Vast Chains was my #1, Thantifaxath my #9.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 01:55 (seven years ago) link

Thantifaxath was in my top 10 -- very cool sound. I think they actually split for a short time last year? Hope not for good, because also looking fwd to what they do next. They're "black metal" in a superficial way to me -- a lot of these riffs could easily show up in death metal (of the Stargazer school), or even prog(metal). And like the Australian band, I love how Thantifaxath seems more concerned with perfecting their own style rather than adhering to an existing one.

Dominique, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 01:59 (seven years ago) link

Just reminding myself exactly how good this Thantifaxath is. It's amazing and sort of musically (if not thematically) uplifting. Definitely a unique sound.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 07:25 (seven years ago) link

Thantiaxath was my #30, really cool record. Quite a few things from this last stretch on my ballot. Have never really got on with Harvey Milk though.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 07:30 (seven years ago) link

Catching up now, I'd love to post more but my evenings are too busy atm.

Re: Esoteric
Siegbran did you vote for this?
― Cosmic Slop

I voted for The Maniacal Vale.

Just put on the closing track of the Nokturnal Mortum as I forgot to listen to it earlier. tt reckons it sounds like Last Christmas by Wham
― imago

It also sounds suspiciously like that Ewoks celebration song at the end of Star Wars 6.

Lots of really good stuff, happy to see Agrypnie, Fen, Angelic Process etc, all great but didn't make my top 100. The placement Sons Of Northern Darkness feels low indeed, for such a high-profile, universally acclaimed record. Arckanum was #4 on my list, it's a phenomenally fun and riff-tastic thrash/black metal album. That's another one of those one-off surprises where a band suddenly hits it straight out the park mid-career.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 09:26 (seven years ago) link

livid that that only-ok christian mistress demo places so high

like that's not even the best record they've released in the past fifteen years

Between the Dead is completely beautiful! It's like a noisier Jesu, but just as pupil-dilatingly ineffable. Maybe my favourite find of the roll-out so far.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 10:09 (seven years ago) link

Maybe Definitely my favourite find of the roll-out so far.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 10:16 (seven years ago) link

Listening now. It's loud.

Altar Of Plagues didn't QUITE get me how I'd hoped, based on the first two tracks, but I might well return to it.

imago, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 10:44 (seven years ago) link

'seed' is killer

imago, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 10:51 (seven years ago) link

yeah the Goslings album is great, was thrown off by the 9-minute opening track being kind of dull, but since then it's been pretty riveting

imago, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:05 (seven years ago) link

I'm glad you came around to it!

This Arckanum is nice and dynamic. The vocals are very cute.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:10 (seven years ago) link

I like the track where it just sounds like the dude muttering to himself in a cave

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:14 (seven years ago) link

fyi Sund4r Vast Chains was my #11 and Sacred White Noise my #21, but both could have been higher

listening to Sacred White Noise again now so I can appreciate the tracks that aren't Gasping In Darkness and Panic Becomes Despair again. fuck it's so good

imago, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:24 (seven years ago) link

xp I look forward to it!

Oh I see that Þ means 'th'. Is the album called this because he has a lisp and actually it is his way of indicating a hissing? Maybe it's the sound that the guy on the front makes. I don't mean to be offensive - I have a slight lisp myself.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:28 (seven years ago) link

More probably it is the rune 'thurisaz'!

Key Concepts: Unconscious forces, sociological forces, Thor, Loki as giant, chaos, destruction by natural forces, complexities of aggression, conflicts, disputes, psychological problems, lightning, breakthrough, aggressive male sexuality, battering down barriers, thorn of awakening, trouble, enthusiasm

That sounds about right. Anyway, it's a great album.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 11:31 (seven years ago) link

It's probably because it's Þerrific and Þensational.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 12:18 (seven years ago) link

This Agrypnie is nice and blackgazey. Very excited for the continuation of the rollout!

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link

i too am excited

Poll is back! Though of course, your health is most important. Hope you feel better soon.

Looking forward to this. That other Absu album you made me listen to was brilliant.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 16:40 (seven years ago) link

Dude, don't even stress yourself. We have almost 200 albums to entertain ourselves with in the meantime.

Also Absu rules. No one drums like Proscriptor, especially on Tara.

Here's his Slayer audition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaHhvefoneo

Yeah, OTM. I'm barely keeping up as is.

Cultes des Ghoules Henbane if you want to watch decay in real time.

Mgla Exercises in Futility if you just want to feel above it all.

Devilock, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 16:59 (seven years ago) link

I'd go with Motörhead - Inferno.

jmm, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 17:00 (seven years ago) link

I don't often say this with black metal -- who does -- but read Mgla's lyrics. They're Ligotti, Schopenhauer, Cioran, and your own viscera rolled into one.

I'll definitely read Mgla's misanthropic lyrics later. Will revisit CDG too. Abzu is great.

I think I missed immolation in the nominations spreadsheet bc that should've been in my top five and I totally didn't vote for it :(

There's got to be more Electric Wizard and Mastodon coming. Trying to think of some ILM favourites who haven't had anything place yet. Isis?
