Interesting results. It kind of seems to me they're more of a melding of different sensibilities than a coherent canon - like the champions of different camps left standing after the melee rather than consensus favorites. But maybe that's inevitable with a genre as splintered as metal. I can't argue with the #1 since I had the same placement on my ballot. That album hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks when I first heard it - life had primed me for a meditation on mortality at that moment. So far my favorite discoveries were some of the death metal in the lower reaches of the roll-out like Disma and Domains. Shame about the idiotic rantings of the Disma singer but I take some solace in the fact those opinions were expressed pre-band formation and at least according to the other members he's backed off from those views and they don't seem to be reflected in the lyrics, so maybe I wouldn't vote for him for city council, but I guess I can tolerate listening to him sing. It seems like I usually make most discoveries in the lower reaches of these polls, partly because there's more to choose from there, and partly I guess because I'm more likely to have encountered the higher rated stuff before and already formed an opinion on it.

That is precisely why I like the longer rollout which works for metal polls.

Wow, you weren't kidding about the death metal crew sitting this one out. I can see Lost Soul and Anata not making it, but I figured Dead Congregation would. And Nile for that matter, but they're like the 20th band I myself somehow forgot; Annihilation of the Wicked and Black Seeds of Vengeance would've been on my ballot if my brain had been working properly.

Even though I'm not into these particular two albums, I'm also surprised Enslaved's Ruun and Vertebrae didn't crack the results. I see them mentioned a lot in ilx.

My biggest surprise is that two other people voted for Glorior Belli's Manifesting the Raging Beast, no-show that it was. Love that album. It's a shame they turned into ... whatever they turned into.

Oh, just realized: no Behemoth. That's kind of odd.

Anyway here's my big dumb ballot, most of which is cozily tucked into the 400+ region of the results. There's probably a dozen or more entrants I'd swap out for stuff that slipped my mind, as well as many that I'd move around in the placement. That is probably true because there seems to be so much more death metal around than most of the other subgenres. It's much more established than BM or Doom really in the more mainstream market of metal.
I've seen so many people posting on the internet asking what doom metal is , so it's popularity on ilm is peculiar i think. But even then , it only takes 20 people to place something at #2.

If death metal fans such as phil etc aren't voting because they dont like me I'd happily let someone else takeover the EOY poll so they will participate.

Nokturnal Mortum made some good music, it's a shame they turned out to be a bunch of Nazis. This song always got me pumped up for the battles of life.

I preferred it when the far right made shit music. (musical) life was far easier.

Once the shock of the new wore off I realised I might have wanted to like him [Jute Gyte] more than I actually did...

Jute Gyte I appreciate for the out-there-ness, I guess I just wished he rocked more?

It's not really about the novelty for me. Although some of the initial draw was intellectual (the microtones, the asymmetric metres, the convoluted forms), the visceral impact is what keeps me listening. It can just feel diseased, eerie, and psychedelic in a unique and intense way. Even the weirdly airless production is part of this. I'll agree that it doesn't rock like Nachtmystium rock; more like the chained-in-the-attic bastard offspring of early Sonic Youth.

Having a listen to some of the albums that I missed, which includes the winner. It sounds quite a lot like the Sisters of Mercy, doesn't it. More challenging opinions as I have them.

I saw Shipping Is Discreet and Fast opening for Dimmu Borgir in '99. They were kind of bland, but their shipping was both discreet and fast.

It sounds quite a lot like the Sisters of Mercy, doesn't it.
