Saw it described as Godzilla vs. House of Cards?

Smog Monster is lame.

Saw Shin Godzilla last night. That movie is nonstop panic, and the creature is just wrong in the best way. New one is teal-and-orange bullshit that doesn't respect the classical unities.

Was going to give a handful of reasons to avoid "Rampage", but if you still watch it after seeing the trailer, you know what you're getting into.

No doubt The Rock and Naomie Harris make it watchable, but I was grimacing at the evil CEO logic (she was only missing a coat of Dalmatians), the anthropromorphic monsters and their baseball aim, and the wingman fistbump beat at the end. Less of an inherent awfulness, and more the usual disappointment at a decently budgeted genre movie not trying to be more than bare minimum satisfying a high concept pitch. The last major Godzilla at least went large in scope, and tried to build in some logic and history. Hoping King of the Monsters does the same.

Impressively, this seems both as stupid as the Emmerich Godzilla and some of the sillier Toho Godzillas. And yet:

There’s something so pure and beautiful about monsters fucking shit up.

Not going to lie, I dig that "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" arrangement in that trailer.

I love giant monsters but honestly kept thinking of the death toll of battling gargantuans.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 April 2019 18:09 (four years ago) link

of the gargantuans or the multitudes

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 April 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link

because the former are imaginary and the latter are also imaginary

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Tuesday, 23 April 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link

pretty sure they are both real.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 April 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link

I don't know, for most of the corny classic (and lesser) Godzilla flicks I always thought of them as basically puppet wrestling shows, with no obvious death toll. Stomping models aside, they always went to islands, or other planets, and people were mostly left to cower/narrate. Hyper-realistic scenes of modern CGI devastation I'm not sure add anything to the basic premise of giant monsters hitting each other over the heads with chairs.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 23 April 2019 18:28 (four years ago) link

lol i hear ya

but they are so loud and awesome tho

Just saw the new one. Perfect blend of useless human characters (for the most part) and big huge stomping around, so it wins.

rewatched Ebirah aka “Godzilla vs Sea Monster”, and “Destroy All Monsters” today
(pluto tv has a godzilla channel!)

good times

also attempted “son of godzilla” but bailed early bc 😑 never could get with that one

The Ebirah/Sea Monster one is the hidden jewel in the original run. Go Go dancing teens; fun plot. The best of these films make you think that Japan in the ‘60s was a happening place to be.

Set between 1945 and 1947 apparently, which is a great premise but could easily go wrong. Still, I'm excited for this.

Formica Jordan (Neanderthal), Thursday, 14 December 2023 03:17 (four months ago) link

Minus One apparently v mealy mouthed in its politics. Set during occupation but no American characters, general sense that war is bad but no guesses on why it might have happened and whether anyone might have been responsible. I'll still watch it ofc.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 14 December 2023 11:01 (four months ago) link

seems like a weird critique? I saw it and the film isn't heavily political, but it does have a clear anti-war message, which doesn't really go beyond surface level. but the film is from the perspective of two very poor survivors, one an ex-kamikaze pilot who deserts to avoid having to needlessly sacrifice themselves, and a woman he meets afterward who is raising a child. the whole film largely takes place during the very early days of occupation and their focus is basically doing what needs to be done to survive. idk if shoehorning in the extra stuff mentioning above would have fit neatly, or at the least, was necessary. could see the critique more if an American company made the film, if they were whitewashing their past, etc.

there's a brief mention of McArthur refusing to help Japan fight Godzilla though due to fears of agitating the Soviets, and that US nuclear testing is what makes Godzilla the behemoth he is
