Xasthur is sounding good so far.

I didn't realize Jute Gyte had any 'metal' albums this old, I thought Discontinuities was his first in that regard.

I think that's just the first with a 24tet guitar?

Notes:
The first track takes its title from György Ligeti's description of a childhood dream. As with Young Eagle I had difficulties with this middle album, which is stylistically all over the map: the opening track is one of the most diatonic, accessible things I've ever released; “Age, Seperation, and Cold” has probably the longest uninterrupted stretches of blasting I've ever written; the title track is a long ambient synth piece; “The Cry Essaying the Waters” has a big power chord riff that I may as well admit is a knockoff of Type O Negative's “Blood and Fire”; “The Irreality of the Past” is dodecaphonic.

Xasthur are fun (or not fun, I'm sure he'd hate to be considered 'fun') but you don't need more than two or three albums. Subliminal Genocide and Nocturnal Poisoning are enough for all but the most dedicated fan. Try those two, though.

I disliked their most recent one, Esoteric Warfare. The one before Ordo ad Chao, Chimera, was kind of "safe." Ordo, however, is endlessly fascinating. I remember reading someone who said listening to it feels like driving through Chernobyl and that seems accurate. (Ironically it is anything but driving music; it's "put on headphones and astrally project" music.)

It's very lo fi, but not in a noisy way. It has a weird smoothness to it, and probably works similar to something like Darkspace in that more attention pays more rewards.

edit: awesome string of albums there, three of my favs of the era

i discovered this album over the last 3 days and have listened to it obsessively, putting it high up my ballot. absolutely incredible music. slowly encircling, then spectacularly crushing. a showstopper.

yay I voted for that Esoteric. It's really good. So is that Mgla album but I gues it didn't make it onto my ballot.
