Bernie Sanders now in the Senate
http://www.benningtonbanner.com/localnews/ci_4622121

BURLINGTON - Hundreds of supporters chanted "Bernie! Bernie!" at a victory party that welcomed the maverick independent congressman who calls himself a "democratic socialist" into the U.S. Senate.

"The people of Vermont have told America they are sick and tired of right wing extremism!" Sanders told the crowd, which punched red balloons into the air. "This election tonight may be the end of a campaign, but it is the beginning of a grassroots movement across America!"

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 11:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Vermont is now a Red State.

Though also quite scary. In Freeper world, it's un-American to criticise the President and treason to vote against his party. Unless, of course, the Prez happens to be a Democrat, in which case HE MUST BE IMPEACHED.

It will be a 25 foot wave, but I'm thinking it will be a pickup along the lines of 30 seats for Dems in the House. A wave that big will probably be big enough to add enough collateral damage in the Senate, and here's what I think: Dems will win MD, MO, NJ, OH, PA, RI, and VA.

She is not the person in this photo I want to see crying.

Here's hoping this photo doesn't follow her throughout her life like a bad penny, and that instead she grows happy in a...I dunno...Christian lesbian electronic music collective or something. And that she always has that doll, and that doll's outfit always matches her outfit (or vice versa), that would so rock.

Affirmative action ban OK'd

Jennifer Gratz, the U-M applicant in 1995 who was wait-listed and later spurred the case heard by the Supreme Court, served as the executive director of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, sponsor of the proposal.

"I am excited and hopeful that Michigan will finally be a place of equal opportunity for all," Gratz said Tuesday. "The people of Michigan are the ones who have won today. They stood up to big business, big labor, to the entire establishment and said, 'We want to be treated equally.'"

Let's all sing "We Shall Overcome"

does the american version of AA demonstrably lead to a disproportionate population of ethnic minority and women workers in the jobs that are AA'd (i.e. literally out of proportion to the population who apply for those jobs) or is it just bollox?

has MT been officially called yet gabbneb?

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

answer: no

don weiner (don weiner), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 12:52 (seventeen years ago) link

it's bollox, Alang

there are criticisms of AA but that's not one (mine: that most AA programs reward the economic and cultural elite of the groups they are trying to help)

>> but if she plays it smart, could get some solid legislation thru

> Past Bush's veto?

In that scenario, the next two years amount to a setup for 2008 - if Bush consistently vetoes every progressive piece of legislation to come down the pipeline, the Dems just get an even bigger boost than they had going into this election, with a "Do-Nothing President" to wave around. Bush isn't going to let that happen, so expect the "Uniter, not a divider" stuff to come out of mothballs for some unlikely compromise legislation. See also: 1996 welfare bill, etc.

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

or bush just keeps cramming the wrinkled up dollar bill of his dumbass legislation and bad judges into the now-pepsi vending machine of democracy over and over and over... until he gets that damn drink he wants.

Montana _just_ safe enough for a recount to either be impossible or fruitless.

What the US needs is one of those plastic guards in the pickup slot to stop Republicans from just reaching up and grabbing all the Ike and Mikes on the bottom row.

Meantime, in the one local race that was up for grabs around here -- namely, a public transit/highway expansion measure that required a two-thirds countywide vote in favor -- Measure M's renewal passes! Just under the wire but it made it, thank goodness -- we needed the renewal badly as the population continues to increase, and I'll take a narrow victory over none.

But but, that picture... what's up with Santorum's daughter's fingers? And his hair! Does he have the stars of the US flag as extensions?
Mom is kinda grinning at her democrat lover in the audience, methinks.

Bill Bennett on CNN: "You will see a draft movement for Rick Santorum to run for president of the United States."

Is this why Bill left his seat early? To start campaigning?

OK I'm startnig to come around on this. I've been so stunted and scarred by previous "We woooonn--oh wait, we didn't!" scenarios that I was unwilling to feel celebratory. But I gotta admit right now I'm feeling pretty good.

richardk (Richard K), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I voted for change (yay me!), but I'm going to remain bullish. Hearing this dude spastically bloviate on the way into work this morning wasn't exactly inspiring.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Re Murtha - cue Patrick Murphy! I was subjected to a freeper style takedown after criticizing dude for having no apparent politics. As the Democratic caucus grows more and more conservative, these "victories" seem increasingly Pyrrhic.

[I want to say "We're talking about Congress" in Allen Iverson's voice.]

blackmail (blackmail.is.my.life), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 14:20 (seventeen years ago) link

this is pretty exciting!! but, in colorado the gay marriage ban has passed AND giving domestic partnership rights to same sex couples DIDN'T pass. bah. The fact that the stem cell thing failed in MO is pretty much a bummer, too!

So once again:

If Conrad Burns wins Montana, and he's indicted via Abramoff, does Burns appoint a replacement himself, or is there a special election?

so, Burns has won my county (Gallatin) by about 182 votes, from the looks of things.

donut - don't know, in other states i've heard of the governor appointing a replacement and special elections, but never the resigner choosing.

xpost to gbx.. well, here's to the Bozeman folks who helped keep the county purple.. now it's up to Cascade county i.e. Grand Falls.

yeah, a socialist or a stealth Repub, that's Mainstream Dem logic in action. He's a hack.

Green senate candidate in NY got 1%. Really, "antiwar" people, nice statement in a meaningless election.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm actually surprised Gallatin ended up being so tight. I'm sure Bozeman voted overwhelmingly for Tester, while all the outlying communities went for Burns.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Tester's lead has widened slightly in the last hour, in the 1700s now.
