This is fantastic. The opening track is already my favorite song of the year.

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 23 October 2016 11:48 (seven years ago) link

Whoa, thanks. Cute shred alert? "Patriot" was my favourite song of last year. I think I liked the single version, where the vocals were more obscured, a bit more than this one. Not carping though.

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Sunday, 23 October 2016 13:27 (seven years ago) link

The stretch of "A Sudden Gust"/"There Was a Door"/"Revive" is heaven. Less sure about the slower songs so far.

From RYM user MrMiniike:

this is such an exuberant fucking delight. This is exactly the album I need in my life right now.

Tempted to change my display name (for the first time in 12 years) to 'exuberant fucking delight'.

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 23 October 2016 14:58 (seven years ago) link

This is really awful.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 23 October 2016 14:59 (seven years ago) link

The vocals definitely don't help but I'm not sure good vocals would save it.

took me a while to realize that "well and spring" is about its build. almost none of the other songs here are about build as much as about being a dense mass of polygons

think my favorite is "the curve"

"well and spring" is about its transition into "a sudden gust", which is truly spectacular

imago, Sunday, 23 October 2016 16:55 (seven years ago) link

but yes, it does build towards this

imago, Sunday, 23 October 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link

wasn't sure if this is my thing from the sampled tracks but i'm about to give this a spin bc my faith in the brad ilm album thread brand is unshaken

(what's up with the tasteless album art though?)

flopson, Sunday, 23 October 2016 18:54 (seven years ago) link

ok this is in fact so great

ciderpress, Monday, 24 October 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link

the start of the last track when the van halen jump suspended synthchords come in is almost too much to take

ciderpress, Monday, 24 October 2016 03:13 (seven years ago) link

i love the moments when stuff happens that doesn't really make sense outside the context of chiptunes like the wacko guitar solo on Wool in the Wash or the synth-trumpet fanfare riff in The Curve

Good and necessary bump. Every single track is a joy, though my favourite right now is There Was a Door. One of my absolute favourites this year.

My brother just sent me the opening song from this the other day. After one listen to the album, it's immediately in my top five of the albums of the year. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

yeah this is top 5 of year for me for sure

ciderpress, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link

loving this album even with the christian rock cover vibe

nxd, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 15:53 (seven years ago) link

this really rules even though it often feels like it shouldn't

the synth textures are odd and wouldn't really work anywhere else but here they're reminiscent of an n64 game or something

Just saw them play a good percentage of this album supporting The Hotelier. It was a pretty amazing performance. They ended on There Was a Door, which was pure space happiness. We spoke to them afterwards at the merch stall and they were very sweet. One of the best features of 2016.

I spilt beer on their merch but I wiped it up with my jumper and I'm sorry

Great clip. Santos seems a little unsure in the first song but ends up delivering better than I've seen in any other clips. Guitarist and drummer are dead-on. How long has this drummer been with them? I don't think she was on the album? (And, apparently, they could explain Dream Theatre to us! Or at least the guitarist could.)

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 15 March 2017 23:07 (seven years ago) link

Yeah Elaiza kills it, really annoyed i missed them in the UK. Think the she just covered this tour for the usual drummer who plays in LVL UP as well.

I remember when Barry Johnson of Joyce Manor raved about Crying, pre-BTFG. I checked out their bandcamp and all I heard was this 8-bit emo band. I was so confused. But this new album is perfect, definitely one of my favorites of 2016. Get Olde Second Wind is still pretty unlistenable tho

Handsome Bookor, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 13:28 (seven years ago) link

Ha, I even like some of that one OK. Beyond the Fleeting Gales was a major step up, though.

Balðy Daudrs (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 March 2017 00:59 (seven years ago) link

I only listened to this after the year-end poll, and I liked it but I had a hard time placing it. That's not a bad thing, I just wasn't really sure what I was hearing. Watching the live clip is helpful, because it made me think of Marnie Stern. These guys are sort of similarly adrift, indie prog or whatever you want to call them. She's talented. Will need to explore more.

(And now I see Marnie is referenced in the OP, so, yeah.)

"i hear perfume" would be a good way to describe this band even if I didn't understand it as a reference & interpreted the words literally

bernard snowy, Thursday, 23 March 2017 14:41 (seven years ago) link

yesterday, this was pretty good. today, three listens later, it's the best album i've heard in ages. love everything about it (except the merely good bass playing and the softer "indie" vocals, maybe). memorable songs, hilarious range of winks & influences, killer keys & guitar, powerhouse vocalist, and zero flab. last four tracks are especially great.

Balðy Daudrs (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 March 2017 19:09 (seven years ago) link
