Prince RIP

There were other tunes from the late 80s that also used the Camille gimmick and would've fit that album: "Scarlet Pussy", "Partyman", etc. And the ur example of that style is of course "Erotic City". For some reason the chipmunk voice seems to have brought out the most funky side of late 80s Prince. Too bad he gave that up when he tried to form a tougher image with the New Power Generation. (Though arguably "Prettyman" from Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic is a continuation of that style, even though his voice is less chipmunky on it.)

And "Cloreen Baconskin" of course. And maybe at a stretch "Bob George".
I still remember the total WTF of the first Camille track I heard on SOTT.

I was reading about the First Avenue show, and I briefly thought, huh, I wonder what Prince thinks of this, and then I got sad.

For whatever reason, there have been quite a few nice leaks of unreleased tracks the past week or so. All of them in mono for some reason even though they presumably derive from stereo, but other than that in really good sound quality.

man, that was a serious undertaking, but a fun night. 30 songs. haven't been able to find video of any of the funk tracks, presumably because people were dancing.

Yeah, the SOTT reissue has been pushed back a couple of times now. Plus, the last I checked, the others (Lovesexy through Come) now have a Feb '17 release date.

Are these reissues remastered??

One assumes so... the remasters done for HDTracks (which are I think the same ones the vinyl is using?) only made it up to parade

prince should not be dead. with bowie, it's like ok, he was gone for a while, i really thought the next day and the museum exhibitions were actually posthumous efforts, and then blackstar comes out and i'm like alright he's back and then two days later he dies - it's all of a piece. what a brilliant way to go out. prince was just... unnecessary. this is not allowed. wtf. looking at that magnificent urn i'm just struck by the utter pointlessness of his accidental/preventable death... there's nothing poetic or sexy or cool or artistic about it... fuck

I saw Hannibal Buress last week and he told a story about seeing "the late great Prince" and it hit me then. he was like "it was the best performance I've ever seen, but this was Prince, so you know some weird shit was gonna happen.....he did 7 encores."

It's kind of like for awhile my mind was taking this as just another prince stage -- he changed his name then changed it back, stopped performing dirty stuff then reversed that, died... and that's permanent???? Are you sure? :(

Yeah, it still seems really odd to me, to think that Prince is no longer with us, but I think the same with Bowie. With Prince, though, there's still a little bit of a feeling of "wait, this wasn't the way it was supposed to be" ...

If anything, I just hope that all of that music ends up in the hands of someone that knows what to do with it all. If there must be posthumous releases, I hope they don't end up being cheap, tacky, shoddily put together etc. and for fucks sake, don't fucking radically remix or add overdubs like some idiot did once to the posthumous Hendrix stuff.

I don't think that will happen. There's kind of a cabal of Prince guardians who all have their heads in straight. I feel like there'd be MORE chance of that kind of 'aesthetic mismanagement' if he had left a will and some weird relative was in sole control of the estate.

Susan Rogers should crowdfund a bid. I'd contribute.

'Controversy' (the title track) is one of the best things he ever did.

Why does nobody talk about Prince? Sure, it's not as "individual" as what came later, but it's leagues ahead of For You and the first two tracks on the LP (not to mention 'I Feel For You') are up there with some of his all-time best. It sounds fucking great, too.

it does sound remarkably good compared to his later records. a lot more body to the lows and mids. the imperial phase records have that signature thin/airy sound

'Bambi' fucking smokes too, even if Prince's voice on the chorus weirdly reminds me of Justin Hawkins from The Darkness.
