music that is more serious and primitive than usual

have to say, all of that sounds good to me, and the cover is definitely of the more old school Darkthrone variety than pretty much anything they've released this century

Also remembering the first time Fenriz referenced the new album was on his radio show, when he was playing Head of the Demon, saying Dthrone's stuff was going to be similarly "introverted". And that would be awesome!

Dominique, Monday, 8 August 2016 19:56 (seven years ago) link

also, here is what Amazon UK says is the tracklisting:

1. Tundra Leach - 05:02
2. Burial Bliss - 04:59
3. Boreal Fiends - 05:50
4. Inbred Vermin - 05:49
5. Arctic Thunder - 04:41
6. Throw Me Through the Marshes - 05:00
7. Deep Lake Tresspass - 04:48
8. The Wyoming Distance - 03:14

A Blaze In the Northern Sky

Has some weird kinship with the first At The Gates album, despite the different subgenre. Listen to them back to back and see what I mean--they capture a very similar surreal twisted beauty.

Listening to Arctic Thunder for the first time and enjoying it. It's their 17th album. Is their later stuff all good? I feel I've stuck to the 3 or 4 classics and maybe lost out...

Duke, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:29 (seven years ago) link

even the ones that didn't seem good to me at some point seem good to me now tbh

Darkthrone are a band that, if you love metal of all stripes, will always deliver. They ape their influences proudly and usually execute well. The only duds in their discography might be the early aughts albums, but if you bookend the middle period with Panzerfaust on one end and F.O.A.D. on the other you're good. I don't mean to disparage the albums from that era but the production is not on par with their best. Arctic Thunder is great, tho.

Yelploaf, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:55 (seven years ago) link

Thanks. So to clarify - Panzerfaust thru to FOAD are to be avoided?

Duke, Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:01 (seven years ago) link

Or Total Death thru to The Cult Is Alive?

Duke, Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:03 (seven years ago) link

Panzerfaust in the last great album of theirs from the 'classic' era imo. I didn't dig anything after that until FOAD. But again, such a great, dedicated band that I can't really say avoid anything.

Yelploaf, Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:10 (seven years ago) link

I listened to Plaguewielder recently and it was better than I remember.

Also, check out Goatloard. Maybe online before you buy it, but to certain weirdos (like me) it's a great, strange record.

that's the thing. last time I listened to FOAD it was way better than it seemed when it was new. they're a smart and good band, and even their ebbs are worth some listens.

the commentary fenriz does for peaceville's reissue of transilvanian hunger is pretty awesome and hilarious. he talks at one point about how important track order is to him and says "that's an important job of being a musician as well! although i don't call myself a musician, that's disgusting." then he takes a beer break

love that man

i watched his "Black Metal 101" lecture last night and spent the night listening to Bathory, Tormentor and Darkthrone.

As long as it's better than their last six or seven albums, which are a complete blur to me, I look forward to it as well.

pomenitul, Friday, 22 March 2019 10:42 (five years ago) link

I donโ€™t think that at this point we can expect much more from Darkthrone than fun filled 80โ€™s pastiche.

Siegbran, Friday, 22 March 2019 18:12 (five years ago) link

Darkthrone are firmly in Ramones territory for me now tbh. I know they'll never be as good as they were but I'm also not likely to be mad at anything they put out.

agree... love the bass sound and general production and strong material

I think Panzerfaust/TD/Ravishing are a great trilogy, actually.

There's a riff in Where Cold Winds Blow that sounds like two guitars imitating a chainsaw gone bezerk and i keep replaying that part. A Blaze In The Northern Sky has a LOT to offer

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 June 2021 05:56 (two years ago) link

it sounds like shit and the riffs are just so goddamn great and they drape over the drums like rotted robes

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 June 2021 06:11 (two years ago) link

it's pretty fucking good... hoping Old Star and Eternal Hails are the first two of yet another trilogy

Shaidar Logoff (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 26 June 2021 12:00 (two years ago) link

I thought Old Star was alright, mostly thanks to the proverbially epic 'Hardship of the Scots', but Eternal Hails is yet another post-Panzerfaust release that leaves me cold, and not in the trve kvlt sense. That said, I'm that rare beast: a black metal enthusiast who merely likes rather than worships Darkthrone.

pomenitul, Saturday, 26 June 2021 12:18 (two years ago) link

I enjoy this, but at the same time it kinda feels like they're going through the motions?

braised cod, Saturday, 26 June 2021 12:22 (two years ago) link

idk if that's true of the last two tracks

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 June 2021 13:45 (two years ago) link

lol yeah I wrote that before I got that far.

braised cod, Saturday, 26 June 2021 13:52 (two years ago) link

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Saturday, 26 June 2021 15:55 (two years ago) link

if it doesn't sound like crap it isn't a Darkthrone record.

braised cod, Saturday, 26 June 2021 15:59 (two years ago) link

do you have to be cool with nazism to be a true metalhead

Left, Saturday, 26 June 2021 16:23 (two years ago) link

obviously the answer to your good faith question is yes

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 June 2021 16:36 (two years ago) link

hard to think of many other genres where this shit is just normal

Left, Saturday, 26 June 2021 16:38 (two years ago) link

itโ€™s something i grapple with way more as a mayhem fan than as a darkthrone fan but go off

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 June 2021 16:39 (two years ago) link

i do lament the normalization of buying records by nazis in metal communities

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 June 2021 16:40 (two years ago) link

wtf? Darkthrone has literally made a statement that they are are not Nazis, so why wouldn't you go after actually dodgy bands? But I guess that would undermine your argument, since most metalheads avoid those.

braised cod, Saturday, 26 June 2021 17:35 (two years ago) link

fuck off

Left, Saturday, 26 June 2021 17:37 (two years ago) link

ahh this is a productive discussion

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Saturday, 26 June 2021 17:38 (two years ago) link

they collaborated with varg & have an album called panzerfaust but hey at least they said they're not nazis

this kind of denial & defensiveness is absolutely typical though
