Sewing three of that kid's severed fingers back on is going to be a great memory, which will bond the family together.
(That said I would generally agree that a collaborative and/or creative endeavor is a much better vehicle for learning than a competitive sport. I'd like to live in a society that gave more medals for working together toward a goal, and fewer for CRUSHING THE OPPOSITION. But that's just me.)
― marzipandemonium (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:09 (seven years ago) link
Home ec and shop would be great classes to reintroduce to kids without the gender bullshit that accompanied them in the past - unfortunately the same people who post images like that tend to vote for people who want to gut public schools except for the football team.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:11 (seven years ago) link
The apparent age of that kid is much too young for him to have the coordination to operate that saw in a safe or useful manner. Would you give a 4 year old a nice razor-sharp pocket knife as a gift? Besides that, even grown ups don't use a freaking hacksaw on a piece of 1/8" veneer.
― a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 23:16 (seven years ago) link
possibly more at home in the society is in the gutter thread.
it isn't a terrible philosophy but how many people can easily go hiking or raise animals? even having access to woodworking and gardening might not be that easy.
this smug back to basics downhomey handwringing makes me want to extol video games and emoji. and competitive sports.

raise animals and have them learn to care... about how cute, yet potentially tasty, those animals are. Only when Junior has slit the throat of his favorite piglet will he understand the CIRCLE OF LIFE

I, and all the parents I know do all that stuff as best as our lifestyles and resources can afford. All the kids I know do all that stuff, play outdoors, climb trees, chop worms in half with scissors, make terrible breakfasts for their parents etc. Feels like people who agree with that stuff either don't know any children, or maybe they're not a hippy like me.
― everything, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 01:55 (seven years ago) link
my not-so-subtle indictment was that kids generally do activities with their schools and caregivers, with parents (hopefully!) being the main caregivers, especially among hippie avocado types
so if people can unironically post that shit without realizing the kids do the activities that their parents spend time to do with them, then lol
imo we need a "why won't kids stop playing on their tablets and just binge Netflix like normal ppl" meme
