Prince’s much-vaunted vault of unreleased music is being shopped for as much as $35 million by estate advisers Charles Koppelman and L. Londell McMillan, a source close to the situation tells Billboard. All three major labels are said to be in talks for rights to the music, the source said.

If anything, I just hope that all of that music ends up in the hands of someone that knows what to do with it all. If there must be posthumous releases, I hope they don't end up being cheap, tacky, shoddily put together etc. and for fucks sake, don't fucking radically remix or add overdubs like some idiot did once to the posthumous Hendrix stuff.

I don't think that will happen. There's kind of a cabal of Prince guardians who all have their heads in straight. I feel like there'd be MORE chance of that kind of 'aesthetic mismanagement' if he had left a will and some weird relative was in sole control of the estate.

Susan Rogers should crowdfund a bid. I'd contribute.

along with Questlove and Alan Leeds

it seems pretty likely that Rogers, Wendy, Lisa, and Shiela are gonna be involved

they dont have 35 mil

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 14 October 2016 21:11 (seven years ago) link

if you've followed this circus at all, you'd know that the people running his current estate are wildly fucked. none of the people you mentioned are involved.

isn't a bank in charge

idk, Quest might have 35 mil?

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

i have been following this circus, what I'm saying is that when the bank sells the license for the vault to whatever major label, i'm willing to bet the ppl i mentioned will be brought in to consult and oversee the prep of the material

Goddamn, Controversy ruling my house right now. Title track might have the greatest minimal funk riff of all time.

My least favorite Prince 80s album but easily one of the best tracks he ever did

Note: least favorite doesn't mean I don't like it a lot

Man, I wish he could have made Purple Rain a double album so he could have got the full version of 'Computer Blue' on there.

Least favorite is the Batman soundtrack, obvs. Not that it's not worth having.

idk, Quest might have 35 mil?

I'm sure he's not hurting but thirty-five million dollars is label-owner money, not musician money

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 16 October 2016 14:44 (seven years ago) link

'Controversy' (the title track) is one of the best things he ever did.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Sunday, 16 October 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

Why does nobody talk about Prince? Sure, it's not as "individual" as what came later, but it's leagues ahead of For You and the first two tracks on the LP (not to mention 'I Feel For You') are up there with some of his all-time best. It sounds fucking great, too.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Monday, 17 October 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

it does sound remarkably good compared to his later records. a lot more body to the lows and mids. the imperial phase records have that signature thin/airy sound

flappy bird, Monday, 17 October 2016 22:25 (seven years ago) link

'Bambi' fucking smokes too, even if Prince's voice on the chorus weirdly reminds me of Justin Hawkins from The Darkness.

im willing to bet that this total speculation with no basis in reality will not happen.

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7549866/prince-4ever-greatest-hits-purple-rain-deluxe

Key bits:

The 40-track greatest-hits album, Prince 4Ever, is due on Nov. 22 in the U.S. (Nov. 25 in other territories) and features his best-known songs -- including "1999," "When Doves Cry," "U Got the Look," "Diamonds and Pearls," "Nothing Compares 2 U" and many more -- along with the previously unreleased "Moonbeam Levels." That song, which has been available on bootlegs since the '80s and was even covered by Elvis Costello at a Prince tribute concert, was recorded in 1982 during the 1999 sessions and was considered for the unreleased 1989 album Rave Unto the Joy Fantastic (not to be confused with the similarly-named Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album released a decade later), several songs from which eventually appeared on the Batman and Graffiti Bridge soundtrack albums. (That preceding sentence should give an idea of the size and complexity of Prince's recorded work, which sprawls across four decades.) Nearly every other track on Prince 4Ever was released as a single at one time or another, apart from a few album cuts like "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and the 1981 B-side "Gotta Stop (Messin' About)." The package contains a 12-page booklet with previously unpublished photos by Herb Ritts.

Even more tantalizing is the remastered Purple Rain deluxe edition, slated for release early next year. While details are incomplete, the set will include "a second album of previously unreleased material," according the press release, which also notes that plans for the set "were agreed with Prince before he passed away." As for what that second album might include, multiple unreleased contemporaneous tracks -- such as "Electric Intercourse," "G-Spot," "Father's Song," "Wednesday," "All Day, All Night" and "Possessed" -- have appeared on bootlegs or were re-recorded with different Prince-related acts. Also, several full concerts from the Purple Rain era were professionally recorded, including a March 1985 show that was released on the now out-of-print home video Prince and the Revolution: Live. Also, B-sides from the era such as "17 Days" and two versions of "God" either appeared in the film or are commonly associated with the album.

tylerw, Friday, 21 October 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

There have been leaks of really cool 1984 studio shit lately, hopefully some of it is on there despite being a little late for purple rain (he was already on to the next thing)

It'll be great to hear Purple Rain remastered as I think the '80s CD of it sounds a bit flat (the vinyl version, of course, still rules) ... I just really hope they take care over it and not squash the life out of it.

want some a that concert footage pleeeease

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 October 2016 20:30 (seven years ago) link

3. Unreleased Studio stuff
4. The First Avenue Benefit show '83
5. The purple rain rehearsal soundboard previously circulated as 'Neon Rendezvous'
