I love this reddit comment so much

Here's a link to the entire message board, if anyone was curious to see. They seem to be freaking out a bit over the podcast release haha.

...because it implies that the So Not Gonna Happen thread is a self-contained, niche-interest message board entirely devoted to that one photo. Wayne's whereabouts have never been far from our minds, but over the past 10 years we've forged friendships and marriages, written SNGH fanfics, indulged in semi-off-topic chitchat to pass the time ("Wayne would definitely be a Trump backer!") and organized meetups complete with SMDH tableau vivants and King of Prussia Hooters pilgrimages. but now we're in a state of turmoil because the Reply All podcast has not only solved the one mystery that made our community worth sustaining, it has also forced us to engage with Reddit and Twitter for the first time, thus spoiling the purity of one of the last isolated pockets of uncontacted Web 1.0 holdouts. sad!

I also wonder if all these 19-year-old Redditors (and even the producers of the podcast) have any real concept of message board culture apart from what they've picked up from off-topic Roblox and Club Penguin forums. I guess ilx is as alien to them as Usenet was to me when I was that age.

tbf ILX is pretty alien

Tough listen because the main host has a voice like a Daniel Clowes character (mouth-breath-y, slack jaw, excessive saliva?)... not to mention the Arnold Horschack machine-gun laugh.

It's a voice that made me pine for Starly Kine's if you can believe that.

Yeah, they should have done a hoax episode in which it turned out Wayne had killed himself because of this thread.

finally listened to this. was dreading it a bit. but was quickly drawn in, on the edge of my seat with each development. found myself oddly touched by the very end though. wayne sounds like a for-real okay dude. i'm glad his life has gone well, and i'm glad this thread didn't like, give him a complex or something. seems like it maybe even gave him a couple of laughs to the extent that he thought about it at all.

i think when i very first saw the thread i was laughing at wayne while kidding myself that it wasn't. i'm about his age though and i have some bleak dorm-room-era photos from disposable cameras, that probably would strike some similar notes to strangers. now i think, hey, y'know, i'm trying to make improvements on my life, i look back fondly to college times even though i think i'm a bit happier and wiser now. me and wayne, we're doing the best we can and life is basically okay. in that sense, it "happened" for us all.

DOCTOR CAISNO, BYCREATIVELABBUS (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 22 October 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

fwiw though, i was always very skeptical of the WaynesCrew RIP posts. but since i somehow missed out on this thread in its original stages (i think i was mostly an ILMer still at that point) i didn't feel super invested in that development one way or the other.

Immediately went to this thread to see what I wrote. Everything written with my post-database fire (and real) name is fine, everything before is O_o. Nonetheless, I don't think any of us were especially cruel or mean and it feels super weird to be judged by a random podcast.

Allen (etaeoe), Sunday, 23 October 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link

It does make me think about my history with ILX. I joined (or at least started to post) around the time this thread started. ILX has been super positive. It's kept me close with IRL friends as everyone moved around and I met some amazing IRL and online friends too. However, it does sometimes force me to remember I was a dumb shit at 22. Hopefully I'm less dumb at 32.

Allen (etaeoe), Sunday, 23 October 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link

I think Reply All is really missing the opportunity for an episode about Vordul getting sonned by a white kid over an AOL beef

Really enjoying Wayne's accent

los blue jeans, Sunday, 23 October 2016 17:30 (seven years ago) link

Sorry, but I didn't think the podcast was all that. Did enjoy the fact that Tommy/Wayne seemed to have turned out to be some sort of likable everyman.

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 October 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

Also, I always thought he was called Wayne because of Wayne's World, but neither the podcast nor Ctrl+F confirmed this, as far as I can tell.
