Anyone else picking up a PS4 Pro? I'm basically their ideal customer here I guess, I've got a 4k HDR screen with not many 4k HDR sources, plus I've been considering getting a second PS4 for a while anyway (so me and my son can co-op in Destiny etc). So I've got one on order. But it's hard to believe there are many other people in the same boat. And I'm not sure what pro functionality I'll even be making use of, Shadow of Mordor and Infamous First Light are both getting patched for Pro and I own both and finished neither, so I guess I'll give those a try, plus maybe Uncharted (which I kinda saved for this). But beyond those, I dunno. Destiny won't be getting an upgrade, and neither will The Witcher (which is currently at the front of my backlog queue).

JimD, Wednesday, 9 November 2016 02:52 (seven years ago) link

they really fucked up not putting a 4K blu-ray player in there IMO
cuz on the other side you've got the new X1 that does have it, plus they have some kind of new machine coming out next year as well (which is also kinda stupid but what can you do)

wondering how much 4K TV adoption has gotten out there yet. feel like it's not gonna go big for a while

Nhex, Wednesday, 9 November 2016 03:44 (seven years ago) link

there are so few 4k bluray releases actually out there that i really dont think its a big thing. by the time 4k bluray really takes off (if it ever does) - it'll no doubt be time for PS5.
i know very few people who still collect physical media anyway - digital stream or download is the way of things and Sony obviously thought it wasn't worth the extra cost to include.

jamiesummerz, Wednesday, 9 November 2016 16:03 (seven years ago) link

Lack of 4K bluray is a major reason why I'm not buying a pro now, even though I was originally holding out for an upgrade. 'Stream or download' is not the way of things if you want great picture quality and if you've bought a new 4k hdr tv you should care about quality.

abcfsk, Friday, 11 November 2016 12:17 (seven years ago) link

I was going to say, is Blu Ray still a thing, it seems to have stalled at half the shelf space of DVDs, but then if you've bought a 4k HDR then you're a little incentivized, I guess?

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 11 November 2016 12:58 (seven years ago) link

Yeah tbh I'm torn, definitely wasn't happy they didn't put a drive in, but then my entire non-4k BR collection consists of about 6 discs and everything else I ever watch, I stream via Plex. Was I really about to start buying lots of 4k BR just to make the most of the screen I've got? Probably not.

Anyway this feels like a worthwhile upgrade to me, the (admittedly few) things that are running in 4k HDR really do look stunning.

JimD, Friday, 11 November 2016 23:32 (seven years ago) link

anyone got any of the big new releases?

tempted by dishonored 2 - i never played the first one but always wanted to. watchdogs 2 also out? titanfall 2?

basically what game should i ask my brother to buy me for christmas?

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:05 (seven years ago) link

titanfall is amazing but very tough and brutal for the first couple of hours of mp. even faster paced than CoD

by all accounts the SP is solid too.

self-clowning cozen of ILX (cozen), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link

depends how good you are at FPS and whether you're willing to watch a few youtube vids on load outs and some of the mechanics. the game itself assumΓ©es quite a lot of knowledge (which I guess you're supposed to pick up from TF1 or the SP.) it doesn't really explain stuff and it can all be very intense at first. TTK is so short too so you have to have your wits about you

self-clowning cozen of ILX (cozen), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:44 (seven years ago) link

oh man that might rule that out - i'm terrible at games and so i tend to avoid difficult games.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:52 (seven years ago) link

the learning curve shouldn't imo be a reason not to play titanfall, it's really a very well crafted game. if you work on the first bit of the campaign you should have enough basic competence to enjoy mp but u may be terrible for a little while

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:52 (seven years ago) link

imo the learning curve in BF1 is a lot steeper and the game overall is more grindy given how long it takes to get around

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:53 (seven years ago) link

just for a little context

geometry-stabilized craft (art), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:54 (seven years ago) link

fwiw the og titanfall on xbox one is one of the very, very few online multiplayer games i've played and enjoyed - i'm generally shit at them but titanfall seemed a bit fairer and friendlier than call of duty or whatever where i just get ground up by pre-adolescents over and over and over. also the contrast as you shift between being a super-nimble weakling and a hulking death machine is a lot of fun

not all those who chunder are sloshed (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 17 November 2016 12:57 (seven years ago) link

i used to play halo a lot online and i liked it but everytime i put the headphones on it was just teens screaming anti-semitic, racist and homophobic abuse. sometimes it was amusing to troll them by telling long banal stories about my day in a monotone rural irish accent for the duration of my gametime but mostly it was terrible.

the gameplay in halo was amazing tho, i've never really enjoyed multiplayer in any other game.

the co-op multiplayer was okay in some games.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:01 (seven years ago) link

i quite enjoyed dishonored on the xbox, and am planning on getting D2

i generally have a tough time with FPS on consoles just because controllers are awful when compared to mouse/keyboard, but dishonored isn't really a "shooter" and i liked the option of playing it 'cleanly' (no kills, emphasis on stealth/problem solving)

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:07 (seven years ago) link

the new one certainly ~looks~ amazing, based on footage i've seen

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 17 November 2016 13:07 (seven years ago) link

xp open online play is a horrible cesspool. the only games i've ever consistently played online are dark souls and bloodborne where players tend to have some respect for each other, griefers are usually funny rather than irritating, and, most importantly, there's no way to speak directly to your opponents

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 17 November 2016 16:11 (seven years ago) link

wow great review. guess i'll be playing that.

Mordy, Thursday, 17 November 2016 16:13 (seven years ago) link

i bought it today. love a bit of winter gaming.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 November 2016 16:24 (seven years ago) link

i still have what appears to be about 1000 more hours of witcher 3 to get through. hopefully by then it'll be on sale.

Mordy, Thursday, 17 November 2016 16:34 (seven years ago) link

same. i can't really justify buying anything else for a long while

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 17 November 2016 18:06 (seven years ago) link

it might be time for me to jump back in. i did my standard move earlier this year where i bought it, got obsessed for 15 hours, then promptly abandoned it, never to return. i don't know why. i didn't even see an embarrassing sex scene (that's how early on i am in the game). i feel like i should get back in just to one of those, if nothing else, it seems like a rite of passage for the modern game player

Karl Malone, Thursday, 17 November 2016 18:11 (seven years ago) link

I got Dishonored 2 and I'm looking forward to it, but it's the kind of game where I need to set aside an hour to get into it. Still playing Dark Souls 3 a lot but it's now turned into the type of thing where I can play it for 15 minutes at a time (ie a couple of arena duels, maybe an invasion), which is nice.

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Thursday, 17 November 2016 18:24 (seven years ago) link

I think I posted elsewhere but I didn't feel like relating to other human beings over the weekend so I bought Batman: Arkham Knight and probably played through half the game

Not bad!

i'm ready to stop playing fallout iv and play something else for a while but i feel guilty bc there's so much of fallout iv left, but also i'm not getting much fun out of it anymore

na (NA), Thursday, 17 November 2016 18:41 (seven years ago) link

Probably time to stop then. I got like that on Skyrim after sinking something like 200 hours into it. Admittedly there wasn't much left to do then though.

groovypanda, Thursday, 17 November 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

I have way too many hours in Metal Gear Solid V, and the end game is either the extra missions where you're either very limited on loadout and unable to use all the cool upgraded endgame gear, or just doing enemy base infiltrations which are kind of a slog

I really wish they had more "fuck em up, boss!" missions where you're using bigass sniper rifles from a great distance and using the weirder gear

mh 😏, Thursday, 17 November 2016 20:35 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I used the decoys maybe.. once? Used Hand of Jehuty like twice for kicks. It would have been awesome to have HAD to use them at some point.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 17 November 2016 22:23 (seven years ago) link

you can, once you get proficient, make it through the main plot of the game without upgrading really anything at all, as long as you upgrade the rocket launcher to take out the one metal gear

mega facepalm occurred the one time I thought I had a tranq rifle equipped and it was actually an anti-materiel rifle. ended up not only removing some poor guy's head, but also wrecking the engine block of the jeep behind him, causing it to blow up and take out everyone

i keep thinking i'll play mgsV once they release a greatest hits package for the ps4 and i can play all the others i've never played before

Mordy, Thursday, 17 November 2016 22:36 (seven years ago) link

I skipped a couple and own the fourth game, but people are highly skeptical they'll ever port that one. I guess coding directly for the graphics on the PS3 made it incredibly taxing to port.

I think the collection for PS3 plus MGS4 for PS3 followed by MGS V on PS4 is the closest you'll get for a long time, especially with Konami kind of taking the franchise into spinoff mode in Kojima's absence

mh 😏, Thursday, 17 November 2016 22:41 (seven years ago) link

Chronologically MGS V takes place after 3 but before 1 and 2

mh 😏, Thursday, 17 November 2016 22:42 (seven years ago) link

yo i didn't know we were talking about mgsv!!!

i just beat the last of the side ops the other night :) :) :) i had like a dozen of those "eliminate the tank unit" and "eliminate the armored convoy" or whtever missions left, which are just like not very fun, but i did it. still gonna dip in this game a bit to finish off some of the other little collectathons, which i am not usually into but i just wanna... idk BE in that game you know? once i'm done with it, mgs as i know it is over :(

this was me with all games for many moons before the witcher 3, and at least two after (fallout 4 and the last of us). witcher 3 really grabbed me - it's easy to just play without any linear goal, but also has a story.

have only started with fallout 4 but still - graphically and generally just feels sort of dull and linear. i assume that changes if i play beyond the first hour, but it felt so basic and samey, unlike witcher 3 which managed to make even boring transit between two points beautiful or silent or full of action, with none of those three superior by default.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 November 2016 22:55 (seven years ago) link

i didn't even finish fallout4 :(

Mordy, Thursday, 17 November 2016 23:01 (seven years ago) link

i accidentally broke it i got this perk or something that iirc lets me snipe heads from like any distance at 95% accuracy and it wasn't fun to play after that

Mordy, Thursday, 17 November 2016 23:02 (seven years ago) link

i found it boring graphically, the horrible weapons interfaces etc etc.

witcher 3 is way ahead of all this shit in terms of sheer joy. like one of my big wow moments early on it was just rowing a boat across a lake and it started to rain, and the motion of the boat on the water plus amazing sound design for the rain - not really seeing that depth in anything else i've played since getting a ps4.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 17 November 2016 23:42 (seven years ago) link

FINE I'll get Witcher 3

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 18 November 2016 00:47 (seven years ago) link

strong move

Mordy, Friday, 18 November 2016 01:18 (seven years ago) link

definitely going to actually finish this now after this thread - i've killed enough bandits, the main quest awaits.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Friday, 18 November 2016 10:41 (seven years ago) link

I gave up on Witcher 3 like a year ago after about 20 hours investment. Just wasn't clicking for me. Started a new game last night tho. Y'all got me.

circa1916, Friday, 18 November 2016 14:28 (seven years ago) link

im worried im a little too advanced in the main story, i want to go back and start cleaning up side quests i think

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 18 November 2016 15:58 (seven years ago) link

this is why i haven't gotten very far i can't pass these up ever
