this was good without being mindblowing, but could certainly stand to be heard again

I found it pretty mindblowing
― Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:24 (seven years ago) link
Whoever it's #1 voter was obviously did too!

My expectations were probably too high after III
― imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:29 (seven years ago) link
Go listen now then, it may just be that you were too familiar with III and haven't done so with III I
― Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:31 (seven years ago) link
I thought this actually was III at first. It's going to get complicated when they get up to Dark Space IIIIIIIIII
― Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:34 (seven years ago) link
I have not previously been a Darkspace fan, but am going to try this again now with an open mind.

They're magnificent in their sustained fury, but I do find a little Dark Space goes a long way. Which is to say I don't think I ever made it this far! Will check it out later.

The concentrated mercury of Darkspace... Listening to this now, having heard a lot of other black metal in quick succession, it seems very distinctive. I like it a lot more. It sounds like standing at the centre of a waterfall (in space).
― tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:58 (seven years ago) link
This is sounding much better than I remember! Probably dismissed it very quickly because it didn't have Dark 3.12 on it haha

This is my number one and I'm not even a Rush fan (maybe a bit).
It is genuinely mad and infectiously brilliant and full of crazy time signatures. They manage to be literary without taking themselves too seriously and have knitted a Lovecraftian space reality that feels complete and terrifying. Also huge nostalgia.

It's not on this album but has anyone heard their cover of Songs: Ohia?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_38_5ERLkU
― Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:22 (seven years ago) link
I liked that first Mars Volta album at the time but the second one just killed my enjoyment of the band. I get why people like them (I think) but it leaves me totally cold. I do quite like Rush and love Tool for what it's worth (think I had Lateralus in my top 10, hoping that places high).
Also I realised we've not had any Agalloch albums place yet, I'm guessing at least three of those will show up?

at times i think it's better than monotheist
shit's starting to get real
― cookware regression (Dinsdale), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 13:10 (seven years ago) link
It's more a continuation of Monotheist as it pretty obviously would have been the next Celtic Frost album if they hadn't split.

The 40 Watt Sun singer sounds a lot like the guy from The Decemberists.
― tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 13:23 (seven years ago) link
It's hugely emotional. It would not be out of place on the My So-Called Life soundtrack, not that that's a bad thing
