voted Brazil, but if it came down to 'favorite word for duck in [x] language', I would go for the Croatian 'patka', no question

I like the synth swoop in Brazil, but I think Portugal wins it for me because it has the least "smooth" sounding vocals. Also LOL @ Pato. The Johnson family company tag line is pretty good, though not the best, which I would award to Germany because it sounds like a totally disjunctive fake computer voice juxtaposed with the "realness" of the singer.

could draw an interesting spectrum across the world of Total Toilet Protection between mainstream and more disruptive iterations

Portugal sounds a bit like a Culturcide version now

Idk about Culturcide, to me Culturcide's hallmark is vocals that are comically louder than the background music. It's more like Portugal sounds like Paul Weller and the others vary between Belle & Sebastian and Bobby Brown type smoothness

sarahell, Friday, 2 September 2016 22:07 (one year ago) Permalink

it had that kind of "taped over the backing track" vibe when i was listening last weekend

There Will Be Ducks (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 September 2016 22:08 (one year ago) Permalink

One could say that Portugal is the most "angular"

"the true punk and post-punk aficionado would vote for Portugal"

is Portugal top of the Acclaimed Music of 2016 ratings?

There Will Be Ducks (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 September 2016 22:10 (one year ago) Permalink

it does have a certain faux-naif charm, and then the tagline voice at the end sounds kind of exaggeratedly camp

There Will Be Ducks (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 September 2016 22:11 (one year ago) Permalink

I would write in the Portuguese Toilet Duck commercial for all Acclaimed Music polls.

How does my toilet get so clean?
It's easy: Duck's on my team.
Duck's curved neck can get under
the rim and fight germs right where they live,
while Duck's fresh discs fight all day long.
It's total toilet protection.
'bye, germs. 'bye, worries.

Still so fascinated by the Australian decision to re-record the whole tune and sing the closing line on a different beat etc.

I am sick and stressed and sleeping poorly and the little harmonica answering riff after "it's easy - Duck's on my team" is going to make me cry for its great beauty and tenderness

like the antipodean music guy for SCJ got the "package" and he goes home and listens to it in his car, at home at night on headphones, and his wife and kids are like, dad, what's the matter? and he gets in on Monday - we're all still at brunch up here - and he's like NO. IT'S BYE GERMS; BYE WORRIES. CARLA, GET ME REGGIE.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 12 February 2017 02:15 (nine months ago) Permalink

"Duck You Sucka!" is the full Australian version run thru Paulstretch with a few tweaks to the pitchbend and binaural beats settings

"Metalganser" uses a field recording of a Goosander and a shorter Paulstretch of the Australian advert with more extreme tweaking, mixed thru Audacity with a few extra effects mainly on the duck calls.

more to come until i get bored, i've been gathering the source tracks for as many of the different versions of the advert as i can find.

excitable Question Time guest (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 12 February 2017 10:02 (nine months ago) Permalink

Thanks to NV I've been debating doing a "Bee Movie but every time they say bee it speeds up" treatment on this advert. I'm quietly obsessed, though clearly not as obsessed as NV himself.
