ILM Artist Poll No. 80 · Iggy & The Stooges · Results Thread

Album results as predictable as expected, as everything up to '77 can be considered classic/canon. The song poll results will probably be more surprising, though I expect the majority will be from '69 - '77.

I placed The Idiot (#4) above Lust for Life (not in my top 5, though it's #6) because as an album it feels so coherent/singular in its scope it more strongly resonates with me, but I'm guessing the high profile songs on Lust for Life gave it the edge in this poll.

Kill City pic doesn't show up for me, and I'm guessing The Idiot got 12 rather than just 2 votes?

willem, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 08:39 (seven years ago) link

Ehat kill city image got deleted by my imgur that's weird.

It'd actually 10 votes for The Idiot. Also points for Lust for Life are 493 not 61. That's what happens when you copy paste in a hurry.

I might have voted for it if I'd had more time. It works really well in the context of some of the bootleg albums of the time. Kind of a proto GBV track, if they'd been more influenced by Iggy...

Lots of great Kill City tracks in the low end of the poll. I considered most of the above but while I love them I don't love them as much as the Stooges songs from 69 to 73 that punch me in the best way every time I hear them. "Sell Your Love" was the last one I dropped from my ballot.

willem, Tuesday, 11 October 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

Yeah voters left some great tracks in the lower end of the poll but hey it's a short poll so I think every track gets the attention it deserves.

I'm one of the two voters for "Sixteen". The space in the recording, the somehow very tangible guitar sound, it sounds fantastic. One of the highpoints in the set I saw him play on the Post Pop Depression tour.

"Tell Me A Story" is one of the best tracks on New Values, a great album opener. Super catchy guitar and I love the restrained/laidback vocals. The backing vocals always make me smile.

#1 here for "I'm Sick of You" (TOO LOW!, BTW). Easily the best manifestion of the 'Psychedelic' side of the Stooges, with plenty of snot and a brilliant Yardbirds rip during the fast part. One of Iggy's best vocals too.

I seriously underestimated New Values tracks myself been relistening in the context of Iggy's discography and it's actually a really cool album.

Am I the only one hearing a very open VU/Lou Reed influence on it? A track like Girls per example could easily come from his early albums.

Fuck you're a right it would be 13 more votes to I'm sick of you. You sent me the track as 'Sick of You' instead of 'I'm sick of You' and yours was an early ballot so it got separated from the other two in the spreadsheet. :/

That vote would send the track up around 4 places at 38 or 39 instead of 42. Mmm will correct in the final wrapup for now let's pretend we're cool cool cool

jeez Fall In Love With Me isn't in the top 50 Iggy tracks?? i'm shocked, that's a killer!

piscesx, Monday, 17 October 2016 01:52 (seven years ago) link

Yea i did mine in a rush and forgot about a couple because i didnt have time to think too much but also i felt like anything and most orders would be good - most of these are interchangably just stone cold great - i guess for me talking points are that Search and Destroy was so clearly the number one and yea- fall in love with me IS a killer - and good to see that KILL CITY seems to have taken hold as some of his best work. Is it just me or has the reputation of Raw Power steadily gained in currency in the last few years - for a while there it always seemed like Funhouse was universally everybodies number one but now it seems like the momentum is changing. Funny how time goes.

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Monday, 17 October 2016 06:36 (seven years ago) link

Back in the 70s I recall that Raw Power was rated well above Funhouse - thanks to the first two Stooges albums being out of print and very hard to find, Bowie's involvement, the iconic Mick Rock album cover, and Search and Destroy becoming by far his most covered song.

You can't overstate the importance of Bowie to Iggy's career. He was pretty much just a myth, if anything, to the record buying public back then, someone Creem or Rock Scene magazine talked about but no one else did, until Bowie got involved with him again in 76.

I feel like this is true of Lou Reed, too - the guy somehow managed to sustain a four decade career based on nothing but the good will of rock critics.

You got from "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" to "I Wanna Be Your Dog" in five years. That to me always seemed kind of a mind blower.

That remixed Kill City was new to me. I had the old CD and while you could tell the songs were interesting, they were so murky it was hard to take them more as than just raw demos. I'm sure modern DAW software they were really able to clean them up and get such a clear mix. There is definitely a good album there. It would be cool if the multi-tracks were available of Mission Burma's two Taang records of demos to get a remix like that.

Saw the Jarmusch last night. Liked most of it, although I would have been more interested in 20 minutes on The Idiot and Lust for Life than the reunion stuff, even though I understand that it's a Stooges film, not an Iggy film. The Ed Sanders and Warhol anecdotes were really funny.
