I haven't listened to this Agalloch album for ages... I'm not alone in thinking it was a lot weaker than the previous.

Not that they were consistently brilliant anyway

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:12 (seven years ago) link

but they were

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

I don't know. They're decent. But they don't have that bit of devil in them, that ingenuity or savagery I need. They're a bit...soft. Not Unlike The Waves is a jam, as I'm sure we'll all discover when its parent album finishes top 5

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

xp I guess we disagree on that. They had their moments certainly but to me it wasn't all gold.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

Pantheist is kind of lovely though!

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it's a bit overwrought in places but likeable.

Oh now this is a good album

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:22 (seven years ago) link

I don't actually have this one

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:22 (seven years ago) link

It's second best Neurosis IMO - try From The Hill

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

Nicely put. I like moments of Agalloch but this is my overall feeling these days too.

Sadly not on Spotify or youtube or bandcamp etc

Cut this from my ballot late on. It has a couple of lovely tracks but the whole thing doesn't really work for me. Far too many saccharine interludes as well

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 19:59 (seven years ago) link

*rants*

Drugs A. Money, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:01 (seven years ago) link

This should be at #300 or something.

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link

I didn't like the production on M as much as the EP, but it's still beautiful. I equally enjoy its engagements with full MBV shoegaze (Dybt I Skoven) to lovely dark folk (Skøgen Skulle Dø). It might not be the most accomplished release from today's rollout, but I think it's a sweet debut and it successfully captures the forest mood.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link

I wanted Myrkur to be Darkthrone and it wasn't so that's my bad. I'll revisit it soon.

That's a beltingly good record.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:13 (seven years ago) link

xpost DHG was my number 8. I haven't figured out yet why I love it so much. It was a slow burner for me-- I listened to it and found it so weird that I had to hear it again, and then realized I'd listened to it four or five times in a week. I love the vocals, but I can 100% understand why someone might not.

Tom Violence, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:13 (seven years ago) link

I found this garbage-y troll thru the malfunctioning algorithms of Youtube (h*pst*r bl*ck m*t*l) and his account is mostly worthless--surprise!--but I got a kick out of his "worst black metal albums of 2016" video because there was a bunch of stuff on there (Ygg Huur, A Northern Meadow, to some extent VALIS) that had intrigued me somewhat but that I could nit really get into before. After watching his vid, though, I actually got really eager to give those albums another listen. Like, that dude's scorn actually created a context for me to start appreciating those albums more fully.

Anyways, I bring this up now, bcz M made #2 on his list. Dude has some real hatred for Myrkur. It's really crazy how unhappy black-metal elitists seem to be about the direction in which their chosen genre is going.

Drugs A. Money, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

Also, I only kinda like M. I feel like maybe she more substantial records ahead of her...?

Drugs A. Money, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link

xpost I like the fact that Primordial are from Skerries in the Gaeltacht (irish speaking part of the west of ireland). Would be cool if they sang (or growled) in Gaelic.

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link

Something must be wrong with the numbers again, this should be #1

Another album I only kind of like

Drugs A. Money, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link

The album before it is probably their best but this is great too, dont think I voted for it though

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:29 (seven years ago) link

15 year old me made me put this fairly high up the ballot

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:31 (seven years ago) link

TS: the last AtDI vs the first TMV

Tom Violence, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:32 (seven years ago) link

Oh and I can only echo what other people here are saying about Myrkur, she shows promise but M is good in parts but underdeveloped.

My #10. It's the Abyss, folks

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:39 (seven years ago) link

And for heaven's sake, listen to Dark 3.12

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link

I haven't listened to Darkspace much but I remember wondering if it was great or if there was actually almost nothing going on. I'll give Dark 3.12 a chance though.

Tom Violence, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:42 (seven years ago) link

Next one is also a former ILM AOY metal poll winner

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link

All these Darkspace albums up here, with Years Past Matter languishing in the lower reaches. For shaaaaaame, ILM.

ILM seems to prefer Jute Gyte to Krallice and Darkspace

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:52 (seven years ago) link

Im not sure there's anymore previous EOY poll winners to come which would be weird.

Wonder why they have all only just made the top 100?

People be fickle?

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:52 (seven years ago) link

The more Mick Barr I hear, the more I think Krallice is his least interesting project.

Tom Violence, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

hahaha there's a lot of mick barr out there

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:54 (seven years ago) link

Not really a fan of Converge (or metalcore in general) but I liked this (didn't quite make my ballot though).

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 20:56 (seven years ago) link

Dark Space III did though.
