I wish Bill Magill was still around

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:16 (seven years ago) link

I voted for VALIS, but I still feel like I haven't wrapped my head around it fully (which may be the fun of it)

^ a very underrated album

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:20 (seven years ago) link

Is this Ghost album as infectiously nice as last year's poll-winner?

I'm not as fond of Infestissumam as the other two albums, but it's grown on me some now that it's been followed up by something stronger and it's not under the pressure of being the most recent album. Ghuleh/Zombie Queen and Monstrance Clock are highlights.

jmm, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:21 (seven years ago) link

Monstrance Clock is easily the best song Ghost ever made but the album isn't as good as the other 2 but its still a good album, just not great like the other 2.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:24 (seven years ago) link

It does lack the meatier sound of Meliora, but the songs are great.

Siegbran, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:25 (seven years ago) link

yeah the more pop production disappointed a lot of people

Monstrance Clock starts out like House Of Fun, which the closing track on Meliora does as well :D

oh I voted for this. it's a sad little horror album

imago, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:31 (seven years ago) link

You guys OK for me taking this down to 181 tonight?

293 Cleric - Regressions 75 2 0
270 maudlin of the Well - Bath 80 3 0
293 Cleric - Regressions 75 2 0
253 Deathspell Omega - Paracletus 88.625 3 0
237 Kayo Dot - Choirs of the Eye 95 3 1
226 Virus - The Black Flux 99 5 0
223 Gris - À l'âme enflammée, l'âme constellée... 100 4 0
221 Spectral Lore - III 103 3 0
214 Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters 107 4 0
213 Oranssi Pazuzu - Valionielu 108.40625 4 0
210 Krallice - Years Past Matter 110.625 3 0
209 Morbus Chron - Sweven 110.625 6 0

These are my favourites of the albums that have placed so far, a bit disappointed about some of them but there we are. But I got into that Morbus Chron album mostly cos of ILM hype at the time so that is a little bit surprising I suppose. I though Paracletus was more well-loved too.

Ugh, sorry late to the party and struggling to keep up, The Ark Work and Valis are good to see as they are both pretty niche.

Thy Catafalque are awesome and especially on this record.

Siegbran, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:56 (seven years ago) link

they are indeed and the new one is superb too (as is the one inbetween. Would you recommend the previous albums?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:57 (seven years ago) link

xpost I voted for Xasthur! I think it might have been a Thurston Moore mention that persuaded me to check them out

Neptune Bingo (Michael B), Sunday, 11 September 2016 22:58 (seven years ago) link

They're good too, but with Rengeteg they finally got that huge exciting sound.

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 11 September 2016 23:17 (seven years ago) link

I'd not heard Thy Catafalque til last night in the plug.dj thing, wrongfully assumed they were some kind of funeral doom. Really cool stuff. Another ILM poll success story!

Also, obligatory "Blus Aus Nord's Work Which Transforms God should be way higher" post. It was one of the best booster shots for black metal in the early 2000s.

I've never heard this one but, whoa, am I reading right that one piece is based on a 12-note series??

Xasthur is sounding good so far.

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Sunday, 11 September 2016 23:48 (seven years ago) link

I didn't realize Jute Gyte had any 'metal' albums this old, I thought Discontinuities was his first in that regard.

Tom Violence, Sunday, 11 September 2016 23:48 (seven years ago) link

I think that's just the first with a 24tet guitar?

Hi! I'm twice-coloured! (Sund4r), Sunday, 11 September 2016 23:49 (seven years ago) link

Notes:
The first track takes its title from György Ligeti's description of a childhood dream. As with Young Eagle I had difficulties with this middle album, which is stylistically all over the map: the opening track is one of the most diatonic, accessible things I've ever released; “Age, Seperation, and Cold” has probably the longest uninterrupted stretches of blasting I've ever written; the title track is a long ambient synth piece; “The Cry Essaying the Waters” has a big power chord riff that I may as well admit is a knockoff of Type O Negative's “Blood and Fire”; “The Irreality of the Past” is dodecaphonic.

"This is precisely the direction underground black metal in the States needs to take: textured, creative and intelligent without shunning the conventions that were originally conceived overseas by the genre forebears....It's time to start talking about this project with the same reverence once given to US underground mavens like Xasthur and Leviathan." - From the Dust Returned
