There were other tunes from the late 80s that also used the Camille gimmick and would've fit that album: "Scarlet Pussy", "Partyman", etc. And the ur example of that style is of course "Erotic City". For some reason the chipmunk voice seems to have brought out the most funky side of late 80s Prince. Too bad he gave that up when he tried to form a tougher image with the New Power Generation. (Though arguably "Prettyman" from Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic is a continuation of that style, even though his voice is less chipmunky on it.)

And "Cloreen Baconskin" of course. And maybe at a stretch "Bob George".
I still remember the total WTF of the first Camille track I heard on SOTT.

I was reading about the First Avenue show, and I briefly thought, huh, I wonder what Prince thinks of this, and then I got sad.

xpost It's crazy but perfect that he left no will yet left instructions on how to turn Paisley Park into a museum.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 September 2016 01:54 (seven years ago) link

For whatever reason, there have been quite a few nice leaks of unreleased tracks the past week or so. All of them in mono for some reason even though they presumably derive from stereo, but other than that in really good sound quality.

I wish you could see my home. It's... it's so... exciting (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 22 September 2016 03:10 (seven years ago) link

man, that was a serious undertaking, but a fun night. 30 songs. haven't been able to find video of any of the funk tracks, presumably because people were dancing.

two weeks pass...

whatever happened to that Sign 'o' the Times vinyl reissue?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

coming 10/21 w/ more reissues to follow in december, i believe

dc, Wednesday, 12 October 2016 21:56 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, the SOTT reissue has been pushed back a couple of times now. Plus, the last I checked, the others (Lovesexy through Come) now have a Feb '17 release date.

Are these reissues remastered??

van smack, Thursday, 13 October 2016 00:17 (seven years ago) link

One assumes so... the remasters done for HDTracks (which are I think the same ones the vinyl is using?) only made it up to parade

MatthewK, Thursday, 13 October 2016 05:08 (seven years ago) link

prince should not be dead. with bowie, it's like ok, he was gone for a while, i really thought the next day and the museum exhibitions were actually posthumous efforts, and then blackstar comes out and i'm like alright he's back and then two days later he dies - it's all of a piece. what a brilliant way to go out. prince was just... unnecessary. this is not allowed. wtf. looking at that magnificent urn i'm just struck by the utter pointlessness of his accidental/preventable death... there's nothing poetic or sexy or cool or artistic about it... fuck

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

yeah I feel hit much harder by Prince tbh. I'm still not over it.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:02 (seven years ago) link

he was writing a memoir! he was still recording and performing like a madman! i fucking saw him a year ago! fuck fentanyl

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:06 (seven years ago) link

Not over it either. As months and months pass ill periodically be like wait what the fuck, Prince is still dead. Why can't someone fix it.

Right? Same thing has happened to me several times.

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link

I saw Hannibal Buress last week and he told a story about seeing "the late great Prince" and it hit me then. he was like "it was the best performance I've ever seen, but this was Prince, so you know some weird shit was gonna happen.....he did 7 encores."

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

so it's not just me then, fuck. i really can't even deal with it even now, so weird.

piscesx, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:43 (seven years ago) link

It's kind of like for awhile my mind was taking this as just another prince stage -- he changed his name then changed it back, stopped performing dirty stuff then reversed that, died... and that's permanent???? Are you sure? :(

I keep telling myself he just went to the store to get some OJ

Οὖτις, Thursday, 13 October 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, it still seems really odd to me, to think that Prince is no longer with us, but I think the same with Bowie. With Prince, though, there's still a little bit of a feeling of "wait, this wasn't the way it was supposed to be" ...

http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/7541106/prince-music-vault-shopped-purple-rain-deluxe-edition

Prince’s much-vaunted vault of unreleased music is being shopped for as much as $35 million by estate advisers Charles Koppelman and L. Londell McMillan, a source close to the situation tells Billboard. All three major labels are said to be in talks for rights to the music, the source said.

flappy bird, Friday, 14 October 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link

If anything, I just hope that all of that music ends up in the hands of someone that knows what to do with it all. If there must be posthumous releases, I hope they don't end up being cheap, tacky, shoddily put together etc. and for fucks sake, don't fucking radically remix or add overdubs like some idiot did once to the posthumous Hendrix stuff.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Friday, 14 October 2016 19:23 (seven years ago) link

I don't think that will happen. There's kind of a cabal of Prince guardians who all have their heads in straight. I feel like there'd be MORE chance of that kind of 'aesthetic mismanagement' if he had left a will and some weird relative was in sole control of the estate.

Susan Rogers should crowdfund a bid. I'd contribute.

MatthewK, Friday, 14 October 2016 20:50 (seven years ago) link

along with Questlove and Alan Leeds

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2016 20:51 (seven years ago) link

it seems pretty likely that Rogers, Wendy, Lisa, and Shiela are gonna be involved

they dont have 35 mil

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 14 October 2016 21:11 (seven years ago) link

if you've followed this circus at all, you'd know that the people running his current estate are wildly fucked. none of the people you mentioned are involved.

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 14 October 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

isn't a bank in charge

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 October 2016 21:14 (seven years ago) link

idk, Quest might have 35 mil?

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

i have been following this circus, what I'm saying is that when the bank sells the license for the vault to whatever major label, i'm willing to bet the ppl i mentioned will be brought in to consult and oversee the prep of the material

Goddamn, Controversy ruling my house right now. Title track might have the greatest minimal funk riff of all time.

MatthewK, Saturday, 15 October 2016 02:56 (seven years ago) link

yup, and the chant near the end is my fave lyric

sleeve, Saturday, 15 October 2016 03:26 (seven years ago) link

My least favorite Prince 80s album but easily one of the best tracks he ever did

Note: least favorite doesn't mean I don't like it a lot

Man, I wish he could have made Purple Rain a double album so he could have got the full version of 'Computer Blue' on there.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Sunday, 16 October 2016 13:18 (seven years ago) link

Least favorite is the Batman soundtrack, obvs. Not that it's not worth having.

idk, Quest might have 35 mil?

I'm sure he's not hurting but thirty-five million dollars is label-owner money, not musician money

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 16 October 2016 14:44 (seven years ago) link

'Controversy' (the title track) is one of the best things he ever did.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Sunday, 16 October 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

Why does nobody talk about Prince? Sure, it's not as "individual" as what came later, but it's leagues ahead of For You and the first two tracks on the LP (not to mention 'I Feel For You') are up there with some of his all-time best. It sounds fucking great, too.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Monday, 17 October 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

it does sound remarkably good compared to his later records. a lot more body to the lows and mids. the imperial phase records have that signature thin/airy sound

flappy bird, Monday, 17 October 2016 22:25 (seven years ago) link

'Bambi' fucking smokes too, even if Prince's voice on the chorus weirdly reminds me of Justin Hawkins from The Darkness.

im willing to bet that this total speculation with no basis in reality will not happen.

kurt schwitterz, Monday, 17 October 2016 23:15 (seven years ago) link

oh come on when has a major label ever messed up a dead artist's catalog
