I feel like there might be some benefit to playing these things just to get myself used to actually singing in front of people, and for testing out my songs, working out bugs, etc
Open mics are fantastic for all of these reasons, plus you will meet other musicians, maybe even good ones! I spent a considerable amount of time trolling craigslist for a lead singer and after auditioning several people I ended up poaching a great vocalist/guitar player from an open mic.
Of course most folks that show up at these things are not very good, but that can be a tremendous confidence boost (this guy sucks but here he is on stage and no one is throwing rotten fruit at him, guess I have nothing to worry about)
