BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 05:26 (fifteen years ago) link

two months pass...

I saw them in here Denver last week and finally figured out how they get so heavy. They've got a second guitar and bass with super heavy strings tuned really low and aluminum necks.

Rotgutt, Thursday, 6 November 2008 01:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I hate to come off like a moron here.. but....

How do you pronounce Torche?

I'm really liking some this stuff the faster ones on Meanderthal sound like a Big Drill Car/Carcass blend.

chad, Thursday, 6 November 2008 04:08 (fifteen years ago) link

My brother-in-law got me into this band, and after a couple listens I hear a bit of a David Lee Roth thing with the vocals. This isn't a bad thing, mind you.

I've always just pronounced it as "Torch" with the e silent.

HOOS HOOS HOOS on the autosteen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 6 November 2008 05:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Weird, I've always said "torsh". Like a good Canadian, I suppose.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 6 November 2008 07:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Pronounced "Torsh" here too.

krakow, Thursday, 6 November 2008 07:52 (fifteen years ago) link

come to think of it that is probably correct--why add the e if it's silent?

HOOS HOOS HOOS on the autosteen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 6 November 2008 09:05 (fifteen years ago) link

three months pass...

I always thought it was "tor-SHAY". like a pun on "touche". I think I like it better that way.

PS this album rocks, why did I forget to put it on my year-end list?

if you like it then you shoulda put a donk on it (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 02:15 (fifteen years ago) link

oh wait nvm I guess I had it at #8 (?!? behind Kanye fucking West what the SHIT was I thinking)

ILX metal thread voters didn't!
It was no 1 on ILX METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2008 POLL

Hoping it places high in the general albums poll.

sorry but walt mink are just... some kind of punch line to a lame joke somewhere.

Torche is probably one of the 10 best bands going right now imo

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 31 July 2009 04:25 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i really like the album

walt mink was good! their drummer was amazing, he was lenny waronker the record company guy's son
and his sister was the main person of the band That Dog
and he ended up being Beck's drummer for a long time

but sometimes some of torche's riffs on meanderthal remind me of walt mink, like the sorta higher on the neck, cyclical riffs

but yeah meanderthal is great, that's the only one i've heard

they're all good. I like this band a lot, so its a shame they're getting into the whole vinyl-dOO)))d metal fetish 10" shit, so they have all these singles and EPs I'm never really gonna hear.

man i forgot to check their tour schedule and missed them again. i'd love to see them.

i didn't know they had a video for this. this is the one that sounds like big country...

I really don't understand this. Torche to me sounds like Melvins, Helmet and the Foo Fighters tossed into a blender -- which isn't the worst thing in the world, mind you, but isn't very interesting or original to me.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 31 July 2009 14:10 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, you have a band who has FooFighters-sized radio-ready hooks but is playing them with the textures of extreme metal and doom. It's not Shoenberg's 12-tone theory or something, but it's pretty unique.

kschoice (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 31 July 2009 14:21 (fourteen years ago) link

The way I look at it is, if you saw a messageboard ad for a band described that way (which I don't think is too inaccurate wrt Torche) you would probably think 'fuck that noise' - but there's so many clever touches and awesome hooks being employed within that remit that it totally works. Also in a lot of ways it really is pretty original within the confines of heavy rock music

xps I don't have Healer and am unsure how widely available it was but In Return you could get anywhere I thought? Like I say that's just collectorscum nonsense, you don't have to participate

They were so good when I saw them play between Nachtmystium and Boris last year. Kinda sad that Juan Montoya is no longer with them, he was just such a thrill to watch at that show. Having tons of fun and always smiling.

three weeks pass...

A friend recommended Floor many years back. I finally checked out their 2002 album and it's tremendous. It, ahem, floored me on first listen. It took me quite a while to warm up to Torche, who incorporate a wider variety of influences. For pure, gorgeous, single-minded throbbing sound, you can't beat Floor. I only have MP3s and was almost tempted to pay a ridiculous price for the CD. But I look forward to hearing more from Torche. I hope the loss of the guitar player doesn't handicap them too much. They should only get more popular . . . and then reissue all the Floor stuff!

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 05:17 (fourteen years ago) link

They are. It's a 10xLP set.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 11:49 (fourteen years ago) link

To say the very least, it's been a long time coming. The long-rumored FLOOR box set is not only actually happening... it's nearly upon us. Years in the making, everything this seminal Florida outfit ever recorded is contained within this massive release, including hours of material never previously heard by the public. This insane 10xLP (and one 7") box set should include CDs of the same material as well as an extensive booklet of some lyrics, original artwork, band writings and tons more.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 22:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Awesome! Looks like it'll be around November maybe. I can split it with a friend who prefers vinyl.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 27 August 2009 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

The new Torche/Boris split is kinda not good. Real throwaways from them both.
