When you search for a file in Windows 7 and the location bar turns into a progress bar. That gets slower and slower as it moves to the right. And then, when you think it's done, it crosses the edge and moves into the (X) thing that stops the search.

When you search for a file in anything newer than Windows XP in general: all this shit where it refuses to search half your computer unless it has been indexed or whatever. FUCK OFF! At least XP just searched everything until it found your file.

Yes! And I don't even want to talk about how long it takes to INDEX a folder full of images. Every time I need to edit a bunch of stuff for work it takes like five minutes for the folder to update.

Windows follows its own version of Moore's law, it halves in speed every 18 months. My last win 10 update took 22 hours, was entirely rationally angry by the end of that.

Dog owners who pick up their dog's shit in a bag only to leave the bag on the sidewalk. What the fuck?

Can't believe we haven't sorted this out yet. Surely they understand that this is so much worse than leaving dog shit just anywhere right? Why does anyone ever do this? Why can't they see that they are not helping?!

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Sunday, 25 September 2016 09:21 (seven years ago) link

On the bike trail in my neighborhood I saw a guy do that - leave the bag, and I said something like "excuse me, you uh left this here," and he said "Yes, I'll pick it up on my way back," as if that made it perfectly okay. Different from leaving it there forever I guess, and I understand it's not pleasant to carry. But in the meantime there's a bag of shit sitting there; how are people supposed to know that it's only going to be there for 10 minutes?

parcels or even just envelopes done up tighter than a mummy in sellotape so that if you use scissors you always cut a bit off the things being sent and the only way in is a large sheet metal cutter plunged through the middle of the package, through the masking tape, through the cardboard, through the cushioning and (thud) right through the center of etc.

some of my noted either/or drivers are really old people who think they're driving an old car with a manual transmission and are driving with feet on both pedals. you can tell because the brake lights are on 99% of the time

this is not how manual cars work either

people should choose a speed to drive at and then employ cruise control whenever possible

thirty years since being bemused by cruise control jokes in American comic strip Bloom County and I have still never seen this feature in a motor vehicle

Shakey δσς (sic), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:17 (seven years ago) link

How come? I'm sure it works on the wrong side of the road just as good as the right side.

people should choose a speed to drive at and then employ cruise control whenever possible

Had an older relative who used to do this through town. Going around the curve by the laundromat at 40 MPH always a nail-biter.

pplains, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:21 (seven years ago) link

I assumed cruise control was just standard in all cars these days, but maybe only in the US. I'm not joking about using it whenever possible. A lot of drivers have a real problem with constantly speeding up and slowing down. Traffic would be smoother and driving would be more fuel efficient if we just let our cars maintain a constant speed.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:29 (seven years ago) link

my car doesn't have cruise control. idk why. i used to use it in my old car and had it had a noticeable effect on fuel economy.

A reminder that automatic transmission is still mostly an American (and Australian?) thing.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:35 (seven years ago) link

if you've been in any car manufactured in the last, I dunno, two decades for US use that has an automatic transmission and it wasn't the cheapest trim level imaginable, it has a cruise control

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:36 (seven years ago) link

btw well aware manual transmission vehicles don't involve using two pedals at the same time unless you're engaging the clutch, but old people are mysterious

I love cruise control. Keeps me from getting speed camera tickets in work zones.

how's life, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 13:44 (seven years ago) link

kudos to toyota on still having a really low trim level!

half the dealers won't even stock those because they're not really that much cheaper now? like the difference between installing cruise control/power windows/etc and switching the system to build such a low number of one-off cars without any options almost makes up for the extra feature cost in opportunity cost

Waiting forever for a book to get to me from the US in an Amazon marketplace purchase. Book I've wanted for ages, 2 weeks over the ETA.
Package arrived earlier. They sent the wrong book.

The new free wifi on the underground works really well, but sometimes the other free wifi jumps in - when this happens, it means that instead of the page I was about to load on my phone's browser, there is a login screen instead, and no way to retrieve what was there before. If it was an article that I was previously saving to read, that's it gone.

Truly, I have the hardest life.

I think that's pretty much the case. There are still a few models left. Almost makes me want to get a Ford Fiesta.

I hate some of the automatic features that come standard on cars. For example, the driver's side door jamb sensor went on the fritz, resulting in my dome light coming on every few moments and all my door locks locking and unlocking themselves. I was able to manually turn the dome light completely off until I got the sensor replaced, but I had to find some sort of ABACAB code out of the manual to deactivate the locks.

Same kind of thing, as I think I already mentioned, when I replaced the battery and then had to go online to find the code to turn my radio back on again.

pplains, Tuesday, 27 September 2016 16:52 (seven years ago) link

that's the point I knew I'd bought a luxury car -- the manual is huge and appears to have most of the cheat codes

my current car is teh first one I've had that has cruise control. I often use it when driving back from Tampa, or en route to Atlanta

other than that, very little opportunity to use it unless you like turning it off every 3 seconds..

I think Car Talk addressed the weird thing with older drivers who are going around with the brake lights always on as a combination of people with bad leg mobility (who probably shouldn't be driving) having a foot on each pedal and people who used to rest their left foot on the clutch who now leave it on the brake because... who even knows why

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 28 September 2016 15:42 (seven years ago) link

I can only attest to having driven behind these people on a maddening number of occasions, not to their reasons

Now that I'm sharing the roads with drivers as a scooterist(tm), I have like 1000 more IAs about driving than I used to. Thought about this thread today when someone in front of me braked every few seconds at nothing in particular...No problem! Just braking! WHILE GOING UPHILL. I was like, if you need to slow down, you know you can just stop accelerating, right? Yay gravity wins again!

In conclusion, people are the worst.
