i went from early level 15 to late level 17 last time. got another three coming up in... 4km? which will take anywhere between a day and a week depending on whether or not i feel like walking around with this damn game open

damn, will
― goole, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link
also, this shit is absolute next level -- uses niantic API to tell you EXACTLY where pokemon are in your vicinity, and for how long. all of the other map sites are a joke

right now I am viewing Will as a cautionary tale and leaning towards deleting this from my phone
... once I turn this Eevee into something cool

haha here's the thing. i maybe look at this game 15 minutes a day? (i've never done the 50 pidgeys thing, but i did do a week's worth of evolutions at once simply bc i was saving them for one concentrated blast)
maybe when it came out more like an hour a day. cut into my mpq time. but mpq is 4ever
― a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:23 (seven years ago) link
this game is way way healthier than the horrible mess of mpq, and not just because it involves walking
how the hell do you keep finding 10km eggs anyway? i think they're set to spawn like 4.5% of the time? do you just walk a lot and run through eggs?
― qualx, Thursday, 28 July 2016 00:28 (seven years ago) link
i've been walking 20–30 km per day because of this game, so basically yeah
― Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 July 2016 00:38 (seven years ago) link
i found pokemon yellow (which i forgot i even had) and pokemon silver in a shoebox (i had pokemon blue first but maybe i traded it). i had taped over the pokemon logo because i was so embarrassed to be seen playing it in public. and here i am in my 40s just doing it outside on my phone.
― Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 July 2016 06:29 (seven years ago) link
oh and pokemon snap.

― Sean, let me be clear (silby), Thursday, 28 July 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link
wait, whaaaaat? you've been walking 20k a day BECAUSE of this game? how many ks did you walk before???
― a simba man (Will M.), Thursday, 28 July 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link
the "wait until the last hour and spam the gyms for gold" game-theory thing works, fyi

I do most of my egg hatching on the bus. It goes slow enough at times that it cranks up the KM's pretty quickly.

xp. I go excruciatingly slowly on a bus up a mountain as part of my commute and that gets me a km or two.

immediately before this game came out i was walking ~2,000 steps (~1.5 km) per day. in the seven days to this past sunday i walked avg 34,000 steps (27 km) per day, according to my fitbit (iphone stats are similar).
it's not because i'm obsessed with zubats though. i've been out of work for a while and hadn't been doing much physically, so pokemon go became my incentive/excuse to get out and walk. my mood has transformed because of this game.
― Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link
i've gone out on a couple runs with this active on my phone. (it burns another 15-20% battery life in about 45 mins of activity.) but weirdly the distance logged in the 'incubator' is a lot less than the running app. i did some sprint interval stuff, i wonder if i was going faster at times than the 'speed limit' for walking? kinda cool if so
― goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 16:21 (seven years ago) link
there is a speed limit, but honestly if you don't have the app open and active on your screen, it just doesn't register movement :/
the speed limit is p high too, you probably won't outrun it. you can outbike it tho
― a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link
i thought that 'battery saver' mode meant that screen goes mostly dark (with a dim ghostly logo) while still registering movment. bummer if not so.
― goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link
plus the distance logged was like 2/3rds of the running app. weird. could be just janky.
― goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 17:21 (seven years ago) link
it's still registering movement in that mode, but if the app is closed (or possibly even while your phone screen is entirely off) it's not tracking. it's a total bummer and i hope they patch it in. although i think that's supposedly the goal of the "go plus" dongle, which is supposedly always tracking.
xp yeah there's also the fact that it is just straight up janky sometimes. i'll walk what is definitely like a km with the app open and afterwards i've walked... 0.
― a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link
afaik it uses the GPD to track your speed & distance, so if it doesn't ping the gps fast enough it approximates your speed as super fast

lol @ them just deleting the parts of the game that didn't work.
― Jeff, Sunday, 31 July 2016 10:20 (seven years ago) link
there's not really much to do now. levelling up makes the whole game harder, and 90% of the time it's just rats and bats. even taking gyms is a transient thrill.

weird - my latest update says "don't go to dangerous places to catch pokemon"
― Mordy, Sunday, 31 July 2016 13:01 (seven years ago) link
which parts of the game did they delete?
the major one is where you could once tell how far away some pokemon were (and therefore could track them down), but now it's just a panel that tells you 9 pokemon are in the universe.
people seem to be rage quitting en masse (or at least threatening to) because of the removed features/uneven game play, but really it's easier to just play it until it's no longer fun. revolutionary i know. at some point i'll get sick of paper toss gps edition and do something else, weh.
― Autumn Almanac, Sunday, 31 July 2016 13:47 (seven years ago) link
Also removed battery saver mode on iOS.
― Jeff, Sunday, 31 July 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link
Because there was a bug with it.
gyms are so dumb. the gym at work gets tossed around so much there's no point in putting anything in there after you've collected for the day, unless you like gather 10 others on your team who hopefully have really strong tanks and then stake it out after everyone else left, and even then you still won't last another 21 hours with it. what's the point? I keep taking it down from other teams for exp and leaving it grey
― qualx, Sunday, 31 July 2016 17:21 (seven years ago) link
this new update has really killed it. everything bursts out of balls and runs away now, even weedles ffs, so there's no incentive to keep trying. it's starting to feel like niantic has no idea what it's doing.
― Autumn Almanac, Monday, 1 August 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link
and they killed pokevision which tbh was one of the few reasons i kept playing, because i could actually track shit. now not even

i think this might have to do with level cuz this started happening to me once i hit 13 or 14
― bitcoin bajas (diamonddave85), Monday, 1 August 2016 14:48 (seven years ago) link
i feel like pokevision removes the entire point of the game, which is to wander around not knowing when you might encounter an unusual pokemon, so kudos to niantic
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 1 August 2016 14:58 (seven years ago) link
me too, but since the update it's gotten ridiculous. overnight lvl 25 went from catching maybe half, to 90% bursting several balls and fleeing. there's no challenge, no nothing, just throwing dozens of balls for no reason.

i can't find any indication that that's the case in either of this weekend's releases (i don't know when a.m. falls where you are but assuming america). i can't test it either because from where i am no pokemon have spawned within range in the past few hours. normally i'd go out and test it but it's not appealing enough in its current state.
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 02:35 (seven years ago) link
most people over level 20 reported a 90% fail rate anyway, which is just an excellent design choice if your goal is punishing humanity
the update turned every pokemon into an evil little shit constantly jumping and taunting and being random unknowable distances away
― qualx, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link
and breaking out of balls and running wayyyy more often
― Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 02:45 (seven years ago) link
so being level 20+ makes cp10 pokemon harder to catch, but this new update makes those same pokemon even harder to catch
