im probably the only person who cares, but the spurs made their final roster picks. keeping bryn forbes (excited for him, this guy can shoot the 3) and nico laprovittola (yay argentina). they cut the other argentina player garino and one of the 1st rounders they signed from tony parker's french team, livio jean charles. that dudes numbers were super underwhelming at all levels, was rly surprised they had signed him, but i guess it was a cheap enough deal where they could test out his nba readiness without risking him sucking in a real game.

anyway, the spurs have a billion backcourt players now. i think theyve really improved their outside shooting. laprovittola, forbes, bertans can all come off the bench and spread the floor. but theyve got a lot of combo guards. aside fro the big names, the spurs are really young this year.

Adrian Wojnarowsk @WojVerticalNBA
Toronto forward Jared Sullinger will undergo foot surgery Monday and miss extended time to start season, league sources tell @TheVertical.

who he play for

In spite of the fact that the Blazer roster has no major changes and might possibly be marginally improved over last season, I find my best guess about their eventual record, seeding and playoff success to be as uncertain as it was at the start of last season, when almost the whole roster was turned over and they lost 4 of 5 starters.

blazers were one of the healthiest teams last year iirc, my personal guess is they regress by a game or two

call all destroyer, Monday, 24 October 2016 03:16 (seven years ago) link

yeah i think they'll flex back a bit. they prob played a little over their heads last season and i don't think adding evan turner is going to push their team anywhere. i think they prob end up more like the 7th seed than the 5ht.

J0rdan S., Monday, 24 October 2016 03:19 (seven years ago) link

they'll have a much harder time pulling away from the pack this season if the jazz/grizz/mavs/pels are healthier. they kinda had everything break their way last year. my best guess is they'll be fighting for the bottom seeds

ciderpress, Monday, 24 October 2016 03:22 (seven years ago) link

yeah and specifically in their division utah, denver, and minnesota all figure to be better to much better

J0rdan S., Monday, 24 October 2016 03:30 (seven years ago) link

last year definitely had outlier written all over it

Clay, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:25 (seven years ago) link

i think the hornets are the more likely one to stick of last year's surprise standings climbers

ciderpress, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:28 (seven years ago) link

beantown too but they added al

Clay, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:39 (seven years ago) link

nah theyre still gonna suck

Spottie, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:45 (seven years ago) link

ayoooo

Spottie, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:46 (seven years ago) link

blaze shield be ok, every single rotation player on that team should be better than they were last year except ET

Spottie, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:47 (seven years ago) link

*blazers should be

Spottie, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:47 (seven years ago) link

yeah the optimistic side is that you've got a borderline superstar hitting his prime, a genuine scorer and shooter really only playing in his second full year with heavy minutes, and a bunch of ~25 year olds who now have a year of playing together under their belts, which is all pretty good stuff pointing to improvement this year. also stotts is v good too.

Clay, Monday, 24 October 2016 04:50 (seven years ago) link

yeah i like the blaze from the pov of youth improving particularly mccollum and crabbe, dame seems a lil closer to peak tho he cld still have another leap in him, i watched a blaze preseason game and cj was balling out just getting whatever he wanted making perfect reads throwing some good passes hitting tough shots hitting easy shots he looked really good and confident in the flow

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 05:40 (seven years ago) link

feel like hes one of thse players where when youre watching him youre like how is he doing this it doesnt make sense like hes not that quick or athletic or big it doesnt look like hes doing insanely skilled wizardry but the ball just keeps going in

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 05:43 (seven years ago) link

I'd really like to see plums make a significant jump this year but he's never gonna really be a scorer so I guess it'd have to be in defense and idk like bruisering / intimidation factor. Dude needs to learn to swat some shots or something.

Clay, Monday, 24 October 2016 06:04 (seven years ago) link

plums is such a disappointment, all the physical tools in the world and even flashes of having a good feel for the game but just cant put it together

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 06:10 (seven years ago) link

Steve Kerr on the MVP race is pretty hamhanded but I like his conclusion: “I think KD is kind of like Gary Johnson, a third party guy who is going to come in and take a few votes from Steph, takes some from LeBron and then Damian Lillard wins the election. That’s my forecast.”

Clay, Monday, 24 October 2016 06:11 (seven years ago) link

imo kd averages 32 and never once passes to steph all seasom

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 06:12 (seven years ago) link

In this metaphor I'll assume steph is Hillary and bron is Trump and Damian is... Jill Stein?

he's not even old enough to be president I'm worried about steve kerr

Clay, Monday, 24 October 2016 06:24 (seven years ago) link

Since taking the Cavs worked for me, I'll take the Indians in six or seven.

in a proud tradition of blowhard-ass cbs sports NBA writers, chris towers went IN with the brad stevens takes on twitter this a.m.

i've watched a lot of cats do weird and interesting things (slothroprhymes), Monday, 24 October 2016 16:28 (seven years ago) link

lol its funny to get all riled over whether hes the 3rd or 5th best coach, like yeah maybe

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 16:36 (seven years ago) link

yeah nothin really wrong w his claims imo

Spottie, Monday, 24 October 2016 16:39 (seven years ago) link

brad is magical just to be clear

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 16:40 (seven years ago) link

it's not the claim so much as the way in which it's made, which is as if he's responding to an overrating of stevens that doesn't actually exist among rational fans. like you wouldnt catch me saying stevens was as good as pop or carlisle or peak-wizardry SVG, or some such shit.

although, to be fair, i know that high- and medium-high-profile NBA writers' mentions are a maelstrom of homerism from all quarters, insults, bad takes etc, so if he was getting savaged by dumbasses with "617" or "jae crowder MVP" in their twitter handles/DNs, i can understand the urge to snark back. (this urge informs about 45 percent of matt moore tweets)

rn, as a blazer fan, if I had the chance to trade terry stotts for brad stevens, I'd think about it for a bit, but I'm pretty sure I'd stick to stotts, on the basis of his proven ability with these players. they are both in the upper echelon and nearly neck and neck over the past 3 seasons. also, terry is almost literally my next door neighbor. god knows what kind of stupid neighbor I'd get if he moved out.

For now, Mitch McGary is hoping to resume career in China or Europe, sources tell @TheVertical. Wherever he plays, he has issues to resolve.

my god just let them toke the lai, i dont understand how the players let that shit in the cba

lag∞n, Monday, 24 October 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link

the suns just released archie goodwin

Spottie, Monday, 24 October 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

xp i wonder how hard they fight against this and what the terms are that the owners offer for removing it from the cba. the only reason it makes sense to remain is that ownership wants something the players don't want to give

I notice that Portland's second and third highest paid players, Alan Crabbe and Evan Turner, are unlikely to be starters when the season begins.
