).

a sort of macho inadequacy 'it's just nooooise' self-pwning incurious sense

uh what? Do you even know what the majority of what made the list sounds like? Undoubtedly people who rep for Fennesz, Oren Ambarchi, Nurse with Wound, Whitehouse, and Tim Hecker are totally turned off by nooooise. Oh and Full of Hell, who had a recent collab with lush melodic masters Merzbow?

Moderately surprised Moor Mother didn't get love from this list.

sarahell, Sunday, 8 January 2017 22:52 (seven years ago) link

I hadn't heard nearly half of this list, but in sampling they all seem pretty solid pop, garage punk, jangle, psych, etc.
