They're just very pop, very 'epic'. There's not much dissonant or thorny here. But I love it!

Think I heard this. It's pretty sick

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 10:59 (seven years ago) link

My fave track is the 3rd one The Great Unifier , you should check it out imago if you havent

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:03 (seven years ago) link

This has to be one of the best EP debuts ever.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:05 (seven years ago) link

When their album drops almost everyone is going to say it's not as great as the EP , aren't they? Such a tough release to follow. Soma EP just wasn't as good.

I think I found this linked from Neil Kulkarni's blog when I read it one time, and I remember being very impressed.

yup , Neil is a big fan

Listened to my CD of this earlier and it really is a masterpiece

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:20 (seven years ago) link

this was good without being mindblowing, but could certainly stand to be heard again

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:23 (seven years ago) link

I found it pretty mindblowing

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:24 (seven years ago) link

Whoever it's #1 voter was obviously did too!

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:25 (seven years ago) link

My expectations were probably too high after III

imago, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:29 (seven years ago) link

Go listen now then, it may just be that you were too familiar with III and haven't done so with III I

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:31 (seven years ago) link

I thought this actually was III at first. It's going to get complicated when they get up to Dark Space IIIIIIIIII

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:34 (seven years ago) link

I have not previously been a Darkspace fan, but am going to try this again now with an open mind.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:44 (seven years ago) link

They're magnificent in their sustained fury, but I do find a little Dark Space goes a long way. Which is to say I don't think I ever made it this far! Will check it out later.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:48 (seven years ago) link

The concentrated mercury of Darkspace... Listening to this now, having heard a lot of other black metal in quick succession, it seems very distinctive. I like it a lot more. It sounds like standing at the centre of a waterfall (in space).

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 11:58 (seven years ago) link

This is sounding much better than I remember! Probably dismissed it very quickly because it didn't have Dark 3.12 on it haha

toooooooo hiiiiiiiiiiigggggghhhhh

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:09 (seven years ago) link

This is my number one and I'm not even a Rush fan (maybe a bit).

It is genuinely mad and infectiously brilliant and full of crazy time signatures. They manage to be literary without taking themselves too seriously and have knitted a Lovecraftian space reality that feels complete and terrifying. Also huge nostalgia.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:10 (seven years ago) link

Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt should be sung at volume on a daily basis

There are just no weak tracks. An hour and seven minutes could never seem shorter!

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:22 (seven years ago) link

I liked that first Mars Volta album at the time but the second one just killed my enjoyment of the band. I get why people like them (I think) but it leaves me totally cold. I do quite like Rush and love Tool for what it's worth (think I had Lateralus in my top 10, hoping that places high).

Also I realised we've not had any Agalloch albums place yet, I'm guessing at least three of those will show up?

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 12:28 (seven years ago) link

oh god

shit's starting to get real

cookware regression (Dinsdale), Wednesday, 14 September 2016 13:10 (seven years ago) link

It's more a continuation of Monotheist as it pretty obviously would have been the next Celtic Frost album if they hadn't split.

It's going to be all screamo and metalcore from here on.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 13:20 (seven years ago) link

The 40 Watt Sun singer sounds a lot like the guy from The Decemberists.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 14 September 2016 13:23 (seven years ago) link

It's hugely emotional. It would not be out of place on the My So-Called Life soundtrack, not that that's a bad thing
