A guy in his 80s asked me about Pokemon go today. I tried my best.

cbf with gyms any more, no point in its current state

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 04:32 (seven years ago) link

since i hit level 25 roughly every second pokemon runs away. the balance in this game is terrible. i should not have to burn off a load of ultra balls on a 10 cp pidgey that fucks off regardless.

fuckin' Pidgey

Pidgys are great. Cheap evolutions.

collect 60 pidgeys, crack a lucky egg, evolve all of the pidgeys, rake in xp

xp yes

all pidgeys: one day i will be my ultimate form the majestic pidgeot

ive evolved many pidgeys into pidgeots thinking that the cp multiplication would make a p bad ass pidgeots, never happens.

I realized yesterday that every time I went to the bathroom all day I clicked on a pokestop.

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 16:49 (seven years ago) link

for unfun min-max purposes I avoid catching 2nd or 3rd level evolutions I haven't caught yet so I can evolve them under a lucky egg. I had a super successful egg period despite only getting through 40 evolves because my phone is so slow and crashed 3 times. about 12 of the evolves were new pokedex additions so double double exp.

qualx, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 17:28 (seven years ago) link

is there a pt to having more than 1 of the same kind of thing? ie yes what do i do with all these fucking pidgeys

goole, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 19:56 (seven years ago) link

if you transfer them you get a candy so I just transfer all except the highest cp, unless the highest cp is pretty low, in which case i transfer them all and trust that i will later catch a higher cp one that'll be worth evolving

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 20:05 (seven years ago) link

although I occasionally evolve crappy pokemon just for the xp of evolving, especially if they are evolving into a pokemon not yet in my pokedex

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link

all those pidgeys are good for evolving once (12 candy cost) for 500 xp each. they are the grist for the mill that is your xp level because pokemon is immediately under the surface always mortifying

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 20:22 (seven years ago) link

the internet recommends waiting until you have ~600 pidgey candies, ~50 pidgeys, and a lucky egg... then pop the egg, and evolve all of the pidgeys, get 50,000 xp

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 20:23 (seven years ago) link

oh shit, I am doing that

ælərdaɪs (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 20:28 (seven years ago) link

if you're feeling really plucky do what i did, and set up 3x 10.0km eggs to all hatch at the same time... right before they hatch, pop your double xp, get the double hatch xp (1000x2 per egg) and THEN grind your pidgeys into paste

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:03 (seven years ago) link

woah

i went from early level 15 to late level 17 last time. got another three coming up in... 4km? which will take anywhere between a day and a week depending on whether or not i feel like walking around with this damn game open

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

damn, will

goole, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:13 (seven years ago) link

also, this shit is absolute next level -- uses niantic API to tell you EXACTLY where pokemon are in your vicinity, and for how long. all of the other map sites are a joke

... once I turn this Eevee into something cool

http://porno (DJP), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

haha here's the thing. i maybe look at this game 15 minutes a day? (i've never done the 50 pidgeys thing, but i did do a week's worth of evolutions at once simply bc i was saving them for one concentrated blast)

maybe when it came out more like an hour a day. cut into my mpq time. but mpq is 4ever

a simba man (Will M.), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 21:23 (seven years ago) link

this game is way way healthier than the horrible mess of mpq, and not just because it involves walking

how the hell do you keep finding 10km eggs anyway? i think they're set to spawn like 4.5% of the time? do you just walk a lot and run through eggs?

qualx, Thursday, 28 July 2016 00:28 (seven years ago) link

i've been walking 20–30 km per day because of this game, so basically yeah

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 July 2016 00:38 (seven years ago) link

i found pokemon yellow (which i forgot i even had) and pokemon silver in a shoebox (i had pokemon blue first but maybe i traded it). i had taped over the pokemon logo because i was so embarrassed to be seen playing it in public. and here i am in my 40s just doing it outside on my phone.

the "wait until the last hour and spam the gyms for gold" game-theory thing works, fyi

I do most of my egg hatching on the bus. It goes slow enough at times that it cranks up the KM's pretty quickly.

xp. I go excruciatingly slowly on a bus up a mountain as part of my commute and that gets me a km or two.

immediately before this game came out i was walking ~2,000 steps (~1.5 km) per day. in the seven days to this past sunday i walked avg 34,000 steps (27 km) per day, according to my fitbit (iphone stats are similar).

it's not because i'm obsessed with zubats though. i've been out of work for a while and hadn't been doing much physically, so pokemon go became my incentive/excuse to get out and walk. my mood has transformed because of this game.

Autumn Almanac, Thursday, 28 July 2016 22:53 (seven years ago) link

i've gone out on a couple runs with this active on my phone. (it burns another 15-20% battery life in about 45 mins of activity.) but weirdly the distance logged in the 'incubator' is a lot less than the running app. i did some sprint interval stuff, i wonder if i was going faster at times than the 'speed limit' for walking? kinda cool if so

goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 16:21 (seven years ago) link

there is a speed limit, but honestly if you don't have the app open and active on your screen, it just doesn't register movement :/

the speed limit is p high too, you probably won't outrun it. you can outbike it tho

a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link

i thought that 'battery saver' mode meant that screen goes mostly dark (with a dim ghostly logo) while still registering movment. bummer if not so.

goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

plus the distance logged was like 2/3rds of the running app. weird. could be just janky.

goole, Friday, 29 July 2016 17:21 (seven years ago) link

it's still registering movement in that mode, but if the app is closed (or possibly even while your phone screen is entirely off) it's not tracking. it's a total bummer and i hope they patch it in. although i think that's supposedly the goal of the "go plus" dongle, which is supposedly always tracking.

xp yeah there's also the fact that it is just straight up janky sometimes. i'll walk what is definitely like a km with the app open and afterwards i've walked... 0.

a simba man (Will M.), Friday, 29 July 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

afaik it uses the GPD to track your speed & distance, so if it doesn't ping the gps fast enough it approximates your speed as super fast
