This means next to nothing to me and yet I'm excited!

Vicarious gaming, takes less time but just as satisfying...

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay i am thinking of trying this out. I generally like teh rpg of any sort but the only mmorpg i've tried is ultima online very early on in it's life and i didn't like it much.

I didn't like the fact that practically nothing was going on at all in the world and there was a huge focus on clans/alliances and doing things as part of a party. I hated the whole partying up thing mostly because i didn't like the ppl very much.

Twist my arm or tell me to try city of heroes instead, or ignore me at yr leisure.

jeffrey (johnson), Thursday, 24 November 2005 04:44 (eighteen years ago) link

MY guild and I have been playing the 1.9 test server rather vigorously, and i can safely say this will be the patch to crush all patches.

Will M. (Will M.), Friday, 25 November 2005 04:30 (eighteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
jeffrey:

There's still a pretty strong group component, particularly once you get to higher levels; the good thing is that while it helps to be part of a guild/clan, you don't have to be. I can't compare this game to any others because it's the only MMORPG I've played but I love it.

Toon update:

Teufelstod (dwarven warrior) is on the cusp of hitting 54, meaning that the 40 gold I dumped on an armor set will soon be money well spent.

Grinz (human priest) is at 27 right now. I need to do some Stockades runs with him and just find more groups in general.

Deezil (night elf druid) is at 16 right now; when I get around to it I will get his water form.

Lunnil (gnome warlock) is at 15. He's sitting in Westfall right now waiting to pwn some goretusks.

Tolenar (human paladin) is at level 4. I started him just to get a feel for the class before the patch.

Engelfeuer (dwarven hunter) is at 6. I had a hunter on another server and that class was fun, so this is my other spare time wait-for-rested-bonus toon.

Dan (And So On) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 December 2005 18:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I am going to get this up and running for christmas i think, then i'll have a huge chunk of time to just sit and play it.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 12 December 2005 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Dan, I hope you're preparing for the hemmorhoids your WOWing will no doubt create.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahahaha dude, I'm not using my ass to play this game!

Dan (Challenge!) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 December 2005 21:47 (eighteen years ago) link

good thing is that while it helps to be part of a guild/clan, you don't have to be

I get the impression that when you get to the larger dungeons with 20-40 people, your chances with a pick-up group go sharply downhill.

Given that you're not that bothered about regularly grouping with the same people, why all Alliance?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:28 (eighteen years ago) link

As soon as I hit submit, I realised that the answer is probably "so I can send stuff from the big guys to the little guys"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 01:29 (eighteen years ago) link

God, this game sounds good. Is it really as unfeasibly complex as it sounds?

melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 02:00 (eighteen years ago) link

It's more accessible and streamlined than any other MMORPG that came before it. It has a lot of depth without being particularly complex, and the many intricacies of every level of gameplay will generally reveal themselves to you in ways that aren't overwhelming.

As soon as I hit submit, I realised that the answer is probably "so I can send stuff from the big guys to the little guys"

Hahaha yep! Also you can't do a Horde/Alliance mix on a PvP server.

Dan (And So On) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 13 December 2005 12:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I bought it. It's spent the past hour installing, i have already read the manual and am totally ready to lvl up. I wish it wld hurry up.

From the Wow page on naming conventions:
http://www.wow-europe.com/en/policy/namingp2.html#f

Contain "Leet" or "Dudespeak"
This category includes names which:

* Consist of language existent only in online communication (i.e. Roflcopter, xxnewbxx, Roxxoryou

If a player is found to have such a name for their character, guild, or pet, he/she may:

* Be assigned a randomly generated temporary name, to be changed via the online ticket system
* Be given a warning
* Be temporarily or permanently suspended from the game ).

OMG. Roflcopter.

elf titties!

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:07 (eighteen years ago) link

They're all like that. There's a fair list of things you can choose when selecting your character, but body type, apart obviously from species and sex, isn't one. More obvious on the ladeez: an imposing piece of armor on the men is often a metal push-up bra on the women.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, i know. I think character design like that is pretty standard, especially in american/anglo fantasy/mmorpgs.

i just thought it was funny that a nice shot of elf titties was the first image used for the article.

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I now have a level 17 gnome warlock and a level 11 night elf druid. Life is great.

jeffrey (johnson), Friday, 30 December 2005 23:12 (eighteen years ago) link

YAY JEFFREY! I didn't get to play for a week so I am about to go on a BENDER.

Dan (Or At Least Check My Auctions) Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 31 December 2005 21:31 (eighteen years ago) link

some friends of mine just got into this, which made me consider coming back. but my enthusiasm diminished again when i remembered how much i hate all the quests that want you to collect 90 tails of ratgays from the dickswamp of spermsorrows, especially when those rats only drop like 1 gaytail after killing 40 of them, which is even MORE impossible and stupid and boring and gay when trying to do it in a party and everyone else wants the gaytail or whatever pointless fetch quest item is inserted.

Dan (Oh Happy Day) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 18:15 (eighteen years ago) link

PLAY UPDATE: I've levelled my priest Grinz to 29. Priests seem to oscillate wildly between being really, really fun and really, really boring. I've also got my hunter up to 13 (wolf pet) and am remembering exactly how much I love the hunter class. My warrior is stalled out at 54; I just don't feel like playing him right now (ditto my warlock and paladin).

Dan (Wait'll I Get Mind Control!) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 18:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I deleted my hunter today. I still really love the class (and the changes made in 1.7 meant that me+my pet was always in the top 2 damage dealers in any raid), but I'd finished every quest in the game apart from the ones in the later instances. My guild's good, and I enjoy playing with them, but all that's left is PVP grinding, raid instance grinding, or rep grinding. Also I need to get a job :)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 23:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay, I hit 30.

MIND CONTROL IS AWESOME OMGWTF.

Dan (YAY) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 06:03 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm downloading the last coupla patches as we speak. mostly bcz i was just informed by my friends that they play with this goth chick who talks about ass rape all the time

http://myspace-786.vo.llnwd.net/00006/68/73/6073786_l.jpg

i am so ready to try and creep this broad out.

The Legend of Tony Balls (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 10:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah don't. She might let you see more elf titties if you're nice. Dan, keep up the updates, as I said before I enjoy the viacarious thrill. Bit pathetic really.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 14:30 (eighteen years ago) link

how do you creep out somebody who goes on about ass rape all the time, tho? post articles from the heritage foundation or focus on the family?

kingfish russian bigamist (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

My priest is 31! Levelling is absurdly easy if you have a decent rested bonus.

Dan (Woot) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I heard a REALLY scary story about some tasteless real-life WoW shenanigans that I'm not gonna repeat here because I'm a tease.

Dan (Fucker, You Best Start Tellin'!) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:59 (eighteen years ago) link

post 'em, dammit. we haven't had nearly enough tastelessness on this board.

That is probably gonna be my next desktop image.

In other news, I finally hit 55 with my warrior this morning before going to work.

Dan (AV Here I Come) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 19 January 2006 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a roleplaying game without the roleplaying. therefore it's just a computer game that you play with other people. therefore i don't want it as a roleplaying game.

the kit! (g-kit), Thursday, 19 January 2006 13:37 (eighteen years ago) link

One of my coworkers practically does nothing but play the AH. He currently has something like 8000 gold at his disposal (not counting however much gold he currently has in active speculation).

Dan (Fucker) Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 21 January 2006 18:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay, I have just discovered The Joy Of Farming (ie, taking your lvl 55 character into the Deadmines over and over and over again, alternating between selling off swag at the AH and shipping 'mats off to the enchanter toon). If it wasn't so hard to get to (and it wasn't camped all to be damned) I'd be farming the Scarlet Monestary, too.

Dan (10 Gold In 30 Minutes) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 January 2006 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

i have not made 10 gold in 3 days and 11 hours.

jeffrey (johnson), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

HINT: If you are not a high level farming a lowbie instance, pick mining/skinning as your professions. Every animal you kill = $$$, plus every node you mine and smelt = $$$, PLUS (this is important) every abandoned, looted animal corpse you find = $$$$$.

You can switch to a crafting profession later on once you've actually got the cash to support it.

Dan (Bare Minimum, Take Skinning For $$$) Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 January 2006 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I love this game, i took skinning for $$$.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

ANOTHER HINT: Go to http://www.wowguru.com and download the following:

- Titan Panel
- CTMod

BAM! Your in-game experience is now a whole lot more fun.
