I don't know anyone who knows anything about the bronx though, which i took to mean it is not worth investigating.

caek, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

seriously tho, pasadena is pretty nice but new york beats it hands down even if ur more crunched for $$--if you were actually living in LA it might be a little difft but my experience was that it was far enough away from cool shit that it wasnt really worth it--nightlife sucks, too... you wouldnt necessarily need a car depending on how bike-y you are, plus the gold line goes right through old town. i think tremendoid lives in pas actually you might ask him.

but if it were me id go for nyc.

dont live in sobro

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:31 (fifteen years ago) link

it is not worth investigating because you can get somewhere affordable and nice that is much closer and because it is fairly residential, or at least free of destination culture/nightlife. it's the latter reason, plus the historic legacy of poverty and crime (which have been reduced significantly) in some parts of the bronx that captured national attention 2-3 decades ago that have prompted few of the young white people from the hinterlands who have thronged nyc in the last 10-15 years to move there. there are some very nice parts of the bronx that are a reasonable commute, but they are devoid of youth culture.

yes, Mr. Williams of East Williamsburg, NY and Bumfuck, RI.

I might have more in common with someone new to the city on a limited income than a rich, evil Manhattan jew.

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:36 (fifteen years ago) link

yah, i have a lot of colleagues at caltech and have visited. pasadena itself seems fine, but I might live somewhere more "LA". but yes, nyc is the tops. i think the only place i'd take over it right now is sf (please don't kill me).

i cycle daily in oxford but it's many levels below cycling in london, which is probably a notch or two below LA or NYC in intensity. i should ask ed about this if/when i know where i'm going. it's far from a deal-breaker though.

all i know about the bronx is kubrick. how long does it take to get from there to say, the village? an hour?

caek, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I know nothing about the Bronx but I'd say try Washington Heights off the A train. My lady friend manages to get downtown quickly and regularly.

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Kubrick grew up in a very different era. it could be an hour from the more urban part of the bronx (which has some nice old apt bldgs) to the village. from leafier parts, it's probably more than that. in the abstract, i think more people should live in the bronx, but i wouldn't advise you to do so unless you'd really like to live in a quasi-garden suburb (and even then it might not be the best choice).

gabbneb, Monday, 29 September 2008 16:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Thank god for the A, when it's running express. Unfort it runs local after 11pm and frequently on weekends for service.

I was at 190th yesterday. :/

runs local after 10:30 i think :(

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

but its a dope train nonetheless, gets me from bed-stuy to downtown in like 17 minutes

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Monday, 29 September 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I have def seen the A be express after 11pm but I think it has to do with when the train departs from its station of origin (or some other important point along the way) rather than happening to all trains at the witching hour. Would like to know where the tipping point is for that, very much.

Yeah, thank gott for it yesterday, I was running late and the A took good care of me.

i spose so, i just never seem to be able to find express trains after 10--tho sometimes if im lucky for some bizarre reason itll run express btw hoyt and utica which is perfect for me

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Monday, 29 September 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Washington Heights is a good place to look, but definitely a second choice after anywhere on the West Side between ~125th and 59th Streets (not that you'll find much that's cheap too far below 96th) and West of Central Park/Morningside Park (but consider ~Central Park North as far East as Lenox Ave?), with the possible exception of Amsterdam or further East between 100 and 104.

also, caek, ignore all this talk of the A train - you would take the 1/9 to Columbia

ignore the a train at ur own peril it is an ancient source of power in new york

The important thing re neighborhoods is to make a list of places people rec and then GO THERE. Because I would pay more and endure a commute on the 4/5 to live in Prospect Heights if I found an apt I loved there. But that won't wash for everyone, esp if you have already sold your soul to Morningside Heights or whatev.

thanks guys.

laurel otm re the importance of getting boots on the ground. hopefully I will be passing through in January again, at which time I will tour the city of new york.

caek, Monday, 29 September 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

um i accidentally pulled a first interview for job in new york (i applied thinking oh they won't call me anyway i'm no good) but now i don't want them to hire me because then i have to debate whether i want to move to new york and i really don't want to be one of YOU PEOPLE. also i will probably be making . . . like 47k (if i get hired, which is unlikely). so i better act like a tard in the interview so i can avoid this serious dilemma. i can do that without even trying!

do you want to hang out?

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:07 (fifteen years ago) link

the interview is in dc

lil yawne (harbl), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

what's the job?

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:12 (fifteen years ago) link

bronx public defender!!!!!!!!!

lil yawne (harbl), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:12 (fifteen years ago) link

but i really might prefer to go somewhere smaller and cheaper so i'm not going to cry if they don't like me, i guess that's good

lil yawne (harbl), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

that's way cool tho good luck

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:28 (fifteen years ago) link

i say this every time, but jersey city is affordable and about the same in commute time as Queens. $1250 to $1300 gets you a decent, roomy one bedroom by yerself; 1100 to 1000 would be a reasonable share and you could probably go lower and rough it.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i know what you mean but above $1000 sounds insane to me because i live in ohio (lol) and i could rent two apartments for that! but ohio is zzzz anyway. i'll see what happens. may not even have to think about this 2+ weeks from now!

lil yawne (harbl), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 22:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Well you won't have to maintain a car you know

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

unless you are a superstar dj/foodie and live in queens

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't maintain a car now either though

i hate foodies

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Right, but other jobs may require you to live in the lolburbs

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:38 (fifteen years ago) link

? i am applying to jobs in several other cities that are not new york, not any in suburbs

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Any neighborhood that was sold as "up and coming" last year is probably not a place you want to move right now.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh careful w/ public offices. my friend was interviewing w/ queens d.a. office for several months and then they were like 'oh yeah, btw, we don't actually have budget approval to hire anyone right now! lolz!'

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 04:49 (fifteen years ago) link

like anyone does

gabbneb, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 04:59 (fifteen years ago) link

this was before things got really crazy economically. i mean, they were bad, but not as bad as now. also, why waste time/resources with 3 or 4 interviews if you can't do anything about it?

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 05:30 (fifteen years ago) link

It's good to be a foodie in NYC; it's real pig in shit territory.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 06:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i know about the public offices having no money thing

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 10:17 (fifteen years ago) link

$1300 to live alone is beyond unreasonable to me, if my rent went above $1000 it would be like 50% of my take-home. But on $47,000 you could probably do it. Also fuck you to whomever thinks anything below $1000 for a share is "roughing it". What??

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah seriously. my rent just went up another $50 and i'm still WELL below $1000 for a share with awesome roommates and a backyard.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I like how $47,000 has become the canonical salary on this thread.

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, lol exchange rate. If it keeps going like this even the low Columbia salary will allow me to eat into GBP student loan.

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:42 (fifteen years ago) link

i would just be sad because maybe in other states i would have that much money left AFTER paying rent because the pay would be higher and the rent would be far lower but, again, this could all be purely hypothetical. i'm also allergic to roommates! also xpost i think it's more like $48,500 or something but whatever

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:43 (fifteen years ago) link

$47k has become the cannonical salary because that's what you and harbl said you'd probably make. You started it.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:46 (fifteen years ago) link

I know! I like that it has become the canonical salary!

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Also fuck you to whomever thinks anything below i000 for a share is "roughing it".

I've seen seven hundred dollar a month apartments in Jersey City that involve sharing one bathroom with four people along with a bedroom that's twelve by twelve with a window facing a wall. And much worse in New York. I'm not saying that's the only option, but it takes work to find something comfortable for under a grand a month in the outlying NY area and A LOT of work or luck to find something liveable, comfortable and solo for under a grand a month. You've got to sacrifice something: privacy, light, six floor walk up, location...

47K is like 14 euros now, right?

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:48 (fifteen years ago) link

47 000 U.S. dollars = 26 449.0715 British pounds
