Yes, I turned it off halfway through. It's just shitty enough in that According to Jim sort of way that it could be on FOREVER.
I kept hoping that the curtain would be pulled back and Stan Hooper would be revealed to be Norm Henderson from the ABC sitcom NORM (which was hilarious), having a bad dream. Then he would go back to his court-appointed job as a social worker surrounded by a talented cast of character actors.

I hate this show. I will not watch it next week. I feel betrayed. Especially since the last show he had in development (for CBS), which DIDN'T EVEN GET TO PILOT stage was an Odd Couple ripoff where he would have been paired with JON LOVITZ. NOW that would have been impossible to fuck up.
I even like Norm Macdonald's movies, which are very shitty. But I hate A MINUTE WITH STAN HOOPER.

I watched the Conan interview and it was pretty entertaining. I was afraid I'd be dissapointed by the sitcom. Glad I didn't check it out.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:15 (twenty years ago) link

but I did finally see Chappelle's Show and while it's not quite excellent or anything, it was pretty damn good. Except for the part where he was driving in a car, or possible an SUV and Mos Def was rapping along to the AM radio or something. I like Mos Def and all, but that was sorta lame.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

Yep, piece of shit. Fred Willard was not funny. And I wanted to punch the shit out of that kid and his retard girlfriend. I mean can they really have a show that has 1500 cheese and butler jokes every week.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:19 (twenty years ago) link

I kept thinking to myself: "So?"
the only remotely funny parts where when Norm would break character, and since he's a pretty terrible actor, that could happen frequently, but it's not enough to save this shitty shit shitterly show.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 15:27 (twenty years ago) link

god, that was terrible. i can understand how critics may like it because norm has no jokes. willard gets jokes. norm's wife gets jokes. the f'n butler gets jokes. but not norm. THAT IS WHY IT IS NOT FUNNY. the only thing that made the norm show funny was that he had most of the jokes.

but in defense of hooper, i was flipping back and forth between that and tv carnage volume two and nothing beats that Three's Company / scat montage. nothing.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

also, A Minute With Stan Hooper is not funny

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

I turned it off as soon as they introduced the butler. I can handle an obvious plot device as long as it's funny. I mean, why not force the Hoopers to spend the night in a HAUNTED HOUSE before they can even be considered for the lease?

Fuckin' Norm. I think he's the funniest guy, but sheesh, his "legit" stuff sucks.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 30 October 2003 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

It would have been awesome if the butler had been played by a former Seinfeld cast member.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 October 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

So, over all, would you say his new show is pretty good then? Huh. Maybe I should check it out after all...

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:46 (twenty years ago) link

the thing is, this show would be cancel-proof if it was on ABC, it achieves that uniform crappiness that all their other shows have (the real reason they turfed the original FUNNY Norm Show).

dude needs more work. also, can't say this is surprising -
"However, on the January 2, 2008 episode of The O'Reilly Factor, Macdonald stated that he is "very pro-life, but against the death penalty". He also revealed that he supports John McCain for president in the 2008 US Presidential Election"

gershy, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

i was just thinking of him today cuz one of the episodes of fairly odd parents where he plays a genie was on . he should do more cartoon work. he plays norm the genie, of course.

Norm Macdonald returns to returning to television!!

Watched his new "Sports Show" last night. A little bit hit and miss, but 100% Norm. I think it'll warm up, he seems to enjoy himself.

This sketch he did with Blake Griffin was probably the highlight of the show and it's fucking hysterical imo

woot! Let's hope this show lasts longer than that Murray brothers golf show from a few years back (which was also awesome!)

I <3 Norm, he's like Mike Nelson, in that he keeps his politics out of his humour (although I don't think he's as conservative as ol' MJN).

He was on Bill Simmons's podcast earlier this week and did an impression of Gordon Lightfoot singing "Maggie May". Tears.

I'd ask to go on 77 but I'm afraid of what I'd find there.

kind of bizarre - norm's fixation with cock.. i went to see him do standup last year and he spent 20 minutes of his act discussing a cock going into an ass - there was no joke no punchline, he just wanted to talk about it... he was drunk during that show and seems like he is drunk in this interview..

I saw him to 2 hours last Friday. Very funny overall. He did the strict vegetarian bit and let it drag on a bit but it was pretty funny.

“And, finally, to bury the lede, TBS is also working with Norm Macdonald on an unscripted series called Norm Macdonald Is Trending that literally just sounds like a show where Norm Macdonald reads the Internet out loud to you. That… sounds pretty good, actually.”

Seinfeld's views of the homeless on Norm were a bit troubling, but the discussion of comedy craft was good. Norm as always brings the voice of reason and humanity

a bit bummed that the alt-right have started co-opting this guy

he's a jordan peterson fan, small c conservative, anti-pc, so not so much co-opting as just agreeing on some things

was flipping through some Norm stuff on YT and there was something like "Norm MacDonald DESTROYS liberal Hollywood PC comedians!!" or something where it was just Norm saying that there's nothing really funny about a Trump impression when it's done by someone who obviously loathes the guy. which he's 100% right about of course
