We're still making new threads for Orb albums correct?

Sample track seems quite lovely. As does the insinuation that this may...MAY be a sequel OF SORTS to Chill Out. Cool tracklisting too.

I'm excited for this release. Is the pre-order up yet?

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 18:11 (seven years ago) link

this is going to be the perfect soundtrack for the onset of autumn isn't it ?

well, i bloody hope so.

Moonbuilding was also on Kompakt and a total comeback album for the good doctor, one of my favorites from last year. If this one is of similar quality, color me excited as well!

octobeard, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 00:19 (seven years ago) link

ohh the sampler 5th Dimensions is lush and wonderful. can't wait!

octobeard, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 00:27 (seven years ago) link

Have we covered whether they're misspelling Okey Dokey on purpose like some Throbbing Gristle nonsense or do Brits have that wrong in the dictionary a la anodised aluminium

Anacostia Aerodrome (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 31 August 2016 01:22 (seven years ago) link

afaik we spell it okey dokey too but once you've corrupted all correct into okay and then formed the nonsense babytalk phrase okey dokey from that it's a bit weird to start getting fussy about "throbbing gristle nonsense"

I mean it's not like we're over here getting proprietary about the spelling of newsy wewsies

meh 😐 (wins), Wednesday, 31 August 2016 06:30 (seven years ago) link

huh just the other day ten years ago they were saying 'okie dokie' was a creative renewal

indeed - though I kinda feel that latter-period Orb depends mightily on Fehlmann, and if he's not involved than the results won't be very good. Moonbuilding felt like a pretty good bounceback after some lackluster collabs and soundtrack stuff. Really deep album too. Probably should check out the Alpine single they just put out.

frogbs, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 12:47 (seven years ago) link

Great points re: Fehlmann. In any case, whatever and whoever sparked this creative resurgence has my appreciation. This 90's downtempo revivalism is pretty awesome.

two months pass...

so this is excellent. Ambient in the the classical text book sense. subtly shifting tone float environmental submersion. will have to relisten to the fist chill out as well.

dsb, Saturday, 19 November 2016 00:23 (seven years ago) link

Keep coming back to this album--hoping it will be on a fair amount of others' year-end lists, since am pretty sure it will be somewhere on mine. (Think it helped that I had zero expectations...)

Rad Macca (Craig D.), Saturday, 19 November 2016 02:56 (seven years ago) link

the classical text book sense is what left me a little cold on this - I liked it but it felt inessential in its rigidly formalist design. I mean, it is what it is and no surprises, but as Boomkat Ambient becomes more and more of a thing this feels more like a retro exercise than anything else.

I've not really bothered with an Orb album in maybe 10 years but I love this.

Matt DC, Saturday, 19 November 2016 09:29 (seven years ago) link

Sorry by 10 I actually mean like 18 years.

Matt DC, Saturday, 19 November 2016 09:36 (seven years ago) link

Surprisingly enjoyed their remixes for Principe Del Norte, I should check this out.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 20 November 2016 12:26 (seven years ago) link

The album title is very 2016.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 20 November 2016 12:29 (seven years ago) link

The last one was fantastic! Definitely check out Moonbuilding

Going to see them on Saturday on the strength of this album. Never particularly cared for them previously, but wish they had more records in this style. The 'classic' stuff I've tried out seems pleasant enough but doesn't really hold my attention, though I've already played COW about 25 times

PaulTMA, Monday, 21 November 2016 11:41 (seven years ago) link

one month passes...

been listening to this all week, it's damn good. Forcing Fehlmann to make music without the metronomic kickdrum results in some pretty interesting moments.

frogbs, Tuesday, 27 December 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

agreed.

they are experiencing a definite late career uplift.

this and their last album on kompakt are really good.

mark e, Tuesday, 27 December 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link

in fact,

the only negative was having to rip off the tDR designed sticker to get into the cd.

i really wish that they had used the design on the actual cover.

mark e, Tuesday, 27 December 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

glad this thread was awakened -- I listened to the mix that came out and meant to get to the album, but you get distracted, you know...and wow, it's REALLY good!!

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 27 December 2016 22:14 (seven years ago) link

Don't overlook the Alpine EP from earlier this year. I'd rate that higher than Chill Out, World! actually, though prefer Moonbuilding to both.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 00:09 (seven years ago) link

It's good enough to make me wanna write about it, at least in conjunction with the KLF album.

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 16:35 (seven years ago) link

Enjoyed your blog post but it seems you pasted the final section twice. Now I'm off to play Chill Out and COW back to back.

lol I hope you did that on purpose

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

Ha. No I didn't, but it was meant to be.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 18:34 (seven years ago) link

COW is a 10/10

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 28 December 2016 19:34 (seven years ago) link

three years pass...

after a really stressful week of world based chaos (mk2 trying to get home from cambodia and all that jazz), the orb live album is really hitting the spot.
i think i need to rediscover the orb over the next few weeks/months.

mark e, Saturday, 21 March 2020 23:11 (four years ago) link

COW is a much better album than I remembered

Forcing Fehlmann to make music without the metronomic kickdrum results in some pretty interesting moments.

OTM. I think it gives his loops more room to play out, interact with each other, shape the evolution of the track.

lukas, Saturday, 21 March 2020 23:40 (four years ago) link

having heard fehlmanns lagos album, which is good but takes a while to get going, i tend to agree.

mark e, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:01 (four years ago) link

COW is a phenomenal album. Only listened to it out of curiosity via namechecking KLF's Chill Out. It does actually live up to that comparison, despite being a different kettle of fish

PaulTMA, Sunday, 22 March 2020 00:07 (four years ago) link

they have a new one today, Fehlmann isn't on it but apparently it's quite good

frogbs, Friday, 27 March 2020 14:57 (four years ago) link

i sorta totally forgot about the orb and am glad this thread strolled by

blather rinse repeat 2020 (Hunt3r), Friday, 27 March 2020 15:00 (four years ago) link

yeah this one is real nice, it's the album that "Towers of Dub" hinted at but was never made. "Afros, Afghans, and Angels" is one the best pure ambient tracks I've ever heard from them. lead single is totally misleading

major Katamari Damacy/Sega Dreamcast vibes on "Queen of Hearts"
