What bands did you LOVE but now HATE?

The Pixies, they are just annoying to me now.

Used to quite like the Pixies. Now I can't stand them. Loud-quiet-UFO-bullshit.

actually i don't really hate many bands i have loved. i'm pretty loyal. the old records are still there for me if their current incarnation sucks.

Beastie Boys. I can't say as I HATE them, but I sure won't be playing any of their records anytime ever.

I would never have been able to go from something as strong as love to something as strong as hate. There are certainly bands that I like less now than I once did (Blur, Radiohead - both because they have changed musical style in ways they shouldn't have), but from love to hate, that is impossible.

And, I mean, I still love "Parklife", "The Great Escape", "The Bends" and "OK Computer".

Hate is too strong a word but a band I once loved more than any other was Yo La Tengo. And I ask myself what happened to them about 15 years ago? They became so bad and are still getting worse. Their music turned sour. What will their next album be? A drone of a fart?

Boy you've really got an ax to grind against them, huh? That's, what, three threads you've dug up now to express your disdain?

I get why someone might not dig these new experimental songs, but they've "become so bad and are still getting worse" is one of the more baffling Yo La Tengo takes I've read. There's a Riot Going On is a great record.

Ha, I actually didn’t start liking them until I turned 30 or so.

For me it would probably be Smashing Pumpkins. Same case as alex in manhattan, I still like Gish a lot but it’s been almost a decade or more since I listened to their other albums.

you are right, "there's a riot going on" was not too bad with some pretty good songs like "shades of blue" or "for you too". but two out of 15 is not enough for a ylt record.

Flaming Lips.

The Soft Bulletin was my favourite album ever for almost a full year when I was 16. May the deities-that-be ensure that I'll never hear it again.

Flaming Lips live were a treat though. Their over the top shows always made me smile. The music was indeed quite short-lived.

Was a fan since New Wave Hotdogs came out but i haven't listened to a note of YLT since Summer Sun came out

I'm not sure I could bear to revisit Neutral Milk Hotel either, but I haven't tried.

And while I don't hate them by any stretch of the imagination, I've definitely cooled off on Grizzly Bear.

I'm sort of indifferent to Animal Collective now.

Blur. Can't stand anything pre self-titled or post "13," and 70% of those two albums also rub me the wrong way. It's definitely an Albarn thing.

same for me, as a teenager I could not get past how bad some of the lyrics are, now that I'm an adult I really don't care much about lyrics unless you're a band like Sparks that's particularly good at writing them

Sort of an orthogonal example, but one I think is sort of interesting--I've always loved Aesop Rock, but I can't stand to listen to his old (pre-2007 or so) material anymore. It's like listening a different, much weaker artist entirely, IMO. His delivery, flow & writing improved drastically since then. Call it a reverse Yo La Tengo, I guess (I have no strong opinions about YLT one way or the other).

Ooh, yeah, Bjork, I can't really listen to her anymore, either. I don't know if I hate it, I just don't want to hear it.

i was a mild fan prior but couldn't bear to listen to the flaming lips after seeing them live. wayne... yikes

Modest Mouse were sort of like that for me

their stuff up to M&A still sounds okay but I never really wanna listen to it. and the show wasn't all that bad, this was after Brock got sober so it wasn't a disaster. I was just like..."already, that's enough Mouse for one lifetime" and outside of a single listen to their new album I've stuck to it
