https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feel_It_Break for a start. I dunno, I need to listen to FR again to figure out what makes it unique from the rest of the Scandi-electro-pop brigade but it's a well-established genre in itself with plenty of great stuff out there.

That Austra album is great but its mood is not nearly as claustrophobic or foreboding as what's happening on the Fever Ray album, particularly with respect to vocal treatment/pitch-shifting.

xp I'm probably not one to get into the debate because I only found Fever Ray so-so. I never felt as though I truly appreciated it as much as a lot of other people on here.

this was my first year on ilx! i remember making myself a mix of the top 40 tracks list and losing my mind over electrik red

from this list i'd probably vote it's blitz! or bill callahan (his best work). crack the skye is also great but way harder to listen to
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 September 2016 15:12 (seven years ago) link
It's Blitz! is good. I don't listen to it any more but it's fun. Is the Bill Callahan the one with 'Eid Ma Clack Shaw' on it? I like that song.

lol if the year were re-polled FOB would do many times better
I'm glad to remember that Future of the Left placed so high, still their peak.

Hard choice because I really loved Bitte Orca, but Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is just a perfect record and deserves respeck.

A good year imo.
I still think the previous Phoenix album was a lot better and the one here was disappointing.

I have enjoyed all of these at some point, and some of them - St Vincent, Wild Beasts, Grizzly Bear, Fever Ray, Fuck Buttons - I would even say I loved and still really, really like (Wild Beasts and Fever Ray are all-time classic for me). Fuck the haterz.

Previous Phoenix record was a horrific mess, in terms of mastering. As was the one that followed. Unlistenable. WAP is great pop fun for driving around in summer to.
It's great for 3 songs and then there's that buzzkill 10-minute long track 4 thing right in the middle of the album that goes nowhere.
― billstevejim, Thursday, 1 September 2016 15:32 (seven years ago) link
Actor is still a really good album.
I dunno, Fuck Buttons felt edgy, energetic, spiky and interesting at the time. Now it sounds like slowed down techno played strictly in the mid-range. 2009 felt like a big year in general for long crescending music that builds but ends up nowhere.

Ha, 2009 was a big postrock year for me as well. Worriedaboutsatan and Her Name is Calla. Land of Kush.

otm about Fuck Buttons, though I never really dug them... so much stuff from the late aughts is already so dated... remember EAR PWR and High Places?

I thought a lot of it was horrendous at the time, to be fair. It started to pick up again circa 2011 for me.

Yeesh these choices are not very attractive. Going on what's here I'd probably go with Wilco. But hoo boy, what a smelly list.

Voted for Actor. Easily my favourite St Vincent record. Two Dancers, It's Blitz, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Embryonic, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt II and Fever Ray all stand up too.
I still really rate the Royksopp album mentioned earlier. It's their only essential record.

Fuck Buttons sounded dated to me when it came out. It's just not very good.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow's "Ashes Grammar" was the big album for me at the time. Of the options here I guess it's Callahan or Bat for Lashes.

Best song: The Mountain Goats - "Ezekiel 7 and the Permanent Efficacy of Grace"Close second: Bat for Lashes - "Daniel"
