been singing the theme song around the house so much that my 5 year old has been asking my wife to sing "the tv" and now she's singing it too.

finally onboard with this. really impressed that after all this flourishing of indie moody animation that this show has found a new place to take it. feel like the jokes and silly animal touches are basically there to give some padding for the otherwise tremendously bleak outlook of the show. like also how thus far (mostway thru season 2) it feels like its mellowed from utter performative disaster into contemplative melancholy.

The whole list of oscarnominees on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/BoJackHorseman/comments/4ufdc9/spoilers_the_complete_list_of_oscar_nominees/

It's pretty amazing. Nominees for best song include: Play That Funky Yahtzee, Nazi and Spotlight Bling (Theme from Spotlight)

I finally finished watching out this season. Good lord did that get bleak. Finding out he didn't get the Oscar nomination was one of the bleakest things I've seen on TV in years. Walking Dead-level bleak.

Got excited when I saw this bumped as thought they'd announced another Christmas special

we just finished all three series inside about five days

um

why is this thread not 500 posts long

I really really enjoyed this after it hit its stride later on in S1

not sure what else I have to say at the moment but the underwater episode is one of the finest animated half hours of TV I've ever seen

sleeve, Friday, 24 March 2017 02:54 (seven years ago) link

People watch it for the world and for the characters, who continue to get deeper and deeper.

this gets at the appeal, I think. so many subtle references...

roughly speaking, rick and morty:bojack horseman::family guy:the simpsons

so hyped for the new series!

imago, Sunday, 20 August 2017 21:27 (six years ago) link

i haven't seen that much rick and mordy but it doesn't seem to be very similar to bojack other than being a cartoon with an alcoholic protagonist

p much

gbx, Monday, 21 August 2017 18:59 (six years ago) link

tbf same with family guy and the simpsons right?

flippy bard (Will M.), Monday, 21 August 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

Trailer out for the new season. Bojack missing could be a good plot mechanism, because more Mr Peanutbutter.

It's weird how between this and The Leftovers the two best shows on tv are explorations of depression and how it's ok to live that way. (Not counting Twin Peaks because it's transcended tv in many ways.)

Thomas Gabriel Fischer does not endorse (aldo), Friday, 25 August 2017 12:38 (six years ago) link

hmm, The Leftovers instantly added to interest pile

We've been rewatching all three seasons. It's completely amazing. I have no idea, as I said before, why this isn't a 500-post thread, because this show seems almost precision-tailored to ILX. Oh, and it also follows an exciting arc: each season is slightly better than the previous one. Can they keep that going?

imago, Friday, 25 August 2017 13:04 (six years ago) link

My Family Guy/Simpsons comparison to Rick & Morty was with the aim of showing up the latter in comparison to this tbh, but it's fine to like both I guess

imago, Friday, 25 August 2017 13:05 (six years ago) link

Yeah surprised that ILX not all over this. Judging by my circile of friends - a lot of people (me included) were turned off by the first half of teh first season and it's been a struggle to convince them to give the show a second chance. I admired S03 but felt S02 remained the emotional apex

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 25 August 2017 13:13 (six years ago) link

It's literally series 1 episode 7 (i.e. the exact start of the series' second half) where this goes from amusing to amazing

imago, Friday, 25 August 2017 13:19 (six years ago) link

Kind of off-topic, but new season of live action The Tick starts soon

Eallach mhór an duine leisg (dowd), Friday, 25 August 2017 13:27 (six years ago) link

I can only speak for myself, but after hearing a hundred good things about this show I watched the first few episodes and thought, huh, this is not amazing and in fact I didn't like it at all. So when months/years later I heard the show gets better I just thought, well, I bet it does!

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 August 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

I guess some people just don't deserve this show

imago, Friday, 25 August 2017 13:55 (six years ago) link

it's not like it wasn't a great show to start with though

first moment i've ever considered watching the leftovers

Yeah, I remember liking this from the start but then there's this moment where you're like, WHAT? THIS is what's happening? THIS is what I'm watching??

wow. how did i miss this completely? is it good?

flippy bard (Will M.), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:52 (six years ago) link

anyway, super pumped for new Bojack.

I don't really understand the Rick & Morty/Family Guy/Simpsons analogy. If anything it's more like this: Rick and Morty:Bojack::South Park:The Simpsons

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:53 (six years ago) link

xp i watched the pilot on Amazon, was pretty solid. a bit darker and less laugh out loud funny than the Warburton version but there were some solid superhero satire.

honestly as long as Edlund is involved, it'll be good

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:54 (six years ago) link

Bojack is absolutely brilliant
Never thought I'd be almost crying to a Nina Simone song on a snarky cartoon horse show

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

And also if you only just watched the first few episodes of season 1, you effectively haven't seen the show afaic, it's not like it just "gets better" like more adept, it goes in a completely different direction you can't really prepare for

Universal LULU Nation (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 25 August 2017 17:59 (six years ago) link

yeah at first the show is quite glib about bojack's alcoholism and loneliness but then it actually actively explores it in a more human and seriousway, and he reaches some real rock bottom nadir moments which i found genuinely affecting

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 August 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

it's a good show

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 25 August 2017 18:06 (six years ago) link

I like this show but some of it hits way too close to home that it just bums me out

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 25 August 2017 19:28 (six years ago) link

it's very strange that the show that best depicts the actual effects of depression on victims and people in their lives is a pun-heavy show about a man-horse/horse-man but then again we live in strange times

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Saturday, 26 August 2017 01:51 (six years ago) link

I think that's what makes it work tbh, most depressed people (ime) don't constantly feel depressed, it's all about feeling it when the descent hits. the animal puns are like those stretches of time when you fleetingly forget you're a fuckup

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 26 August 2017 01:56 (six years ago) link

that and i think that making it about goofy animals means it can get dark in a way that a live-action real people show would struggle with

gbx, Saturday, 26 August 2017 02:55 (six years ago) link

imago's trolling take on Rick & Morty bizarre and comically off the mark.

I'm gonna give Bojack another spin. First three or so episodes I watched were not exactly inspiring.

circa1916, Saturday, 26 August 2017 13:33 (six years ago) link

I feel like everyone would have done a Mr Peanutbutter #HOPE parody poster, but wow at the execution of this one.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:54 (six years ago) link

can i just start with 1.07 then?

also found the start of the first season kind of glib and unfunny

dug the underwater ep though

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:58 (six years ago) link

The trouble with skipping episodes is that you miss stuff that sets up later payoffs. Just drink it all down and trust me that it gets good

imago, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 13:18 (six years ago) link

I think you need to see 1.03. That sets up a lot of stuff. 5 and 6 are good as well. So, like, take it from 3?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 13:28 (six years ago) link

You could jump to 1.08 (the Herb Kazazz episode) if you want to check how good it gets, and then double back, perhaps?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 13:31 (six years ago) link

I reckon 7 is just as devastating as 8 in its own quieter way

imago, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 13:57 (six years ago) link

Imago's comparison is bad because rick n morty is much closer in quality to bojack (arguably better in some ways) than family guy or South Park for that matter are to the simpsons

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

fine fine fine, i'll watch more of it. as we've learnt you should never judge a series by the first few episodes, kids

imago, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 19:46 (six years ago) link

They should just stop making the first few episodes, then. Problem solved.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 19:51 (six years ago) link

Which modern multi-series shows were at top quality (by the show's standard) straight out of the gate I wonder

imago, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

maybe not modern but Ren and Stimpy was top quality pretty much out of the gate
