i think this is 1 part substance 3 parts hilarious but worthwhile all the same all the same:
http://thebiglead.com/2016/10/18/declining-nfl-quality-of-play-has-been-a-talking-point-for-25-years/

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link

Problem is a lot of the star "future of the league" QB prospects have sorta fizzled out lately. Russell Wilson turned out fine, but his counterpart in Colin Kaepernick is a backup on an awful team. Luck hasn't been good in a couple years, RG3 is on his last legs (and out for the year), Cam is mired in an awful season, Bridgewater is out for the year, and older stars are either retiring, perpetually injured, suspended, or not playing at the same level (Rodgers). Like it's coming to the point where the big contracts are going to dudes like Brock Osweiler and Kirk Cousins; not where the NFL wants to be.

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 16:26 (seven years ago) link

in terms of quality of play, pretty much everything boils down to bad coaching and front office management. if you can't turn young talent into good nfl players you have bad coaching. if you have to play a lot of young players before they are ready you have bad cap management/talent retention. the same problems apply at every position but of course magnified at qb. imo there are two particularly damaging trends with qbs. first, there was a shift towards the end of the old cba where the model went from drafting a guy and sitting him a few years to having to get someone who can start immediately. when teams were playing pro bowl money to first round draft picks that was sort of defensible, but the paradigm hasn't switched back now. and second, and what makes the first worse, is that the fanbase over-emphasis on qbs is infecting actual football execs.

one thing that coaches often mention is the impact of recent limitations to off season training e.g. seen in poor o-line play early in the season. i'm sure that's true but it's also one of the few material things the nfl has done to address player health. if they want to mitigate the affect of that they need to look elsewhere, maybe cutting preseason games. definitely only goes to highlight how stupid the ideas of adding more regular season games or expanding the playoffs are. i hope this downturn in ratings and subsequent spotlight has come at the right time to put paid to that bullshit once and for all. and outside of quality of play, overexposure has got to be one of the main factors in falling ratings. meanwhile thursday night games are harming both of those.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 17:50 (seven years ago) link

saw a great tweet earlier on bears packers. all time regular season (190 games) bears lead by 3 points, 3,247-3,244.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 18:00 (seven years ago) link

I think when they met in the NFCCG they were 81-81 all time or something, that was pretty cool

anyway I agree on Thursday night games, either put them after byes or get rid of them.

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 October 2016 18:02 (seven years ago) link

It would make more sense to have a NFL game on a Friday night after high school football season ends.

earlnash, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:42 (seven years ago) link

yeah Friday/Saturday night games would be cool. I like Sunday as Football Day but it's kinda awkward if you like to throw parties and drink, cuz you're either getting hammered by 1 PM or worse, at night on a Sunday.

frogbs, Thursday, 20 October 2016 13:51 (seven years ago) link

exciting game

matt barkley is playing? good lord.

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 October 2016 02:21 (seven years ago) link

yeah this has been pretty desperate. bears defense looks decent, took green bay a lot of tries to get that td

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 21 October 2016 02:25 (seven years ago) link

rodgers with a crisp 4.7 YPA

call all destroyer, Friday, 21 October 2016 02:36 (seven years ago) link

I got to think this is probably the worse Green Bay/Bears rating game ever with the Cubs playing. I forgot it was tonight.

Betting on Brian Hoyer is a fools bet either way. Cutler is a goofball, but Hoyer has the touch of a a cinder block.

if the Bears weren't so inept that would've been a real frustrating game - got stopped at the 1/4th yard line on 4th down, Rodgers fumbled (again) and had it returned for a TD, Crosby missed an easy FG and an XP, but man oh man are the Bears awful right now

frogbs, Friday, 21 October 2016 13:23 (seven years ago) link

McAdoo is a piece of garbage, as is Josh Brown:

like, the moment anybody is accused of rape or domestic abuse, suddenly everybody becomes a private Columbo. Well, the facts have come out, and there's a 165 page case file on the guy who terrorized his wife and violated restraining orders, but by all means, stay by Josh Brown "in his trying time", lord knows he must be going through a lot right now.

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 October 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

i guess aj green is good

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 23 October 2016 18:25 (seven years ago) link

eagles and vikings came into the game with 3 turnovers combined for the season. they each have 3 now. and keeping with the number theme, 3 points total on offense so far.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 23 October 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

they each have three in this game, i mean

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 23 October 2016 18:29 (seven years ago) link

Browns on their 5th or 6th (I'll have to think about it) QB of the year. Somehow still in this game.

Landry Jones constantly had a look of a guy at a midterm exam that hadn't read anything for the class.

earlnash, Monday, 24 October 2016 00:04 (seven years ago) link

lol. his couple of throws on the td drive were v good but he could've had another pick or two outside of that. i know they got behind but having him throw 47 times when bell is there can't be correct.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/bears-blasted-in-viewership-by-cubs-on-thursday-night/

It's been a while since a baseball laid a ratings beat down on the NFL like last Thursday.

Even the good clubs look pretty f-ing sloppy these days.

earlnash, Monday, 24 October 2016 23:20 (seven years ago) link

That Arian's Gif and the Seahawks fan with a Heine are some classic ILNFL finds.

earlnash, Monday, 24 October 2016 23:21 (seven years ago) link

the NFL goes through a 1-2 year period where the juggernauts get redefined and teams struggle to assert themselves, kinda like the eyewall reforming on a hurricane. I wager we're on year 2 of that.

Neanderthal, Monday, 24 October 2016 23:22 (seven years ago) link

that said my team just gave me the most exciting win in a hot minute so I have happiness in myopia. Cards-Seahawks game put all of us to sleep last night
