The thirst is real in that "review."

Austin, Tuesday, 6 September 2016 17:52 (seven years ago) link

Anyone else enamoured by the direction the album takes from "Heart Shaped Face" onwards? Settles into a nice groove with some top tier Olsen tracks ("Sister" and "Woman").

holy fuck if you have any interest in her music whatsoever you really don't want to miss this tour

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 19 September 2016 05:15 (seven years ago) link

Yeah she was great

Gukbe, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 02:20 (seven years ago) link

this album sounds good and the lyrics are good and it is good.

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 02:46 (seven years ago) link

i've heard amazing things about the tour as well.

the "review" austin quoted, while just a single paragraph, felt like enduring an illness. i feel like i've read so many pieces over the years that were basically that: haughty, dismissive, sexist, judging an album by some prefab criteria that the author has just made up but for some reason considers inviolable law.

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 02:49 (seven years ago) link

guess she has paul sukeena playing guitar in her band now (from spacin, steve gunn, solar motel band). that will add some firepower to the live show for sure.

tylerw, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 15:15 (seven years ago) link

it's like prime dylan and the band at this point. she is straight up killing it

reggie (qualmsley), Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

Quick listens haven't wowed me but will give her another chance. She's getting so much favorable attention

Wimmels, Wednesday, 21 September 2016 12:53 (seven years ago) link

i'm not even kidding. she is a rolling thunder revue force of nature. she might have the most powerful singing voice i've ever heard. don't miss this!

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 13:52 (seven years ago) link

i'm so excited to see her tonight!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 21 September 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

she might have the most powerful singing voice i've ever heard

on some songs her breathy vocals and melodies are too npr-tiny desk-Bob Boilen generic rock for me

curmudgeon, Thursday, 22 September 2016 14:16 (seven years ago) link

My Woman is super great; I liked it since I first heard it but every time I come back to it (which happens with increasing frequency) I like it more.

thos beads (jamescobo), Friday, 23 September 2016 23:27 (seven years ago) link

nine months pass...

Just figured out that her backup singer on this album/tour is Heather McEntire of Mount Moriah, who are really good in their own right.

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Friday, 23 June 2017 06:34 (six years ago) link

Maybe my expectations were too high but still reckon Burn Your Fire is way better than last record. Just seems more consistent overall - the last one was OK with a few great songs sprinkled through. It does sound more like a carefully considered breakout type record I suppose which i guess the evidence would suggest it was - increasing her profile and audience so thats great and all. Just like the other one better.

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Friday, 23 June 2017 12:03 (six years ago) link

Boo, My Woman is so obviously superior in every aspect.

Austin, Friday, 23 June 2017 17:50 (six years ago) link

BOO YOU

j., Friday, 23 June 2017 17:52 (six years ago) link

I prefer Burn as well, but My Woman has some songs that rival anything on Burn IMO "Sister", "My Woman" and "Heart Shaped Face"

Unchanging Window (Ross), Friday, 23 June 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

Burn hands down. My Woman has some crazy highs though.

my woman is a great record

marcos, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 16:51 (six years ago) link

"sister"! wow

marcos, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link

it certainly is, and sister is probably the highlight

saw her in concert at Roskilde Festival, crowd was somewhat noisy which annoyed her, but all the same she seemed very unfocused and unhappy to be there, perhaps intoxicated, not a good show

niels, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 17:15 (six years ago) link

I saw her a couple years back and she didn't seem happy to be there either. Mind you this was in Vancouver where crowds can be terrible for talking over performers. She made lots of dark sarcastic jokes. Unfortunately I fainted after "Stars" which was the highlight anyway

Paisley Window Pane (Ross), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:14 (six years ago) link

where is the love for the pine valley cosmonautic CHIVALROUS AMOEKONS, the mekons cover thing she did with will oldham and emmett kelly?

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

oh i want to hear that

marcos, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

She was great at Pitchfork this year - really enjoyed her and her band - ace playing and stage presence.

ACL taping live stream happening now - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqzc3lBfJHc

Don't know if they leave it up after the stream ends.

one month passes...

More of a technical question (asking for a friend) but does anyone know what set-up her band uses to get the bass tone on Burn Your Fire

Love that cover.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 12 October 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

I always sense of bunch of off-putting irony and cutesiness in her stuff, which others don't seem to hear

rip van wanko, Thursday, 12 October 2017 17:32 (six years ago) link

projection?
that's a really cool cover.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 12 October 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link

yea i really don't get much irony at all from her music, certainly not cutesiness

marcos, Friday, 13 October 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

it is the opposite for me, there is a sincerity to her lyrics and vocals that i really like

marcos, Friday, 13 October 2017 13:52 (six years ago) link

i listened to "heart-shaped face" and "sister" this morning, those lyrics about change in each of them i just love

"i've seen you changing / i've seen you aging"

"all my life i thought i'd change ... all my life i thought i'd change"

marcos, Friday, 13 October 2017 13:53 (six years ago) link

I read the MY WOMAN lyrics start to finish to see if I could find the irony I thought I heard, and there's not a bit. They read like a lost mid-80s Debbie Gibson record. That is until you get to Sister and it's like, whoa.

rip van wanko, Friday, 13 October 2017 14:06 (six years ago) link

there's a continuity to her lyrics thematically over the last two records, burn yr fire felt focused on lost love and all the regret involved, whereas the new one is reconciliation with that.

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 13 October 2017 15:05 (six years ago) link

This is haunting stuff:

i can't stop listening to my woman. i've been playing a lot of her older stuff too but it seems like such an immense artistic leap happened between the older records and this one

marcos, Tuesday, 17 October 2017 16:05 (six years ago) link

Her band is so good on those long tracks like "Special" and "Sister" - it doesn't seem like the kind of music that demands three electric guitars but there's space for each of them to do something and the way they build tension is fantastic.

Listening to those two back to back makes me appreciate the rougher edges of "Special" even more.
