the common demeanor of rap & grunge is skate right ?

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 7 November 2016 12:26 (seven years ago) link

I get that for you this is about cultural positioning ("the thing I like could not sound like the thing I don't want to be seen as liking"), which is not a surprise, but this dude sounds mainly like mainstream indie rock. he does also sound on that second tune like Blink-182

This isn't abt "cultural positioning" I just think you don't actually get what this is or where it's influences are coming from, you think this sounds like "indie" and I think indie rock is probably the ninth most popular form of music having an influence on a nineteen year old kid listening to popular music in 2016 & while there might be some textural or surface level commonalities w the genre it's really not a primary touchpoint for this nor does it really reflect his sensibility or approach--this is very sincere music & he writes lyrical w a brush that feels much more like rap meets emo than something intended to appeal to ppl reading gorilla vs bear or whatever. I do agree to some extent about the blink 182 thing

Ah yes, there's nothing that millennials love more than the 20 year legacies of things, which is why all new music sounds likes Cibo Matto

I remember when Salem and How to Dress Well came out, my first thoughts were how they truly honored and respected and appreciated the 20 year legacy of Houston rap

I thought to myself "maybe I'm being too dismissive of this dude based on 90 terrible seconds of 'Beamer Boy'" and decided to listen to "Kiss"

This does sound a LOT like Violent J singing over a Chainsmokers downtempo track, deej

"well it's certainly dogshit"

youre acting like there's some objective truth to your dislike of this music but this is actually a recording artist, not literal dogshit

i dont gaf if a bunch of out of touch 30+ year old men think this sucks, im not going to argue w/ your subjective experience of the music, but if you're going to misdescribe it or try & say the banana is made of dogshit, im going to point out that its actually not

hand-sewed spiritual jazz hats iirc

Οὖτις, Monday, 7 November 2016 18:02 (seven years ago) link

i played trumpet for idk 12 years, ~3-4 years seriously in HS-> college before realizing i didn't want to be a music major. i still have my trumpet. studied classical & jazz, did a couple summer programs for jazz around that time. played in a jazz combo for a bit in high school out of a real book, haa. Jazz was big at my H.S.—one of the guys who graduated when I was a freshman was asked to join lincoln ctr jazz orchestra by wynton iirc, and a guy i graduated with still plays trumpet & works as a musician in LA, you can hear him on trumpet on this terrace martin live performance of kendrick's "for free" https://soundcloud.com/terrace-martin-music/terrace-martin-friends-for-free-live-at-del-monte-speakeasy

i was interested mainly in improvisation & did a lot of trying to transcribe solos. i can also circular breathe, lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

cool you should start to play again! terrance martin thing is really good

i'm pretty sure i'm the first person to have thought of this but maybe you could combine ~~~jazz & hip hop~~~ think about the possibilities
