"this dogshit is squishy like a banana"
"bananas aren't squishy exactly, what if they're still in the peel?"
"well it smells like garbage"
"not like any kind of garbage I've ever thrown out"
"it's stuck to the bottom of my shoe"
"how can it be 'sticky' and 'squishy' at the same time?"
"well it's certainly dogshit"
"i think we've proven you don't understand what dogshit is, haven't we?"
"okay i'm gonna go"
"STAY HERE AND TALK TO ME ABOUT THIS DOGSHIT"

youre acting like there's some objective truth to your dislike of this music but this is actually a recording artist, not literal dogshit

i dont gaf if a bunch of out of touch 30+ year old men think this sucks, im not going to argue w/ your subjective experience of the music, but if you're going to misdescribe it or try & say the banana is made of dogshit, im going to point out that its actually not

i'm really speaking more to your style of argument than the music, but neither are to my taste that's true

i actually don't mind lil peep too much really, but it seems like really in the vein of a lot of stuff now like spooky black and alan kingdom and all that other shit i dunno what makes this so different

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2016 17:04 (seven years ago) link

Struggling to believe Lil Peep is actually a real artist and that this isn't just some algorithmically-generated thread based on everyone's known posting styles.

the question is : will he ever be as successful as yung lean ?

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 7 November 2016 17:50 (seven years ago) link

he will be much more successful than yung lean

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2016 17:57 (seven years ago) link

deej also what is the extent of your jazz training? do you play? or were you a music theory major or something?

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2016 17:57 (seven years ago) link

hand-sewed spiritual jazz hats iirc

Οὖτις, Monday, 7 November 2016 18:02 (seven years ago) link

i played trumpet for idk 12 years, ~3-4 years seriously in HS-> college before realizing i didn't want to be a music major. i still have my trumpet. studied classical & jazz, did a couple summer programs for jazz around that time. played in a jazz combo for a bit in high school out of a real book, haa. Jazz was big at my H.S.—one of the guys who graduated when I was a freshman was asked to join lincoln ctr jazz orchestra by wynton iirc, and a guy i graduated with still plays trumpet & works as a musician in LA, you can hear him on trumpet on this terrace martin live performance of kendrick's "for free" https://soundcloud.com/terrace-martin-music/terrace-martin-friends-for-free-live-at-del-monte-speakeasy

i was interested mainly in improvisation & did a lot of trying to transcribe solos. i can also circular breathe, lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

cool you should start to play again! terrance martin thing is really good

i'm pretty sure i'm the first person to have thought of this but maybe you could combine ~~~jazz & hip hop~~~ think about the possibilities

here's someone who gets it

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2016 18:36 (seven years ago) link

I'll jump on the pro-Peep pigpile and agree with D-40. There's something there. I love the track White Wine with Lil Tracy. My wife and the few friends I've shared it with are like, NO. This is Warped Tour burnout, I sell Oxy and chug magnums of Yellowtail at the gas station shit. He's going to be bigger than Spooky Black and Yung Lean.

Yelploaf, Monday, 7 November 2016 18:41 (seven years ago) link

he's probably already bigger than yung lean and spooky black

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

at least going by streaming numbers considering pretty much no mainstream press has picked up on him yet

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 November 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

yes, im just saying its not like i expect the majority of my demographic cohort to love it, just those with exceptional[ly contrarian] taste

How is it contrarian to make a thread about a new artist I like before anyone on ilx has even weighed in

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2016 21:29 (seven years ago) link

Because he's not very good?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 7 November 2016 21:36 (seven years ago) link

I wouldn't necessarily say "contrarian", probably more "weirdly optimistic in the face of an overwhelming historical trend re: how ppl here react to acts like this"

¶ (DJP), Monday, 7 November 2016 21:40 (seven years ago) link

xxxp - let's hope so. i voted for the Socialist, Alyson Kennedy.

Yelploaf, Monday, 7 November 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link

oh deej loves it

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 November 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link

between 'beemer boy' and 'gym class' man i feel like lana del rey looms over this. of all people.

goole, Monday, 7 November 2016 21:44 (seven years ago) link

"Acts like this"...the point I made in the opening post was that this was an example of an artist like years & years where it sounds bad on paper but is actually good, which has recently had a pattern of positive responses on this board actually. For some reason I can't understand the first responders on any thread I make about music are ppl like joan shakey forks et all who I share little in common w musically at least as far as new music

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2016 22:15 (seven years ago) link

Oh. I'd argue that Years & Years isn't really that good either, rendering the thesis null and void but eh, pvmic etc

¶ (DJP), Monday, 7 November 2016 22:19 (seven years ago) link

(I also think the specific type of artist you were thinking of would come to other people's minds more readily if you, you know, named them when you made allusions to them.)

¶ (DJP), Monday, 7 November 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

I was the 7th person to post on this thread and I posted like 2 things but sure ok we are all out to get you

i like that, sounds like blink-182 x witch house

johnny crunch, Monday, 7 November 2016 23:00 (seven years ago) link

he's making the underlying pop melodic associations we have with pop punk

if pop punk you mean the mall punk whatever smashmouth type stuff then yes, that is very present here. Unfortunately for me.

sarahell, Monday, 7 November 2016 23:52 (seven years ago) link

@ jordan : yung lean has a song with 20M views... he's not as popular.

The European weighs in on the popularity of a European rapper

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 8 November 2016 00:30 (seven years ago) link

i think spanish people couldn't care less about a swedish rapper though.

ANU (sisilafami), Tuesday, 8 November 2016 00:50 (seven years ago) link

yung lean's most recent videos have like 1-2 million views, peep isn't quite there yet but also has no press or record label

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 November 2016 03:23 (seven years ago) link

So... He's not as popular

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 8 November 2016 05:55 (seven years ago) link

yung lean is completely forgotten in the us except as a meme maybe. im sure that currently, peep has a good claim on being more popular

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 8 November 2016 06:22 (seven years ago) link

like, post malone's album is about to flop, most guys in that ironic cloud rap vein have the lifespan of a meme
