Kill City benefited more from remastering than any other album I can think of. Maybe the 1990s Virgin Records reissue of Exile on Main St. And yeah, you're right, it sounds like a Stones album.

kill city yea some days i think this is my favourite thing of his at least after gorging on the stooges first three for so long it has got more play than them in last few years

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Saturday, 24 September 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

i guess also there have also been a few scattered singles which are not on iggy albums which i suppose are eligible

peanutbuttereverysingleday, Saturday, 24 September 2016 22:59 (seven years ago) link

I've been promoting the Kill City tracks for a bazillion years, and yes it is one of the best Stones Albums ever. Lucky Monkeys also worthy of mention. The official Kill City version goes a little longer than an earlier bootleg version, and this is being ultra picky, but the older version that fades during the outro is better. Trying to find a version on youtube...

dlp9001, Saturday, 24 September 2016 23:13 (seven years ago) link

Ok, yeah: this is the one I'd call the definitive version. My favorite Iggy related album period. Sequencing is amazing, and a bunch of the versions are better than any others that I've heard.

I guess the version of Kill City in spotify is the remasterized one? I'm digging back the iggy pop albums due to this poll but I can't get past this album, I''m floored at how good it is, I don't understand the naysayers. I know I'm wrong but right now it sounds even better than fun house or raw power. There's a certain charm to it, the lyrics are some of Iggy's best nut the whole thing has a very effortless and cynical 'fuck you' vibe. It's really addictive.

But not nut ha

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 25 September 2016 06:06 (seven years ago) link

I like basically everything from the original Stooges record up through Blah Blah Blah, then I get more discerning.

Always thought it was funny how the guitars on "Wild America" from American Caesar sound like Thurston & Lee, but neither of them are involved in any way.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 25 September 2016 06:32 (seven years ago) link

Ok, of the two versions on Spotify, the OOP version is better. I usually hate hair-splitting about releases, but the I Got A Right/Kill City tracks are some of the best songs by one of the best rock artists in the history of the medium, so it's worth making the effort. The Kill City remaster cleans things up too much, has a worse ending (the fade out for Lucky Monkeys on I Got A Right is still the best), etc. One of the really rare cases where seeking out a particular version of the album is worth the trouble. I'm still going with the Invasion/Revenge version, which isn't on youtube as best I can tell. Unfortunately that means spending $20+ on a used vinyl copy. It's worth it.

dlp9001, Monday, 26 September 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link

Only two ballots so far but they're wildly different. 30 different tracks have votes, which means they only agreed on 10 out of 40. I like how this is shaping up.

I agree with that. Obviously nothing wrong in providing an alternative version as long as you can choose, but "Now you can finally listen to how it was intended to sound all the time" is a wonky approach in general, especially when it's not just cleaning up but adding several gimmicks and restructuring like here.
The dude was basically in closed rehab and generally the worst period of his life at the time, if it shows in the raggedness (I'd say fierceness) of the album, then let it be.

There's a great live clip of "Five Foot One" (off the horribly produced but still fuckin awesome New Values) where Iggy clocks himself in the mouth with his mic and then does the interview afterwards smiling and bleeding. My #1 Iggy moment.

The Idiot and Lust For Life are essential albums and I recommend you listen to both in full. New Values has its moments - 'I'm Bored' in particular is a classic.

I won't be voting for anything beyond 1979.

and 'L.A. Blues' for the win.

Spinning New Values for the first time in memory. Still mostly fuckin awesome, but ... I wonder if Iggy, when the subject of "African Man" comes up, just grins sheepishly & says "cocaine's a hell of a drug."

Repo Man is so good. Also very fond of "Dog Food" and "Endless Sea" (both on regular albums) for their use on the soundtrack of Dogs In Space.

I'd forgotten that I had a very, very brief fling with the actress in this video (I didn't forget the fling, I forgot the video). I won't be voting for the song. I hope she got to actually meet Iggy, as it's hard to tell from the video.

that vid reminds me of seeing a song Iggy was working on when we were hanging out with him (ca. ~ 1984, when Bowie's "china girl" was in the charts). he was working on a tune that had working title "stars and stripes". i've always wondered if that ever turned into anything concrete.

Very slightly OT, but I've always been impressed by the way Momus stole the idea of the ending of "Here Comes Success" for this song. Good example of productive stealing.

Downloaded the non-remastered version of Kill City and now I understand why it got such bad reviews back then, Iggy's voice is buried and the whole thing sounds like crap.

I've never listened to it cuz thats what i always heard about it. Praise here is befuddling.

it's a good album!

new noise, Sunday, 9 October 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link

the remaster is a top 3 iggy album, the original is a bottom 3.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 9 October 2016 04:01 (seven years ago) link

Respectfully disagree. Original is a sludgy lo fi Stones Album (I think the sludgy lo-fi Stones Album "Exile" is considered one of their best). The remaster just sounds fake, vocals too forward, some bad edits, etc. I suppose it probably comes down to taste and what you heard first.

dlp9001, Sunday, 9 October 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

Also, looking at songs left off of the "official" version, Gimme Some Skin, Tight Pants, Sick of You all add a lot to the sequence, and the replacements don't really thrill me.
