Classic and/or acclaimed albums that are inexplicably out of print and not available to buy in digital format either

the XTC catalogue is out of print on CD. forget about vinyl. every record is on iTunes...EXCEPT SKYLARKING????????

I've never followed what the deal is there exactly - did XTC get all the rights to their masters from Geffen?

Back from Virgin mostly, I'd assume (but whether they've been bought back or licensed back or lapsed or whatever I've no clue).

Probably not classic, and not acclaimed at the time or now, but still one of my three favourite groups, The Yummy Fur. Entire catalog out of print, and has been for quite a while.

This Pitchfork Story of Feminist Punk in 33 Songs article reminds me that Kill Rock Stars to put out a complete Huggy Bear collection like they did with Kleenex/LiLiPUT ages ago.

I have all those Yummy Fur CDs - just looked on Discogs, had no idea some of them were going for $$! Great, fun stuff.

Yeah, it was during those couple of years when Franz Ferdinand were huge, the problem there was that Alex Kapranos only played on their final album (Sexy World) which is absolutely the worst thing they ever put out. The best-of compilation was a better idea - I believe the reason given for delays with this was that their labels Guided Missile / Vesuvius and/or the group have lost the masters. Then the buzz died away and now there seems to be absolutely zero interest from anyone who doesn't have the albums already. I just think it's a shocker that something like "The Career Saver" only exists as the b-side of a forgotten 7" single on a forgotten label from nearly 20 years ago, and has never even been on a compilation.

I think Kapranos only joined after the recording of Sexy World (always my favourite), so I'm not sure he's even on anything beyond 'This Is Andrew Sinclair'. Masters or not, they could have at least cloned the CDs and allowed some needledrops - presumably someone gave that idea the thumbs down

re Yummy Fur I thought it was just the vinyl that was going for $$$? I found Male Shadow on CD for £3 recently but the 10" was like £30 I think.

I thought A Guy Called Gerald's "Black Secret Technology" had fallen to this category, but looks like you can now get it digitally on his Bandcamp site. That's nice, it took me ages to find a physical copy of the 2012 remaster, the pressing for that must've been minuscule.

His previous album, "28 Gun Bad Boy", fits here though. At the moment, the cheapest used copy I could find online is 140 pounds, and it's not digitally available even on his Bandcamp site. Which is weird, because AFAIK, it was originally released by his own label, so he should have the rights to reissue it... Maybe he's just not proud of the album?

there's a live album, Slang (yay lol) and some "re-recorded" version of a couple hits

i listened to a few of those re-recorded def leppard tunes and eeeyowch.

wonder if with 28 Gun Bad Boy it's a sample clearing problem.

iirc, Def Leppard were/are in some kind of dispute with their old label and/or Mutt Lange. Terms for reissues couldn't be agreed on, so Def Leppard decided to re-record everything as faithfully as possible and only make those available digitally.

I've never heard 28 Gun Bad Boy, does it have some prominent uncleared samples?

Seems like some of Prince's post-Warner albums have been hit by this, The Gold Experience and Rainbow Children in particular go for crazy prices now. I was actually considering buying the latter (already have the former), but I'm not gonna pay 50 euros for it! Should've snatched it back in the day when you saw it in used CD bins for 5.

^^I was gonna bring that up back when this thread started. There's loads of OOP Prince stuff, both later Warners stuff and most of the albums he'd leased out afterwards.

What's the deal with Blackground? I looked at Wikipedia, but it didn't say anything about what sort of problems the label has had.

Not exactly albums, but the Beatles' fan club Christmas flexidiscs have been hard to come by since the early '70s when an LP compilation was briefly available. Also, the Let It Be film is out of print and was only ever issued on VHS.

Wish somebody redo the Clock Dva and Box material with that bunch of players.

XP IIRC Apple was preparing Let It Be for DVD release back in the early '00s (probably to tie in w/LIB Naked), but the release was quashed from on high because "No one wants to see a whole film of the Beatles yelling at each other."

There's probably a good list of suppressed films/videos that have that status for similar unflattering reasons (Cracked Actor; Cocksucker Blues; Eat The Document to name just three).

Also, the Let It Be film is out of print and was only ever issued on VHS.

To elucidate on that the Box were teh line up of Clock Dva that recorded the Thirst lp and several other bits and bobs from the time, obnce they'd split from frontman Adi newton.
I don't think that either band is currently well represented. Though I do think that I saw Clock Dva cds from that period of teh band's existence in the early days of Dublin Tower before they had the flood. Think that included some material that had originally been cassette only.

Apparently this has happened to the Voices from the Lake album, since the original label has folded. Quite sad, it's one of the best albums of this decade.

Ornette's Crisis: concert incl. Haden, Cherry, Redman, Denardo--one of D.'s earliest issued performances, if not the first, and its knockabout surety totally fits w overall: in space jungle settings, but no fantasy, converging on-point performances x some of their strongest, zeitgeist-charged material as of 1969 (incl. Haden's "Song For Che"). Effective room ambience, mostly just the right amount of shadowy echo, in whatever room at NYU.
Apparently *never* on CD or download, according to discogs, but the LP's been reissued several times, and whole thing's currently on YouTube (don't sleep)

This was reissued on CD by Real Gone Music a year or two back, paired with another extremely rare one, Ornette At 12.

Saccharine Trust Surviving You Always, their only SST record that isn't available to stream (at least the last time I checked) and not avail on cd or lp.

There is something weird and particularly personal about keeping that record of all the SST released unavailable, I mean you can still listen to Worldbroken (and you should cuz that record is something) but SYA is considered their classic and it has always seemed (watching from afar) that Ginn was trying to put the screws to them for some reason.
