Voted for this, but think it's slightly overrated
― imago, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:04 (seven years ago) link
i really like this one
― nxd, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:04 (seven years ago) link
you used to rave about it
xp
― Cosmic Slop, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:04 (seven years ago) link
Actually, I cut it from my ballot at the last second haha
― imago, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:05 (seven years ago) link
Voted for both Sunn 0))) and Gorguts, so top 20 is most action I've seen this poll!
Monoliths was the only Sunn 0))) I voted for, and really, the only Sunn 0))) I ever want to hear. Overrated or not, it's easily the most distinctive and interesting for me, and am surprised they didn't continue in this style. More to do there IMO.
― Dominique, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:07 (seven years ago) link
Julian Priester's trombone on 'Alice' damn near makes me levitate.
― Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link
Well, yeah, Alice is amazing, and it's by far their most interesting work.
― imago, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:09 (seven years ago) link
Tbf, I did include Lateralus in the unranked part of my ballot. Just surprised to see it do this well. I checked: I included this Sunn O))) as well as Black One there too. Never been that passionate about them but they were interesting. (Yes, would OPO "Alice".)

(Those old diCrescenzo reviews were kind of dickish imo.)
― Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:11 (seven years ago) link
(Oh obv! Big part of the critical narrative. Tool can shrug that shit off, as the song Hooker With A Penis demonstrates ;) )
― imago, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:15 (seven years ago) link
Same here, kind of (OK just saw your correction, lol).
― Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:16 (seven years ago) link
If everyone who thought it's overrated had voted for it could have been even higher!
― cookware regression (Dinsdale), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link
Ha! I mean I like it but it's a record that sounded amazing on first listen and then just 'good' after a couple more plays.

the best USBM album and indeed the album that got me into black metal finally (lol fucking champs connection)
My #2 I think.

the vinyl sells for about $500 now.
A magnificent, wretched thing.

I love the Champs! Weakling was ok, but I didn't spend enough time with it to vote for. 15 minute songs are a tough sell in today's go-go world.
― Dominique, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:39 (seven years ago) link
some of us heard it when it came out :)

and bollocks to today's go-go world
― Cosmic Slop, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link
I don't know if I've heard this. I should probably check it out after all these raves (after I do my final listening for the notated music poll - which is really sticking it to the go-go world).

oh yeah i guess there needed to be another boris album. this one's fine
love weakling
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link
Only my #30 though. I had Flood at #9
Clearly I'm at odds with ILM on Boris as per usual
― Cosmic Slop, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:47 (seven years ago) link
I have one Fucking Champs album. I've basically never listened to it since I heard Scale the Summit.
xps
― Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:48 (seven years ago) link
I always wonder how much the Champs had to do w/indie appreciation of metal. I remember at the time reading all this hand-wringing kind of stuff about authenticity, and hipsters, and not really getting what the big deal was. Either you like riffs or you don't, thought I, in my bubble.
― Dominique, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link
Hand-wringing aside, I more or less concluded that there were a bunch of heavy progressive bands doing similar things with much better chops.
― Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Friday, 16 September 2016 14:54 (seven years ago) link
they didn't have tim greene though
― Cosmic Slop, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:55 (seven years ago) link
I still remember all the Tim Greene fanboys down the front at the 13th Note when I saw The Fucking Champs (Touring with Trans AM). It was like the second coming for them.
― Cosmic Slop, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:56 (seven years ago) link
I've never even heard The Fucking Champs but I do remember one of their albums, IV I think, getting talked up a lot by some of the writers in Metal Maniacs that I tended to pay more attn to, like (iirc) Jeff Wagner, Chris Black, and Marty Rytkonen.
― Devilock, Friday, 16 September 2016 14:57 (seven years ago) link
Dont think they were ever written about in the UK press

After listening to praise for a long time I thought I'd like Gin more than I did. I feel like it has some kind of importance in the grand scheme of things even if it hasn't kept my attention.
