John Haughm trademarked the band name without telling anyone else in the band.

It's rare that you get to spend an afternoon with one of your favorite musicians. Much less one who had such a foundational influence on how you view the world. Yet, that was exactly what I had the chance to do with the legendary Don Anderson of Agalloch, Sculptured, and now Khorada. Over the course of a five hour hangout, where we talked about everything from our favorite local beers to the European educational system I had a chance to see into what has always made this band such a vital part of the metal scene. Don Anderson is a metalheads intellectual, a young professor on his way to tenure who happens to tour the world between semesters. What more could you want?

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:05 (seven years ago) link

lol he is such an ilxor

This album (Agalloch) was decent enough iirc. Black Lake Nidstang has a nice electro breakdown. They're fundamentally a bit dull while being quite good. I'm at peace with them ruling the top 30 :P

imago, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

Less at peace with this lot, ironically as they're so peaceful themselves!!!!

imago, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:13 (seven years ago) link

I meant Don Anderson himself btw

imago, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:13 (seven years ago) link

the Le Secret EP was full on black metal

Le Secret is what I always wanted 'blackgaze' to be and what it so rarely turned out to be.

I'm listening to that other Alcest album with the green cover and oh wow, why don't I know this? This is everything I like!

I figured Carcass for a #1 contender. Maybe it's in that awkward stage where the hype is too recent.

jmm, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:33 (seven years ago) link

This ^^^^^^ is what I want for my blackgaze. Dulcimer delectation!

I've never got on with Alcest and the more, well, overtly emotional black metal stuff. I prefer the emotion to be buried, or anterior, almost incidental - not so proscriptive. I don't know.
Plus it reminds me of seeing Anathema and My Dying Bride back in the early 90s. Yes, I am old.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:47 (seven years ago) link

Anathema and My Dying Bride were terrible though

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:47 (seven years ago) link

I still quite like Serenades, but yeah.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:51 (seven years ago) link

Anathema and My Dying Bride were terrible though

this is 100 percent untrue

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:51 (seven years ago) link

I am one of those annoying people who disregarded Ghost for years then finally got into them bigtime in the last few months. None of their albums made my ballot but Meliora has some amazing songs on it. Sometimes they remind me of Club Ninja era BOC.

(and the YT clip of them performing 3 songs at Amoeba is one of my favorite things ever)

I think their new EP is gonna have a Eurythmics cover (assuming that's what "Missionary Man" is).

Devilock, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:52 (seven years ago) link

Re: Brad. Oh god, we still have a few albums from them, don't we?

Exhibit A in the argument of imago and Brad being the same.

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

I am not interested in non-Japanese Ghost in the slightest, but am amused that a band can build a huge following by copping late BOC

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

i doubt anathema or mdb will place at all? were they even nominated?

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:55 (seven years ago) link

anyway serenades and silent enigma are incredible gothy doom albums, beyond me why y'all don't fuck with them

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

I am one of those annoying people who think Ghost are irredeemable fucking garbage

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

totally indifferent to ghost, wish i liked them

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 September 2016 18:57 (seven years ago) link

I'm not a fan either.
